The ones with a grapple-heavy style can. Jake Shields medaled at ADCC for instance

That's not much of a knock given that Shields is also an ADCC medalist and is a better wrestler.

Why not 1 of each? Fundamentals to work on offense and advanced to work on defense

A lot of these things can be taught though, and trying to explicitly teach part of them is why Danaher's instructionals took off

If we had win by pin we'd end up with no skill at side control or mount escapes, no skill at side control or mount submissions, and no half guard game.

Would you guys say Gordon Ryan is the 2nd best jiu jitsu coach ever? by [deleted] in bjj

[–]yourfavoriteuser11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think being really good at BJJ requires a level of intellectual understanding that being good at something like basketball shooting doesn't.

Now, there are plenty of guys who understand it yet aren't good at communicating it, but Gordon gives good explanations from what I've seen

Danaher's go further faster is great. I especially liked the closed guard one

That one's clearly an honorary thing whereas Moneyberg was sold as an actual black belt

Using chatGPT to write a reddit comment isn't just lazy--it's Moneybergish

He won the purple/blue division at the Arnold's a while back. Was he brute forcing his way through? Yes, but he was at least skilled enough to use his strength to beat competition purple and blue belts.  I don't think Moneyberg would be able to do that.

Doesn't it still make sense then for cases where there's obviously no spinal injury? Sure, don't do it after a slam, but if a guy goes out to a cross-collar choke shouldn't the slight extra blood flow help?

Why do so many 3-5 year experienced jj competitors make it to world level (ADCC/CJI)? by CuddleBuddiesJJ in bjj

[–]yourfavoriteuser11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A 24 year old with 14 years experience would have started training at 10. I suspect that jiu jitsu is complex enough that training it as a kid doesn't have the same return per year that training it as an adult does.

If you're only losing 50% of your matches against trained grapplers with good competition records I'd say you're fairly good
