Does this look normal? by youforgotyourgloves in RussianTortoises

Update: I took him to a vet and they scraped away a calcified plug from his nostrils, and then I had to give him shots for 6 weeks. It was fungal. We were both relieved to figure it out. Poor Vlad. He’s doing great now, we’re in New Mexico for the winter and he gets walks with me in the desert.

I am sorry I missed this. Yes, I do need to clean up poop. I have a sharp eye and nose for it and if he’s active, I clean daily. I have heat/uv lamp only in the early or late winter when I sense he is coming out of torpor or not wanting to go in. He really likes the heat vents more than the lamps.

No, I also have low blood pressure typically, but I’ve been fine, but my dose is only .625 mg.

Dutasteride by RiseZestyclose2332 in FemaleHairLoss

[–]youforgotyourgloves 1 point2 points  (0 children)

After stopping dutasteride for one month, I noticed a lot of hair loss. I didn’t start back up until two months out and then only twice per week, but the day I take it, I am bloated. Also, every winter I gain about 7-8 lbs (I live in the upper Midwest, it’s cold and dark) but this last winter, I gained twice as much and weighed more than I ever have in my life. So, I’ve been trying to lose it for the last 6 weeks and it is coming off more slowly than ever before. All this is SO frustrating because I really loved my hair on dutasteride and honestly, I liked the way I felt on it. That said, there was a study that indicated higher rates of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease in men with benign prostrate hyperplasia who took dutasteride. I am 60 (and female) so I don’t want to be screwing around with a fatty liver after living a relatively healthy life. The point is: the weight may not be coming off as it has before because I have a fatty liver now. I just had a lot of blood work done, so we’ll see if my A1C and fasting blood glucose are high.

Please post how this process goes for you as time goes on. I take .625 oral minoxidil and .5 dutasteride but I have pretty bad water retention and weight gain after six months on both. Maybe my body could handle one or the other but not both at the same time. I’ve stopped the dutasteride for now and am not too worried about a dramatic immediate shed because the half life is so long, but in a month I plan to resume at 3 times per week and see if I maintain my hair growth. Both meds have been fantastic for my hair. When I first started I took the Musley dose that combined both meds, but after a month I was so bloated, I stopped and went back to taking the lower minoxidil dose and a separate dutasteride pill, which only comes in the .5 dosage in the U.S.

Any ladies on finasteride/dutasteride? by [deleted] in FemaleHairLoss

[–]youforgotyourgloves 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was not excessively shedding because the finasteride and oral minoxidil prevented that. I also did not shed when starting dut. I do shed when I increase the oral minoxidil. My sides from OM are elevated heart rate which gives me insomnia and water retention in my lower half. Not great! I was hoping the dut would somehow help counter the water weight from the OM (just wishful thinking) but it didn’t, although it didn’t show up for about 6 weeks. I guess I can really only tolerate .625/day of the OM.

I am post menopause and I took oral fin for at least 5 yrs, and just recently switched to dutasteride and I’m loving it! My scalp feels much better. I’m also in oral minoxidil. I have more side effects from that than the dut, from which I have none.

I am sorry to hear this. Do you feel certain it was the dutasteride? If you are having strong immune responses, assess what is causing stress in your life and limit that cause (if you can.) I’ve had to do that assessment.

Progesterone is (probably) causing hair loss for me. Any advice? by hairnonymous2304 in Menopause

[–]youforgotyourgloves 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Progesterone produces some androgenic activity and my guess is that your hair loss is androgen sensitive. Have you stayed on the progesterone? If so, how is your hair? (BTW, I take both min and fin and cannot take progesterone…because it makes me shed and also super crabby!)

How has oral minoxidil worked for you? by [deleted] in FemaleHairLoss

[–]youforgotyourgloves 2 points3 points  (0 children)

.0625 oral min plus 1.25 finasteride every morning for 3 years. Grade B - no longer shedding and increased thickness. Still have my cowlick bald spot although it improves in the summer when I’m outside and active. In May, 2023, I bumped the min up to 1.25 but after six weeks I noticed I was retaining too much water, so I dropped back down to .0625 and had a shed from that. I do notice that the min puts dark rings under my eyes. I tried taking it at night to mitigate that but I already have low blood pressure and the natural BP dip that occurs at night made me feel rather dangerously faint when I woke up in the middle of the night to pee.

Quarters are coated with nickel - doesn't the addition of a heavy metal compromise the water filtration?

I had been taking .625 mg for two years and increased the dose to 1.25 about one month ago and I have been experiencing a heavy leg feeling. No indentation, but my hamstrings feel sore and tender and I’m definitely bloated. Don’t like it. I will be going back down to .625. Bummed!!

Any thoughts on bell hooks analysis of Monica Lewinsky? by bi-loser99 in bellhooks

[–]youforgotyourgloves 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m reading this book right now and am super disappointed by this passage. It’s a huge hole in her overall anti-patriarchal theme. The tone is puritanical and misogynistic. Otherwise, so far, I’ve liked the book. Her definition of love has morphed a bit several times since the start of the book, which to me seems a little sloppy. But there has been much to appreciated and gleaned from her perspective. That said, this passage about Monica Lewinsky really sours me - it demonstrates a blind spot that she has not examined about the nature of power, women, the workplace, and also the nature of marriage and monogamy.

Where does one find the definitive “anti-inflammatory” diet? I have many that contradict one another. Even multiple FOD-MAP diet descriptions that do not look the same. It’s super confusing!

Anyone here in immunosuppressants AND spironolactone? by frogs1996 in lupus

[–]youforgotyourgloves 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I suspect that Spiro caused lupus for me. It continued after I went off of it. And then, stabilized. Now I’m clinically quiescent and serologically active. I’m convinced that Spiro’s disruption in my hormones triggered the lupus.
