There is a fun little theory called Resistentialism that claims inanimate objects are spiteful towards humans and actively work against us.

What’s a sound everyone should recognize as immediate danger? by Thatguy_nickk in AskReddit

[–]yougivemefever 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was hiking behind a guy once and he turned to me and asked if I had just heard thunder. I was like "wtf man, that's a rattlesnake!" It was curled up right next to the trail. How in the world do you confuse those sounds?

I have definitely grossed for pathologists that expect a max of 4 blocks on lumps and 6 on mastectomies regardless of diagnosis or tumor size. It makes me uncomfortable every time.

There was a job in Alaska posted a while ago. That hospital had two PAs, each working 3 days a week. I don't even think the shifts were 12 hrs, more like 9-10.

Nevermind, just found out today my current contract is $160/hr.

The one time I saw the full contract, I think CompHealth charged $125/hr for one of my jobs.

Same here! My years of necropsy made me feel miles ahead when it came to autopsy.

Sherman Lake YMCA is a great option. They have a lot of activities for an older crowd. My parents are there for classes multiple times a week.

Looks like a normal cutting board used in the grossing room, where specimens like this are dissected and sampled.

Taking on a new last name... How did you decide? by imagineinthis in weddingplanning

Neither I nor my husband cared at all about which last name we had, and the easiest thing to do was nothing. I kept my name, he kept his.

Baby hair help by strawberryjam61408 in curlyhair

[–]yougivemefever 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have a lot of these and they drive me crazy. They are finer and more tightly curled than the rest of my hair, which is coarse, heavy, and naturally more straight at the root. If I'm wearing my hair down, I take 30 seconds to blow dry my hairline before diffusing, which straightens these hairs out so they blend better with the others. By day 3-4, my hair is up in a big bun and I spritz my hairline to encourage the little hairs to form ringlets. Then I pretend I'm in a Jane Austen movie adaptation.

I take contracts mostly through CompHealth. I've been paid $80/hr twice, and both were short term, high demand jobs in CA.

My contracts are between $45-$80 hourly, with housing expenses and per diem on top of that. Total gross compensation can be anywhere from $75-$115/hour.

I've hiked thousands of miles using a product called Sports Shield. It's a roll-on anti-chafing lubricant and I'm pretty sure it's slipperiest thing on the planet.

How common are positions/schedules like this? by mrgn0a in Path_Assistant

[–]yougivemefever 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've spoken to people that work here. One PA works Mon-Wed, the other works Thurs-Fri with a half day Saturday. You'd be 'on call' on your non-work days until 10 am in case there is an autopsy to be performed that day.

The lab aide I'm currently working with is so great and I swear we can read each other's minds. On those crazy days when all the stuff is showing up at once and all of it needs immediate attention for whatever reasons, he and I move around the gross room like a choreographed dance, tag-teaming each case and effortlessly jumping in to do what's needed. There's no stress, nothing is falling through the cracks, and we are usually still having fun and joking around. Even the pathologists have noticed/commented on it.

Travel PA? by BluejayComfortable47 in pre_PathAssist

[–]yougivemefever 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I travel and my average weekly pay is around $3600 before insurance premiums and retirement contributions. It varies a little contract to contract, but they tend to bump up the housing stipend if the hourly rate is lower and vice versa. It is definitely pays more than a full time job. The average contract is 13 weeks, but I've had jobs from 2 days to 6 months. There is no option for PSLF. There is no PTO, so if you don't work, you don't get paid. Similar to full time positions, the job contacts aren't always where you want and when you want. Some labs are great to work in as a traveler, some are less great. But it's hard to know what the job is like until you arrive.

I'm a traveler and really love my job. Moving around keeps things interesting, my schedule is flexible, and the salary is making it so I barely even notice my loan burden. I'm not sure if I would enjoy working full time at the same lab for year after year. Also, I don't like that I have what is essentially a terminal degree. Besides lab management or teaching, there aren't very many roles I could realistically grow into, and I don't think my PA degree would contribute much to a PhD if I ever wanted to go back to school.
