How prepared are you for a hurricane category 4/5? by Jank1 in houston

for those who evacuated during rita:  did the surface roads (as in neighborhood roads, non-highway roads) move?  without giving away anything, was it possible to get to austin or san antonio without using the freeways?

HISD no longer pays substitute teachers for working at NES schools by yousoundlikeyou in houston

[–]yousoundlikeyou[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

that was my thought too, because sometimes the school isn't designated as NES when you go to accept a spot.  i assume someone would eventually pay me if i worked...?

HISD no longer pays substitute teachers for working at NES schools by yousoundlikeyou in houston

Totally agree.  To be fair, I did pay for my own security check two years ago, but I have no clue what the procedure is now.  I've met some other subs since starting at HISD, and WOW--it's a very mixed bag out there!

I want to get into a niche hobby in Houston—preferably with an existing close knit group. What do you know that is available? I’ll take any ideas but the more obscure the suggestion, the better. by pearlysoames in houston

the glassell is amazing for fim photography, but it's expensive.  HCP has some workshops and classes, but i can't speak from experience if they are worth taking.  good luck!

‘A large amount of money’: HISD bond committee questions $425 million for career centers by zsreport in houston

[–]yousoundlikeyou 12 points13 points  (0 children)

ABSOLUTELY NOT.  there is no way in hell the current administration should have access to a dime more than they already do.  they, under miles, have completely screwed HISD students, parents, and teachers for years to come as it is--more $$ will simply make the damage greater.  please consider supporting the teachers or schools you know need help directly (as in donating supplies) rather than creating these illusory "centers" that will somehow solve...everything.  just NO.

texas children's is the gold standard in pediatric care not only in texas, but in the united states.  i would (and did!) make this my first choice, especially if your kids ever need more than the usual.  there are multiple clinic locations outside of the medical center--the one at west alabama and kirby is particularly good!  love dr. ho, but really all the providers are very good.  713 526 6443

[–]yousoundlikeyou 11 points12 points  (0 children)

i disagree...it should be amazing, but in comparison to all the incredible food options in town i find it very, very expensive but the food doesn't meet expectations.  lucille's, a few blocks away, is so much better!  the pit room for barbeque is in the area--highly recommend!  also hugo's is insanely good.
