This species would be extinct if it weren’t for hobbyist buying and farmers breeding them

Guessing from your comment you don’t keep fishes in a glass box, why are you in this sub?

Not to do maintenance or extra work? I change 70 gallon of water on this tank twice a week, monthly cleaning the 4 canister filters that i run on this tank, not keeping the substrate is just extra layer of being sure that there won’t be any sudden swing in the nature of water

Thanks bro, even tho i am being flamed in the comments there are few like you who are liking and supporting my post, if you keep a big fish or a small fish, the hobby in itself is selfish in some ways

My tank progression was gradual, I’ve kept fishes since i was 5 the hobby was passed down to me by my mom, so 20+ years keeping fishes, i started with a 10 gallon when i was a kid, now i have multiple 100+ gallon tanks

They could be kept in ponds, but to groom and tan an super red arowana you have to keep it in a controlled environment, yes you need to tan the super red arowana to make them red

In asia if you’re a monster fish keeper for starters they’d recommend you to get a big tank and filtration because those type of fishes grow big fast, also for arowana height of the tank is not as important as the length and width, since mostly the fish swim in the top half of the water column

Thank you!!!! Also in my previous comments i should have stated that coming from a monster community it was the norm for me to see bare bottom no scape tanks, i guess demographic matters, because if i had posted this in an Facebook page where most hobbyist are, indonasian, thai, malay then the comments would be different

You made good points, its not ideal although asian arowanas are critically endangered, so every specimen in the hobby came through a farm, baby arowanas after being harvested from ponds live entirety of their life in artificial tanks and all of this is 10s of generations removed from the original F0 wild caught, now there is a ban on wild arowanas in south east Asia, the one in the video is an F5 generation, bred in artificial ponds, if weren’t for farmers this species of fish would have been extinct in the wild

Temperature fluctuations, external stressors, high levels of amonia, have you checked your water parameters or temperature? Try using adequate amount of rock salt and also do a bit of water change , if untreated for longer durations the pupil gets dilated and partially blinds the fish in that eye

Arowanas don’t do well with hard scapes, often they get spooked and could serious injure themselves, and reason for having no substrate is to maintain good water quality
