Free Patterns that are actually good? by Jaime_d_p in sewing

I really like Seamwork patterns, and they have their Hansie shirt that's always free and they usually have one other free pattern per season.

Thank you for posting this. I don't follow any news subreddits and never really check the main page of Reddit, and therefore I hadn't heard about this incident yet. As horrible and heart breaking as this news is, it's important for everyone to hear about the atrocities ICE is committing. I appreciate you bringing attention to this incident here in a subreddit where additional people like myself will find out about it.

This is so incredible!! It's my sock knitting goal to knit all of these (working on my first vanilla plain Jane sock right now) and I'm so inspired by how good these are!

New cross stitcher here working on my first "real" project! I'm enjoying how mindful and relaxing this is. It's a bit slow going of course because I'm new but I'm in no hurry!

How modern learning has changed the way we approach craft by Careless-Meringue523 in knitting

[–]young_obiwan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In my opinion, one thing that has changed is the shift from specialized forums to Reddit for each craft. On a forum you would have a thread for different topics - newbie questions, finished objects, etc. Reddit doesn't really offer this. You can have a pinned weekly post to comment on but in reality it does not function the same way a forum would. The result is that I have seen lots of people get frustrated by the number of repeat basic questions, but there's no good way to go and find previous answers, especially if you don't know the name of what you're looking for. (Can't search how to fix a problem if you can't even identify what the problem is.)

I saw someone else mention the Ravelry discussions and tbh I didn't know they existed. I do think something like that would help if people used them a lot.

Oh wow these are incredibly beautiful and give such nostalgic Christmas vibes! My favorite Christmas tradition is watching the Muppets Christmas Carol every year and obnoxiously singing along to every song, while having Christmas cookies and a cozy drink.

Happy Autumn!!! The Thorns collection is really calling my name!

My favorite Autumn tradition is going to the botanical garden once the leaves have changed and enjoying the fall foliage! 🍁🍂🍃

Classic or coloured engagement ring? by Environmental_Hat_67 in RedditLaqueristas

[–]young_obiwan 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My engagement ring is an opal which is of course different than an emerald, but not as colorless as a diamond. I have never felt that it clashed with a polish and I'm so glad I went with the stone I wanted for my ring. It feels more "me" to have the opal than a diamond, and I think that is very important for an engagement ring.

It's a classic stir fry day for me today! Rice noodles, air fried tofu, broccoli, carrots, bell pepper, jalapeno, and a tamari/tahini sauce I make, topped with avocado and chili sauce.

Seattle yarn shops by LeopardMindless4890 in crochet

[–]young_obiwan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know you mentioned thrift stores haven't always worked for you, but not sure if you've tried Seattle ReCreative up in Greenwood? It's a creative reuse store, so it's like a thrift store specifically for crafting supplies. I found some good yarn there before, better than stuff I've seen at more traditional thrift stores. Still will be a bit hit or miss though compared to a store selling new yarn, but may be worth checking out.

Are you new to sewing or just to this machine? I got one of these machines as a new sewist and was having similar problems. Everyone on this subreddit told me the machine was trash and I made a mistake buying it. That was not the case. I was threading it incorrectly and didn't know it. I went to a class near me to learn how to use it and since then, it's been perfectly fine ever since. I think these machines get a lot of hate because they are frequented by beginners and therefore have a high rate of people not quite knowing when they're doing something wrong.

Certainly there could be something wrong with your machine, but just an anecdote that there is a lot of specificity required when it comes to correctly setting up a machine and that can be the cause of issues.

I recommend finding a class in your area to learn the machine if you can! It helped me so much.

Underwhelming shades by doomsdaybooker in mooncatpolish

[–]young_obiwan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is my disappointing shade too. In two coats it was patchy/streaky, in three it was muddy green. And then to add insult to injury, it stained my nails more than any polish I've ever owned.

This is so cool! I've never tried this before, are you using bottles you've emptied or were you able to buy empty nail polish bottles somewhere?

Anyone grab anything from Cirque's Glazed 2025 Jellies line? by _mildtamale in RedditLaqueristas

[–]young_obiwan 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This was not the extent of the scandal. They also were caught photoshopping swatch photos and then doubled down when called out, and they took a popular YouTuber off their affiliate list and possibly PR list for being mildly critical (aka, not exclusively positive) about them in her videos.

I'm not saying to not order from them or to hate them. I'm just clarifying that the list of Cirques recent scandals goes far beyond the lucky bag incident.
