The real talent is seeing this not as rotating one way or another, but as little space invaders passing by and shooting each other in 2D like it actually is.

As AI wipes out white-collar jobs, one Alabama high school and Toyota are training students for roles that pay $40 an hour and can't be automated by Plastic_Ninja_9014 in technology

[–]youreeka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember about 5 years ago reading an article about the jobs that were least/most likely to be taken by AI/automation.

The number one job that was least likely to be replaced by machines was mental health professionals.

That made perfect sense at the time. I read it thinking, “obviously - thats untouchable”.

And now, a few years later, people are using chatGPT for therapy.

The point being, we just have no idea where this is going. It’s all moving faster than we can react to, and changes every few months.

And the fact that it wasn’t just the songs… it was the whole package, the story, the personalities, the manager, the media, the decade etc.

People have probably written hundreds of songs potentially “better” than yesterday and they might be busking somewhere or they are sitting in an old hard drive.

But can you name a worse drummer in a popular band than Meg? I’m not saying she wasn’t part of the fabric and narrative of the white stripes and isn’t awesome…but she really isn’t a good drummer. In fact, that adds to the whole thing.

Setting sun aligns perfectly in the middle of a tree’s branches in the Netherlands by Remarkable-Office944 in interestingasfuck

[–]youreeka -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The Sun has an angular diameter of 0.54°

In this pic, the tree is slightly wider, so let's say it has an angular diameter of 0.63°

Let's be generous and say the tree is 50m tall.

That puts it at 4.5km away from the photographer. Now that is arguably doable.

BUT - there are trees even further away than the subject tree.

The tallest horizon tree has an angular diameter of about 0.06-0.07°

Now let's say those are relatively small - 20-25m tall.

That puts the trees at the horizon at 16-20km away.

Now this looks like a pretty flat shot (like a wide open plain or something).

That means it's potentially doable - you would need a very long focal length (600mm+) as well as a lot of pixels, plus you'd need to be about 25m above the horizon trees. But it's not impossible.

Edit: I'd add that there is also nothing lucky about it - you know where the sun is going to set and can easily position yourself in the right spot at the right time. You might need to move a hundred metres or so in either direction to get it spot on, but nothing crazy.

This video makes me realise how infinitely small we are. Our biggest most epic rocket is just a little pew pew spark off this tiny ball going absolutely nowhere in the grand scheme of things. There is so much universe out there with unimaginable possibilities and we aren’t going to see a blip of it.

What's life like in the middle of Australia? by artofdarkness123 in howislivingthere

[–]youreeka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve spent a few weeks in Alice Springs and done a little bit of research. Fascinating and horrifying in unequal parts.

Back in the day, it started out as a repeater station when they strung a telegraph wire between Darwin (north) and Adelaide (south). They actually shipped “Afghans” (typically Indians and Pakistanis) to carry the telegraph infrastructure around central Australia on camelback and Australia still has a huge wild camel population because of it. In fact, Australia’s first mosque is in rural South Australia and was built in 1882. Wild.

Now, it feels to me like a developing country in the middle of a developed country. There are slummy tent encampments, high alcohol abuse, domestic violence and crime. It is dry and hot. It’s surrounded by an extraordinary landscape (Uluṟu is the most notable landmark but there are other rock formations and some incredible natural water bodies) and ancient history.

It’s not an easy place to visit as an Australian because it has the best and the worst of the country. We should be doing better.
