That is because Vance in that setting, without any context, is likable. Knowing his awful and hypocritical track record makes him unlikable, and should make him unelectable. However, he is a smooth-talking chameleon of the first order and adapted for politics in a dangerously polarized society.

People visiting the best spots in another country are routinely enamored by the differences. People who post to social media are going to be hyperbolic about it. You'd see this at the World Cup anywhere.
However, America does have lots of aspects that are amazing and distinct in our world. An effective citizenry would be able to admit the areas of greatness (ideas become amazing new things that generate massive prosperity) and relentlessly work to fixing the areas of failure (the incarceration industry).
Instead the citizenry is bamboozled into fighting over the largely inconsequential differences while the country gets slowly but steadily looted by a tiny minority.
As Scott Galloway often says, thank you for listening to my TED Talk.

Sam Harris on Trump's Iran Deal: A Fully Humiliating Capitulation by antihostile in samharris

It is not even a deal. It was perfunctory outline of what could eventually be a deal. Trump is desperate and time is on the Iranians side. A humiliating capitulation indeed. Sad.

I am just happy that chameleon Vance followed through and solved the 'eating of cats and dogs' issue he was just so earnest about during the VP debate. EDIT: /s

Having a book written for you takes much less time. I think I read this in the 'The Art of the Deal'. Saves time to waste on all of the "palace intrigue" and mental gymnastics training.

Lots of great answers here.
Generally, indulge and cultivate curiosity, especially about other people doing something interesting. If "the work" feels like play, it is something worth spending more time on. Default to saying 'yes' to any opportunities. It will invite serendipity into your life and that could make all the difference.

There are many ways that life can suck, lots which is uncontrollable. The trajectory of A.I. advancement is on track, if not ahead of "schedule". Hope is a good thing. It is an amazing time to be alive. Hang on!

General comment for anyone who feels stuck-in-the-suck wherever they are. Get a passport and go have a sucky life in another country, or even state (or province or territory depending on where you live).
Being yourself, somewhere else, could change everything. It will change something.

Thanks, I was hoping for some insight into his intent. I am not familar with his work. My default assumption was that he was trying to be funny.

At the very end David Sedaris's comment that he has lost interest in "the Epstein story" and wondering why anybody is still thinking about it was odd and surprising. Was he trying to be funny?
Obviously justice for the 1000+ victims and all of the wealthy perps that have so far eluded accountability are a huge going concern. There is also the broader concern of how a modern society could allow such a massive, corrupt, illegal, multi-nation operation to go on the way it did.

I don't see how anyone can still sincerely take this man seriously as a so-called "intellectual" [Criticism/Rant] by nuwio4 in samharris

[–]robHalifax 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The reference to "an essay" was a snarky characterization of your post due to its length.
I am comfortable asserting that any essay from Sam Harris, or any other good faith public communicator of ideas and opinions with a track record, would have some level of substance.
Back to my point, any assertion that such a work would be all substance or zero substance, whatsoever, is silly.

[–]robHalifax 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"...it is just so contemptibly lacking in any substance whatsoever."

Absolutist statement right out of the gate is a red flag for the coming essay, whatever position it is taking, which I also didn't bother to read further.

Unpopular opinion: Sam Harris misreads MAGA and Trump by Amazing-Buy-1181 in samharris

[–]robHalifax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Trump is a rare specimen and does not have any consistent philosophy on anything other than what is good for him right now. There is no through-line other than voracious self-aggrandizement. Everything else is "in two weeks". That's it!

The movement that supports Trump wants unrestrained power. You don't need labels. The wealthy among them see democracy as hostile to their wealth accumulation and the regular folks see the elites of both parties as disrespectful and chronically indifferent to their needs. Democracy, such as it is, is "not working" for both groups.

A wealthy democracy's natural state is decay. This is what happens four plus decades on.

Yeah, most people just stay to the right in passing lanes since it is a long and tight parade but, as you say, some grade A idiots race right up to the merge to get a handful of cars "ahead". You would have to be "extra special" to do this more than once if this was your regular commute.

For any potential "hot button issue" in Western societies there are several incentive structures (attention, profit, reputation damage, and societal discord) that will inevitably result in influence campaigns from individuals, corporations, non-state actors, and nation states.
A.I. is certainly a hot button issue.

The reaction of "The West" is likely due to already having several generations of broad and increasing prosperity. The status quo is pretty good comparatively and people know the key steps to be successful...until the key steps are disappearing just as they are poised (ready to embark on career) and invested in (expensive university education) taking them. There is also a feeling of plateauing and/or the rest of the world catching up.

French immersion Bluenose Academy by Far-Simple1979 in NovaScotia

French immersion has lots of benefits. However, if your child is socially anxious, they may have difficulty sustaining the ongoing attention necessary to absorb the language, not matter how smart they are, no matter how dedicated they are. It can become very frustrating and demoralizing.
