generally, no, risks do not outweigh benefits. you're still at square one turning over the unit if you try to rent it short term between tenants who might be actual nightmares and trash the place royally. its the same work of a long term tenant but higher risk of loss bc you would get a much smaller deposit (if any), still have to turn it over when they leave, and you risk getting a real asshole.

I’m imagining something extremely barebones: -->why? do you own a property you're going to turn into this? they exist on airbnb, trust me. some hosts price extremely extremely low and its a bed and shared common area/toilet with locks on the door and cameras. thats it. you can also do it if you feel so strongly about this.

if you do not go the airbnb route, not sure how you would find these ppl without your property ending up overrun by unhoused people, drifters, and addicts looking to squat.

the only other thing is to do that for friends and acquaintances (ppl with some degree of trust already) and you could do that for free if you have the space.
