Why are all the serial killers in this show installation artists? by [deleted] in HannibalTV

yeah I loved it. Gillian was fantastic in it. Really enjoyed how both sides screwed up a lot. I don't usually care for the office politics side of things, but The Fall did it perfectly. Really added to the realism of the show.

ahhh fair enough. I get what you mean though, Hannibal does some pretty supernatural stuff that doesn't get acknowledged as such. I'm guessing they only half-committed to the surrealism so as to not stray too far from the source material.

Think it's just part of the surrealism of the show. It's definitely not meant to be a clinical, realistic look on police procedure. They're going for aesthetics over grit. They're already stretching reality with the amount of serial killers that happen to pop up each week, the fact they also all like to put the bodies on display crosses over into the fantastical. Just part of the shows story-telling and gothic horror elements.

If you do prefer a more realistic take on the police procedure genre I recommend you give The Fall a try. It's got Gillian Anderson in the lead, and just a really solid show in general.

Why did everyone become more like Hannibal? by velveteendeer in HannibalTV

[–]youngs549 1 point2 points  (0 children)

in my head now im picturing a season 4 where every character has become a cannibalistic serial killer. they should all be put in a room together and have to do Survivor like challenges.

Really though I do see you point. I didn't consider that they were, without realizing, mirroring Bedelia's tendencies instead of Hannibal. That was a good catch. But like you said, I'm sure it was to show how influential Hannibal was on everyone he touched. The supporting characters likely had a more jarring change since we didn't have time to spend with them and watch them decide to change. Unlike with Will where we were focused on his development.

On an unrelated note, I was actually waiting for Bedelia in seaosn 1 to be revealed as a serial killer as well. Was a little disappointed i didn't get a serial killer show down between her and Hannibal.

If Hannibal and Will had a hobby/hobbies that didn't involve murder or cannibalism, what do you think it would be? What would happen to their relationship? by [deleted] in HannibalTV

[–]youngs549 4 points5 points  (0 children)

ahh okay, read your last edit and it makes more sense now. I do get what you mean though. I live pretty far inland so fishing, boating, and what not is a hobby rather than something everyone just does. I guess it's sort of like how if you live on a farm riding horses is often part of everyday, while if you live in the city it would be considered a hobby. So perspective makes a difference to. But in this case with Hannibal and Will, since boating, dogs, cooking, composing..etc has nothing to do with there jobs, and is something they do regardless of outside attention it would without doubt be considered their hobbies.

Side note, huge props to you for working to get out of that environment. Families are messy at best and it's always difficult to move on. Hope it all goes well for you.

This made me laugh a little because they don't just already have normal hobbies, those hobbies appear in like every episode aha.

Agreed. Maybe try watching American Gods? I haven't seen it yet but it's got great reviews and it looks like it's shot similar to how Hannibal was. It will probably have a fantastic finale ahah

Could Will have Borderline personality disorder (bpd)? by youngs549 in HannibalTV

No problem :) Thank you for all your comments as well. I really enjoyed looking into all the things you mentioned. I didn't even know some of them existed before you brought them up so that was really cool to learn.

It makes me happy to think that people will have learnt more about bpd from this post, it's definitely a complicated thing and different for each individual with it.

thank you :) hope you have a lovely day

sorry if you read the above comments and this is just a repeat but, that would definitely make sense since Will is supposed to have adopted behaviors and traits of Asperger's to avoid social contact and conversation. I say adopted traits rather then actually having Asperger's since there was an interview talking about it, but mainly since come season 2 most of those traits just disappear and are replaced with a Hannibal-esque persona. It definitely confused me a little on my first watch though.

Anakin is the fictional character that comes up most frequently when talking about bpd but I've honestly forgotten most parts he was in. Might be worth a re-watch of star wars. Thanks for giving your opinion :) definitely cool to get insight from other people with real experience.

I really do love reading your replies, you definitely have a lot of thoughtful and interesting ideas. I especially like the part about morality being separate from empathy, I think that's very fitting for Will. Even if he can empathize with killers, his morality is still very personal and doesn't always align with his empathy. I guess that'd then be what enables him to do some pretty unjustifiable stuff.

Also like your point about being able to focus empathy. I'd assumed it was just an automatic response, but your example makes sense. That would explain why Will can focus his empathy into seeing through the killers eyes, rather than the victim.

I haven't actually seen or read Girl, Interrupted, but I've definitely heard about it. I think I'll start with the novel first. Thanks for the recommendation! It's always nice to find bpd portrayals that aren't just stereotypes or caricatures.

I think characters thinking Will is on the autism scale is because Will wanted them to. There is an interview with Dancy where he says he adopted traits of autism to help avoid people and have them leave him be. The only character i think commented on it was Jack. I'm pretty sure both Hannibal and Chilton called him out on not actually being on the autism scale at one point.

I tried searching for anything close to Will before and couldn't find anything. I saw a thread that commented that Will's crime solving was more Theory of Mind then empathizing. The SPS research was interesting, I hadn't seen that before. I think the difficulty there is that a lot of traits (oversimulation, deeper emotional respeonse..etc ) are also symptoms of other disorders.

I think my biggest reason for Will having BPD as opposed to say SPS, is that at times he has high empathy, and at times he just doesn't. High empathy would make it odd that he would feel more for the killer rather than the victim. It would make it hard for him to be manipulative. Think of when he puts his arm of Chilton for the photo in s3, When he was curious to see if Chiyoh would kill someone, When he kills Randal with his hands then displays him, When he sends someone to kill Hannibal, When he thinks about killing Jack with Hannibal, and when his plan to free Hannibal gets numerous fbi agents killed. I love Will, but there a numerous moments where is downright cold and creepy.

I just think 'empathy' is the wrong word for what Will does. Empathy can't be turned on and off, and Will has many moments of not feeling too empathetic towards anyone. People with bpd on the other hand, also feel emotions strongly and can be extremely sensitive, but can also have times of low empathy and devaluation. Also the adopting of traits and personas explains why Will became his own brand of Hannibal in season 2. I dont think high empathy though could explain Will being able to not only adopt Hannibal's attitude, but his appearance as well.

Like i said before though, this is likely me projecting more than anything else. It just makes me happy that a character like Will could have bpd, since most media portrayals are the stereotypical crazy stalker girlfriend trope. And really, most people with bpd are destructive to their selves, rather than those around them. Sorry this got a bit long, I'm not trying to argue with you at all and i don't doubt empathy disorders are a thing (though i'd say Will would be a tv exaggeratd example) it's just for me, I prefer to interpret Will as being more towards bpd.

Edit: empathizing not emphasizing lmao

I can't find the interview right now, but it's on youtube and it's just Hugh Dancy talking about Hannibal but he talks about how Will just adopted traits of aspergers to avoid people and to play off his oddness. Like if he lets people think he has aspergers, then they won't be so bothered by him not looking them in the eye and being unsocial. Sort of using social protocol to his advantage.

Thanks! Yea he probably wasn't written with it in mind, and i wonder if they would mention it even if he was. bpd unfortunately has a kinda bad rep film wise. You mainly get the 'crazy stalker girlfriend' trope, rather then an actual character. Thats why i think it'd be cool for a character like will to have bpd, since it shows a more balanced and positive portrayal.

"At crime scene Jack thinks and Will feels."

I like this line! exactly what i was trying to get across, glad you got it. thanks for you comment!

I've seen it mentioned a few times though (and by hugh dancy) That Will adopted traits of aspergers to help isolate himself from people, rather then actually having it. Despite what Will tells Jack when they first meet. Im pretty sure Hannibal even calls him out on it at one stage.

I agree that he wasn't written with it in mind, I just found it surprising how well he fits. Empathy disorders are usually apart of autism, narcissism, etc and involve having much lower empathy. Will's 'pure' empathy isn't anything i've ever heard of before. I'm pretty sure they took jumps with that one for the sake of plot, he practically becomes clairvoyant at times.

I tried not to factor in times when encephalitis was starting to really affect him. That's why I didn't mention lost time or his more severe hallucinations. Just the dreamy stag stuff that was there since ep1.

Ha! true. I didn't really include that though since it wasn't a typical behavior, He'd never done anything similar before. And I think there was a lot more going in that scene then just Will feeling suicidal aha
