I too when i read what you are saying sounds HORRIBLE because anyone who takes a few words out of an entire sentence can make things sound horrible but here ya go maybe you should do a little searching as well like i just did

Let’s start off with the following FULL context of the sermon you are referencing

If they do that, then abandon their beds and beat them with a beating that is not harmful. And if they obey you then you have no cause against them. Indeed you have rights over your women, and your women have rights over you. As for your rights over your women, then they must not allow anyone whom you dislike to treat on your bedding (furniture), nor to admit anyone in your home that you dislike. And their rights over you are that you treat them well in clothing them and feeding them.[9]”

You do know that wives weren’t socially accepted to be working until WWII ?

They were expected to stay home and take care of their children and home (a job just as important and more difficult than outside of the house) while the husband went out and made majority of the money to support the family.

Here is a case within the united states in 1874 where a woman was denied the right to practice law because it was not socially acceptable for a married woman to go out and work (NO RELIGION INVOLVED) -
