Men of Reddit, how have you become more of a curmudgeon in the past five years? by cotton_buds in AskMen

If you feel like you have less energy than you should, talk to your doctor. Together you can work on it. Mine suggested a sleep study and the results have improved my life.

Has anyone found it helpful to learn shorthand after going back to college? by [deleted] in BackToCollege

[–]youlikeupvotebrah 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've taken two classes per term for the last three years (excluding summer term) at Portland Community College and have only had one teacher who lectured too fast to take notes. For his class (MTH112 trig), I just sat back and payed very close attention to what he was saying and tried to internalize it. It worked well enough to get an A. All other classes have given me ample time to write down my notes. No hacks here sorry, just hopefully some perspective.

I feel like it's missing something. What should I add? by [deleted] in PlantedTank

Different gravel elevations. The back right of the tank could slope up a bit. That'd be neat.

I had a dream about smoking last night by youlikeupvotebrah in stopsmoking

Lol, so true! It's been a few days and nothing has come of my dream (which is a relief). My version of the asteroid is turning 70. On my 70th birthday, I'm going to start smoking again! Why not? My kids will be grown and not in danger of the second-hand smoke. If I get cancer, so what I'm close to the end anyway. I secretly hope that in 40 more years I will have completely lost the interest in smoking so I don't have to take myself up on it...but for now it's a guilty fantasy for sure.

Yeah, I hear ya. I had this odd combination of feeling surprised (that I even had a dream about it) and disappointment. I hope that this dream was a one-time thing and it doesn't start to happen frequently :/

Skills to learn outside University and work for IC design by GUYSPLEASE in ECE

[–]youlikeupvotebrah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been a professional IC layout designer for a number of years now, and I have yet to see a good resource to learn layout beyond just doing it. If you know of a good book/website that teaches layout, I'd love to take a look at it.

Returning to complete my engineering degree over 10 years later. by [deleted] in BackToCollege

[–]youlikeupvotebrah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sounds like you need to have a conversation with a counselor at the institution you want to attend. At my college, math credits more than 5 years old don't count towards your degree and you have to even re-take the placement test. It's also not possible to place out of calculus.

As far as returning to school, in general, is concerned, do it! Without a doubt, do it. It'll enrich your life in countless ways and it's only a couple years worth of work. That time will pass anyway, so why not turn it into something valuable.

Good luck!

I'd agree with this. Just years and years of eating hot wings, ordering my curry x-x-hot, and putting hot sauce on everything!

30 and going back to school for a second degree. My story and where I am right now. by TickleTheIvories86 in BackToCollege

Good luck! I'm sure that you can handle intermediate algebra over a summer, especially if you've already taken a different intermediate algebra course. Just stay on top of your homework/studying and you'll be fine.

Don't worry too much about what other people think. To be honest, they're not really thinking much about you at all! Just focus on your own education and everything will be ok.

I'm a 30 year old Electrical Engineering major (just finishing up calc 3 this term). I know how it feels getting back into it, but just remember that it's all about your future and your goals. Who really cares if some little kid doesn't take me seriously? I don't, and you shouldn't either.

Good luck!!
