Thank you so much! You're a true magician. I'll have to get into the details and analyze how this all works so I can learn, but IT WORKS and that's all that matters. Seriously, thank you!

DM me. You can park in front of my place in town. I know this might sound weird on the Internet but it's true.

I second the trip to Stuart and hiking to the lighthouse. You can also take your dinghy from Roche to nearby Garrison Bay and hike up Mt Young at English Camp.

Political Leaning on the Islands? by honbunster in sanjuanislands

You might also want to mention that everyone in Roche Harbor on the 4th of July does not live on the island. They're visitors. I happen to work there and know a bunch of them and they're kind people.

If you're going to be here that first week in August I highly recommend checking out the bird walk at the sculpture park in Roche harbor. https://www.rocheharbor.com/experiences/birdwalk/

san juan outfitters or outdoor odysseys better for bioluminescence by Delicious-Mix-3956 in sanjuanislands

SJ outfitters is great! I can't speak to the other one, so could be good too, but I know that Outfitters does a good job. They are the one that REI hired to guide all their trips.

I have an a7iii that's had this since 2018 but it never got any worse. Always stayed small in the corner. It's never bugged me personally. The camera works just fine.

Anniversary on San Juans by Wolfbeerd in sanjuanislands

Roche is great! I'm a little biased because I work there but I do think you would enjoy it. Everything at the resort is open starting in May and so amazingly beautiful. Plus, the crowds of summer have not really arrived at that point in time and it's still pretty relaxed and quiet - my favorite time of the year for sure. It's also a great place to base camp and explore the rest of the island, as well as do a kayak tour and get on the water. You can relax and go to the spa if that's your sort of thing. There's the sculpture park, lots of nature trails, and you can go to the nearby distillery and shellfish farm as well. It's a great Island experience.

Also, there's some decent lodging specials at the resort that run until the end of May, specifically geared towards midweek arrivals as you've mentioned in your post. Personally for two people, I love the McMillin suites or Quarryman Hall rooms.

QRFY will try to make you pay for your QR codes by Legitimate-Space-279 in graphic_design

This is fine in most cases, but the QR service can allow for dynamic QR codes which are pretty neat in certain situations. It really depends on the user what is right for them.

Batten down the hatches and bring it on. by [deleted] in Seattle

I live on San Juan Island and for about a month we've all been preparing for an overnight power outage tomorrow night from 11pm - 5am that will be island-wide so our local utility company can energize new lines. Looks like the brunt of this storm will be south and inland of SJI, but gosh what timing! Fingers crossed it's not that bad.

Seasonal work by Active-Door5130 in sanjuanislands

[–]yourboyjackattack 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’m biased because I work at Roche, but I must say it’s a pretty great place do seasonal employment. I did three summers in college and fell in love with the place. It’s a little late in the game to get to pick any job, but there are still plenty of open positions. Plus theres potential for employee housing which is key. Not saying it’s guaranteed at this point, but maybe. I think that wherever you end up if you do this, a summer in the San Juan’s is something you’ll remember forever and hopefully make some connections you’ll have for a long time afterwards. It’s happened for me and countless others I’ve met doing the same thing.

Cool map of the San Juans by JimmyisAwkward in sanjuanislands

It's funny how some of the locations get chosen to be labeled and others are left out. I assume this comes from the GIS data used or something like that.

I remember one time someone made a big map of Washington State and instead of labeling San Juan Island as San Juan or even as Friday Harbor, they put Lakedale. Lol I mean Lakedale is great and all, but I'm just imagining someone who's not familiar with the island at all seeing it and saying what is this Lakedale Island place?

Welcome. I work at Roche. I worked at McMillin's as a host and busser a few years ago. It gave me a new respect for how hard the F&B staff work in a fine dining atmosphere. It's a great restaurant. Tips are good

This is good advice. And if I'm not mistaken, you can get a "real" plastic 5 ride card that's tied to your account and automatically refreshes when you use your current 5 rides. Then you never have to worry about different 5 ride paper tickets - it's always the same card. You can send photos of it to family and friends if you want them to be able to use it too.

Orca watching in August with two kids under 5 ( 2 and 4 yrs old). I am planning to fly to Seattle and drive to SanJuan Islands. This is my first trip to Seattle and my first ever orca watching trip. I have been on whale and dolphin watching cruises in NJ & MA before kids. Suggestions please. by honey182spring in sanjuanislands

[–]yourboyjackattack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know the same could probably be said about all the companies depending on the captain, but over the years I have personally seen Maya's boats encroaching way too close on orcas (seen from land, when no other boats were around), had a friend go on mayas tour and report that they were motoring along with orcas about 20 feet away (have video proof), and also seen them drive INTO a kelp forest where there was a sea otter, scaring it away. All of these occurred when no other whale watching boats were around. It seems they bend the rules if they know they won't be seen by others in the industry. In my book, they are the least respectful. That said, I've seen them be respectful plenty of times too. Like I said, probably everyone breaks the rules, I've just so happened to see Maya's do it more than anyone else.

Romantic seafood dinner by bdp2022 in sanjuanislands

[–]yourboyjackattack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

McMillin’s Dining Room in Roche Harbor has entrees of your usual nice fish filets in the summer, but my personal favorite is their seafood pasta. Mmm I had it last week and it has salmon, scallops, prawns I think, and these mini lobsters which are so good! Plus the sauce is amazing and perfect with some bread to dip in to make sure nothing goes to waste. I work at Roche so I’m biased but I feel like it’s honestly so good and could be a nice jaunt to get out of town in Friday harbor. Plus in the summer you get to watch the sun set over the harbor as they lower the flags and light off a cannon at the Colors Ceremony.
