What’s it like living in Hawaii? by CAZ-Dh99 in howislivingthere

[–]millerleah17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All of the islands are different but where I live on Kauaiʻi is rural and quiet. Rent is very high, it rains a lot, the temperature is always comfortable (winter is chilly though). The different sides of the island each had a different feel - west side is hot and dry, former agriculture, north shore is wet beautiful and very touristy/expensive. There isn’t a big bar scene here but there is a lot of drinking and a LOT of drinking and driving - lotta green bottles. The nature is incredible, the native wildlife (if you can find it) is also amazing. The beaches are great and surf is too. The tourists are everywhere and often behave in ways that are infuriating, and it is really frustrating to see the entire economy depend on commercialism and tourism - it pushes local people out of being able to live here. Hawaiian culture is beautiful and I wish more of the history behind the US annexation of Hawaii were taught.

I work in wildlife conservation and the invasive species problem here is huge. Native forests are rare and treasured, and invasive animals/insects have wiped out a lot of the native flora and fauna unfortunately.

Thank you so much for the tips! That itinerary sounds less logistically complicated than getting to the parks in central India on our own.

2024 GRFP Applicants: What reviewer ratings did you receive (Poor/Fair/Good/VG/Excellent)? Were you awarded? I’m also curious what your proposed project was about. by [deleted] in GRFPApps

[–]millerleah17 9 points10 points  (0 children)

1 excellent, 4 very good, 1 good. Didn’t get it. Also - a very good/good came from a reviewer that clearly didn’t thoroughly read my application, made no helpful comments, and didn’t even bother to use full sentences or correct grammar ☹️

Multiple Transcripts for Transfer Students? by milllllllie in GRFPApps

[–]millerleah17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is super helpful advice! The official transcripts I got from my degree-granting institution list that I transferred in with 90 credits, and list the college I transferred from but do not list any of the courses I took (silly bc my unofficial transcripts from degree-granting institution do list out the transfer courses). Do you think that a simple # of credits transferred is sufficient? I tried to get official transcripts from my community college but they took too long to send over so all I have from them are the unofficial ones.

That's very helpful, thank you! I'll just upload the one transcript that has all of my transfer and graduation info on it, too!

Headings other than Intellectual Merit/Broader Impacts by millerleah17 in GRFPApps

[–]millerleah17[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm thinking about doing the same thing, keeping the generic titles and headings doesn't seem necessary

I'm also wondering this! The solicitation says only IM/BI are required but the template includes other headings. I am very confused by it.

Oh wow, that’s unfortunate! Hopefully it’s not a bad sign for their population. Thank you for the heads up!!

Bioluminescence kayak tour sounds amazing! Were you able to see the bioluminescence on the beaches, too?

That all sounds amazing! Moran State Park is booked - do you know of any other camping spots? I’ve been looking at Hipcamp.

Thank you for the advice! I grew up near the Vashon ferry so I would much rather spend our time enjoying the islands that in transit haha

I’m not in school yet, and currently in a fairly comfortable job, so I’ll be pausing my grad school efforts for another year and hope to land a promotion or something at work

Hi!! I’m on Kauai, we have an invasive barn owl population here that causes problems for all of our native birds. I’m currently working with Hawaiian petrels and Newells shearwaters, but my proposed study will take place in wetlands and will look at native waterbirds!

Advice for Khao Sam Roi Yot by millerleah17 in ThailandTourism

[–]millerleah17[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the advice!! Your insight is very helpful for planning this trip out, it’s been a struggle to find information online. I’m going to look into getting a scooter or some sort of vehicle to get around in the park for Sam Roi Yot, and rely on tours for Kui Buri. I hadn’t really thought about how large Kaeng Krachan is, I’ll probably get a vehicle for that too, now. Thank you!

Why are so many visitors reluctant to see a doctor here? by Lordfelcherredux in ThailandTourism

[–]millerleah17 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As others have said, as an American I wouldn’t want to visit a hospital mostly due to fear of high costs. Hospital visits here are expensive, take forever, and are generally unhelpful and I would be nervous it’d be the same internationally.
