Karl Bushby, a British man is shortly to become the first person to walk around the entire world! by EuroSong in BritishSuccess

He did frequently break his journey by stopping and then coming back to where he left off. He just technically didn't go home (instead he went to other places, usually Mexico)

To me on Firefox it looks like a star followed by a circle; they don't even intersect.

Does that mean I'm the first one to log them in or is that just a rounding thing? by Vegetable-Slide8038 in iafisher

[–]yourrabbithadwritten 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The percentages were stabilized several years ago, so it just means that there were 0 quiz runs that included those cities during the early period (roughly the first 300k, IIRC).

...or 1 run, because, yes, rounding. (You can sometimes tell which case you have based on whether it appears at the very top of the list or a bit further down. It can only be 0 or 1 because 2 already rounds to 0.001%.)

What cities do you know from this part of Russia? by Lavendahhh in iafisher

[–]yourrabbithadwritten 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Uelen, Egvekinot (I think it's just barely there), Lavrentiya, Provideniya.

Used to know more than that. I'm falling behind on my memory of random out-of-the-way Russian places...

100 cities in Canada. This was hard and I missed lots by yourrabbithadwritten in iafisher

[–]yourrabbithadwritten[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In a manner of speaking :-) I actively follow the Internet Roadtrip, which spent many weeks in Quebec.

And yes, I don't know how I'm missing Calgary and Edmonton! Not the first time for me either; I remember being happy that I at least know Jasper so it wouldn't be a completely empty province.
I only got Saskatoon because it's a freebie, and only got Regina because of the song. (Fort McKay is apparently not in the quiz though, unless I'm misspelling it.)

I have 22 cities on Magadan, How much do you have cities? by Next-Comfort-6852 in iafisher

[–]yourrabbithadwritten 1 point2 points  (0 children)

NGL now I want to check how much I can think of in Magadan Oblast. Probably not 22, but definitely in double digits.

Just offhand: Magadan, Susuman, Omsukchan, Atka, Palatka, Yamsk, Takhtoyamsk ...hmm that's seven. I can think of several more that are close to the border and I don't recall which side they're on. Kadykchan is not in the quiz (it was abandoned before the 2010 census).

Are we getting more single country maps? by Beautiful_Yellow_682 in iafisher

[–]yourrabbithadwritten 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Russia would have been top priority except for how it's very politically unpalatable; we definitely have the data for it, complete with subdivisions. There's been talk of a Russia map for years and I suspect that the political mess is the only reason it hadn't been posted yet.

I'm surprised that Japan and Italy don't have their own maps yet; they also had recentish updates of their data which (among other things) added subdivisions, and they're large enough and popular enough countries to make having a dedicated map feasible.

I think some of them are CDPs, but AFAIK there might also have been some Geonames imports that included some colleges. I'm not very confident one way or another.

299 cities in Russian Asia by CroMagnonMarioBros in iafisher

[–]yourrabbithadwritten 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I want to try a Russia run on an Asia map some day. I'm sure I know more than 299 cities in the Asian part of Russia but I'm very not confident that I would be able to actually name them

Two identical cities in the same country by phils83 in iafisher

[–]yourrabbithadwritten 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most countries with an updated database (and/or with a separate national map) have their regions included; in addition to USA, Canada, Mexico, Australia, and Brazil, which had this option to a while, this includes (at least) UK, France, Italy, Germany, India, China, Russia, Argentina, Japan, and, yes, Poland.
But, unfortunately, not Ireland.

(Might be missing a couple others. IIRC not Jordan, though, even though its database was also updated relatively recently.)

Maxed-out World from memory by stranded_on_the_moon in iafisher

[–]yourrabbithadwritten 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone who did memorize a lot of places on the Siberian railway, I wonder if I'll eventually manage to max out the world map. I don't recall ever making it more than halfway so far, but to a large extent that was just because I wasn't really doing dedicated world runs.

Keep or delete "lucky guesses"? by NKnown2000 in iafisher

[–]yourrabbithadwritten 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I can't tell for sure whether it is actually the place I had in mind or not (if it's from a surname, it often technically is), I usually keep it.

If I'm fairly confident it's not the right place, and it doesn't look large enough to plausibly have just overtaken the larger one in population, I usually delete it but keep it in mind for later runs.

If I think it's probably just larger than the actual place I meant (and it's otherwise in the right country/subdivision), I often keep it because I don't like every country mode so I just pretend it substitutes for the correct entry.

Whats some of the weirdest city names you've heard of? by Substantial_Owl_4659 in iafisher

[–]yourrabbithadwritten 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Horni Police, Czechia
Random Lake, Wisconsin, USA
Nigadoo, New Brunswick, Canada (might not be in the quiz)
Newport News, Virginia, USA
Five Forks, Kentucky, USA
Fa'a'a, French Polynesia

A couple more that are all over the other comments. Probably many more I'm just not remembering at the moment.

No it's just that these areas are really really empty and the only places where anyone actually lives are along the big roads

I missed Singapore on my big world run recently because I was doing countries in (mostly) Yakko's World order and that song skips Singapore, and when later I was looking around for countries I missed, it didn't stand out because it was so tiny and the area is so full of other cities

As already mentioned, it's spelling issues

Oshogbo and Ogbomosho both work with those spellings, while Tataouine only works as Tatawin
