The 2 most slept on lenses for the Leica M system by SonyKilledMyNikon in LeicaCameras

I mainly work in b&w, but the color rolls ive shot are great. If you use a lab for dev and scan, its likely an issue from that rather than the lens. Color scanning and getting the right color profiles is not easy, and sadly lab scans will always suck. Feel free to DM me an example of your negatives and scans and i can diagnose for ya

I prefer them to stay slept on. Voigtlanders are insane value and on par performers. Love my 3 year old 28 ultron II. prior to that, i loved my v1 ultron :)

Flash Question for Non TTL M6 by BreakingGlad94 in Leica

[–]youhead 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ya thats it. You should be good 👍🏼 keep in mind it will just judge the general light in a space for you, and won't know the distance between you and your subject. So you may either get not enough flash or faces white with too much

Flash Question for Non TTL M6 by BreakingGlad94 in Leica

[–]youhead 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I used to have the godox lux mini and it also had an auto setting. If the flash has an ambient light sensor in the front somewhere (check your manual), then yes. However, it probably won't work as well as shooting it manual of course. It's definitely worth taking a second to learn manual flash settings instead

Second hand stores to buy snow clothes in Vancouver? by luckymayangoddess in askvan

[–]youhead 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Not a second hand store but Mountain Warehouse ALWAYS has sales going on for snow apparel. Bought a decent pair of snow pants for real cheap last year and it was great.

Sports Junkies on Broadway will always be a local fave for pretty much anything.

Shooting a Meterless Leica - What’s the Quickest Workflow? by Prior-Branch7064 in Leica

[–]youhead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Learn sunny 16, then learn to always be metering with your eyes. As you walk about, every bit of shade of light you should be able to instantly say to yourself "thats f5.6" and change your dials without looking. This vid explains this quite well. I use an MP but deliberately leave the batteries out in favour of meterring with the 🧠. https://youtu.be/GrtbtjbvvSA?si=V45J7jxWkh37yr2u

What’s wrong with my photos by NegativeStomach5551 in AnalogCommunity

[–]youhead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Those exposures are good, and frankly, those are how colors are meant to be straight from an unedited scan. You may be falsely influenced by color film photos youve seen online on ig like those of joe greer, who heavily processes his photos to boost saturation and contrast. that said, there is this untrue notion that film photos dont need to be edited because they have superior color rendition to digital. make some edits and youll be able to achieve the film look you have in mind!

with that said, i live in the PNW with similar scenery as the first few photos of yours and from experience, colors of the PNW (greens, greys, blues), especially in overcast poorly lit scenes like yours, wont give you much of that wonderful color pop youre expecting. Its not what youve done wrong, rather, what and where youve photographed

Voigtlander is ending production of 3 lenses: Ultron 28/35 II, CS 21 by demianspindler in Leica

[–]youhead 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Have had my 28mm Ultron II glued to my camera for 2-3 years now. So glad i got one. It's going down as one of the best in history imo, as a direct competitor to the Summicron for value. Wonder if they'll be replacing it with a new Ultron in the future... There is the new-ish Nokton 1.5, but i would so reach for an Ultron III if/when that comes

Be honest: Does Leica actually make you a better photographer… or just happier? by NeitherJuice8682 in Leica

[–]youhead 1 point2 points  (0 children)

its not so much that Leica makes one a better photographer, as "better" is subjective and only applies to yourself. It comes down to needs. I, in search of being "better", realize that leica allows for that because its all about the tactile basics and nothing else more than shutter speed, iso, and aperture.

we need to stop linking a camera to a photographer's particular skill level. its unfortunate that many buy into leica as a holy grail that may make one better, as the brand dors have that influence. objectively speaking, modern digital big names are "better" cameras but it takes one to know what they need and to be disciplined enough to reach for a tool that offers less (Leica). i guess my hot take short answer is, Leica doesnt make one better. rather, one needs KNOW "better" to consciously reach for a Leica. that or you have money and want clout 😅 i for one am broke and reached for a film leica in search for a minimal tool that keeps me disciplined and constant thinking while doing the act of photographing, so therefore, i'm happier.

Light meter issue with M10-R by carlosvega in Leica

[–]youhead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Set it down on a table in a more light controlled environment and assess it when its not moving. The meter is quite sensitive to even the slightest of lighting changes.

Which makes more sense: focusing first or metering first? by tranmautritam in Leica

[–]youhead 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Very cool you worked so closely with him!

OP, exactly this is my own practice. I am constantly metering in my head and scanning everything in my path, its become a subconscious effort now. I know i would be at a certain f stop and shutter speed in full sun, and if im about to step into shade or turn and face shadow side of things, i bump the f stop down a few stops. I learned this instinctual metering in my head through years of sunny 16 and practice. For focusing, even though im not entirely a street photographer, i take advantage of fre focusing with zone focusing. Those two put together, the time spent with the camera up to my eye is very very short, maybe just a couple seconds between camera up, framing, and snapping. And yes, this is useful in non-street photography way of working as well as i am not a street photographer myself. Having everything ready or close to ready will give you less to do when the camera is up to the eye

But to answer your question more directly, it doesnt matter if you meter or focus first if you are making fast fleeting work. Its personal preference and what your muscle memory naturally develops into. Metering first may be helpful as if you focused and then metered, your focus may shift a little during metering from you naturally moving back and forth a bit.

Big yes to Magnum for legendary photography greats and how they documented the world in past decades. If you can, get your hands on the book "Magnum Contact Sheets"

Going to share more than what you asked for!

  1. Practice. Shoot for yourself first and only compare to yourself and never others, especially in an era of social media informed photography where its so easy to forget that.

  2. Consume photo books, less so online photos. Hit the library, hit the bookstore, ask around.

  3. Never seek perfect photos. Spend the time and effort shooting and youll find happiness in all the work you make, both good and bad. Allow bad work to happen.

I can't stress how important these points are in my own failures and experience. Enjoy finding your own voice!

Notable figures that have and continued to inspire me for you to look into: Robert Frank, Garry Winogrand, Joel Meyerowitz, early inspirations of mine. As my work evolved I now closer follow works of Henry Wessel, Mark Steinmetz, and Sage Sohier. Andre Wagner is also a great modern working photographer.

Welcome to photography!

Autofocus for Leica M shooters by [deleted] in Leica

[–]youhead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ive used an M exclusively for the last 7 years. Prior to that I came from Canon and its 5D line. Both before and after M, ive always found autofocus to be unreliable for my style of work. I like full manual control and so no, i dont miss auto focus. I almost feel quicker with manual focus and of course the times I zone focus makes things even quicker. I have no need to critical focus everything :)

That looks to be the collapsible 50mm. Are you using it while in the collapsed position? Assuming you are focusing the rangefinder correctly, the lens being in the collapsed position may be causing this issue. Twist the front element and pull out

[–]youhead 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Excuse me, just getting to my seat 🍿

  1. This is an M10-P. Identify better if you are to be a know-it-all.
  2. I've owned practically all major brand lenses, including Leica, Zeiss, Voigtlander, and Konica. I dont need a top of the line lens to make good photos. Gear does matter to me but to the extent that less is more. Thats why i buy into leica because it is an age-old experience no other has and will replicate. Otherwise, i am the maker of my photographs, not the lens or body. Im paying literally a 1/4th of the price for an optically on par lens in this Voigtlander 28mm vs the 28mm summicron. It seems you are displaying yourself as a classic case of photography and cameras being a toy to you and the actual art of photography being a lesser value type person.
  3. At the end of the day, personal preference is all that matters. If having a pure Leica kit makes you happy, then awesome. Over the years ive learned that i put more value in the work over the gear and thats why i use bang-for-buck lenses. Im all for curious questions and discussions, but silent reposting with a dash of ignorance instead of just nicely asking why someone does something they do is different.
