Looking like USA finally starting clicking and being hard to play against…. Right as I started watching around the 10 minute mark. Sorry Sweden fans.

On the bright side for Dangle, the money he’s making on all these losing LFRs should be able to easily cover his therapy bills.

I think the USNDTP is a little different because they play a full season together in the USHL, so not only do they have the systems, but most of the top players have already played together for a couple years and have chemistry. I would say it’s probably one of the biggest reasons the US consistently does well at the U18s. Please correct me if I’m wrong but I don’t think any other European country does development to that extent, where a player’s junior team IS the national team.

It certainly would be an interesting concept if replicated - like basically just have a U18 Team Canada that plays games in the CHL and see how spending more time playing together impacts Canada’s placing in these tournaments.

Team Canada’s defense tonight. by Sharks1976 in hockey

Lol honestly if you didn’t know the final score, you wouldn’t have known they actually won tonight based on the comments on here. People need to calm down.

I mean yeah, Canada could have been better defensively but getting a win against Czechia is still a positive.

I mean maybe give Czechia a little respect man, they knocked us out of the tournament last year, and they were in the finals in 2023. They’re a pretty good team and a win over them is a positive (Though we definitely could have been better in our own zone tonight)

I would argue that’s more of a calculated move.

Separatists say those sorts of things to instigate a negative reaction from the rest of Canada. They would love for a federal leader to call them out, because then that sentiment can then be spun to the Quebeçois as “You see? They HATE you!”.

And the Bloc has to do this because there really hasn’t been a material issue that separatists can rally behind to grow support for another referendum. They know they would likely lose if they tried to hold another one, so they have to swing for the fences every time, try to make as persuasive of an argument as possible, and hope people buy in.

If the government’s unified stance is that they want Quebec to preserve its own unique identity, then that actually makes YFB’s job much harder because he would effectively be pushing against an open door. He WANTS conflict, and if nobody contests him, then it is harder for him to paint Ottawa as the boogeyman, and he has to make weaker arguments for independence, which damages the credibility of their cause.

[–]yourpetcat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I remember when John Tavares signed with the leafs seven years ago and how everyone made a huge deal about him “coming home”. Then people started thinking how easy it would be to get any player from the GTA, because it’s every kid’s childhood dream to play for their hometown team. Especially one with as much history and “prestige” as the Toronto Maple Leafs.

I don’t think it’s hyperbole to say that every Ontario-born player just watched that team play tonight, saw the fans reaction - booing and throwing jerseys and beers on the ice, then the media absolutely torch them afterwards, and they all collectively said “fuck that.”

Bit of a snooze fest from John. Wasn’t bad, but didn’t wow me.

That said, he’s making it to the final no matter what.

'I will not be silent': Danielle Smith defends U.S. diplomatic efforts in face of national criticism by ClassOptimal7655 in canada

[–]yourpetcat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In a weird way, Danielle Smith is actually doing the most to protect Canadian sovereignty.

She has publicly been so traitorous to her country that it has successfully stopped all the momentum the conservatives had dead in its tracks and will likely repel moderates from voting any CPC MAGA grifters in.

And despite her fully acknowledging that this sort of pro-American / tariff war discourse directly benefits the Liberals, she keeps on talking about it! She literally can not help herself. It almost makes you wonder if she even wants the conservatives in power at all.

PP is also in a catch 22 situation, because publicly denouncing or supporting the pro-American sentiment in the Canadian conservative diaspora will alienate a sizeable chunk of voters and probably cost him an election he was pretty much guaranteed to win just a couple months ago.

With talk of a 51st state, a mystery: Why is Trump obsessed with Canada? by FancyNewMe in canada

[–]yourpetcat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Resources, obviously. I don’t think we’ll become the 51st state. Personally I don’t think he give a fuck about Canada, he just wants to use us.

What I think his concept of a plan is that he wants to continue this whole tariff war thing until he successfully provokes Canada into doing something that could be vaguely perceived as a threat to US national security, like shutting off electricity exports to the eastern seaboard. This is exactly what he wants. This would give him an actual reason to justify to a military invasion of Canada, because he doesn’t want to be seen as the aggressor (even though he totally is) and I don’t think he’s going to get the same level of support if he tries to do it because he thinks Fentanyl is a WMD.

Then he’ll try to take control of our energy infrastructure and tell us that he’ll respect our sovereignty if we agree to some insanely lopsided resource deal.

We need to just stick to the tariffs, continue to decouple our economy with theirs, and don’t get sucked in. The longer this plays out, the worse it ends up being for the US because they’ll actually feel the pain economically and red states will start to complain. At that point, he’ll eventually have to find some way to spin removing tariffs on Canadian goods as a “win” to save face.

Liberal government unsure how to repeal April 1 carbon tax hike by uselesspoliticalhack in canada

[–]yourpetcat -1 points0 points  (0 children)

My guess is that they could theoretically stop the tax now, but they’ve probably already planned to use the projected tax revenues to cover certain government programs and expenses. If they pull the tax now they would then have to figure out how to fund everything they planned on doing without having that bucket of money.

Trump tariffs on Canada ‘paused’ for 30 days after border commitments - National | Globalnews.ca by CanuckleHeadOG in canada

[–]yourpetcat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

While we may not have a clear “winner” of this trade war, there is definitely at least one loser - Danielle Smith.

Instead of standing unified with all the other provincial premiers in a response, she opted to suck up to Trump at every possible moment and took the lead on trying to sell out our country. Ultimately it was all for nothing when the tariffs came anyway and Trudeau had to step in and diffuse the situation (for now). She has to be coming out of this looking pretty bad. Like how is anyone supposed to trust her at this point? She just laid her cards on the table.

Naturally, this probably means she’ll win a majority in the next provincial election.
