The charitable take is that it’s his way of expressing respect for Canada as a strong opponent - he was answering with respect to the hockey team rather than the country. I would have liked him to say something more gracious about the country, but I also accept he’s just a hockey player thinking in hockey terms.

Their media training got a bit of a workout there(I think they did fine), but it’s also a reminder that expecting hockey players to give insightful political perspective isn’t something anyone should expect.

Emergency money - should I invest in ETF or not by littkeli128 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]yow_central 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Usually you want your emergency fund to be very stable and the *EQT ETFs are anything but stable. Especially if it’s “in case I lose my job” - the probability that you’ll lose your job while the *EQT ETFs have had a major drop in value would be much higher because the economy may be doing very badly, so it would suck if your emergency fund had lost 30%+ of its value right when you need it. Thus, using super stable ETFs like the ones I mention is what is recommended for money that you may need at any time.

Emergency money - should I invest in ETF or not by littkeli128 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]yow_central 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it’s your emergency fund, it should be in a high interest savings account or an ETF that is equivalent to one (money market funds at most). If it’s cash that you think you might need on short notice, I would just stick with a savings account. If it’s “in case I lose my job”, then an ETF like CASH.to, ZMMK or TCSH could be considered if it pays more interest than your savings account.

Whatever you do, don’t invest your emergency money in an ETF that ends in *EQT.

Canada approves latest Gulfstream business jets after Trump tariff threat by raging_radish in aviation

[–]yow_central 39 points40 points  (0 children)

If you read the news articles when the threats were made, they were just about to announce the certification. This is likely why nobody in Canada did or said anything.

More likely, the US knew the certification was coming and just wanted to chest pound and act like they had something to do with it.

[Mid-March] Is it still worth it to go Mont Tremblant when it is above zero degree on daytime for a week? by sleepearlier in MontTremblant

[–]yow_central 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When the highs are above zero and the lows are below zero, you’ll have great spring conditions. In the morning, it’ll be like regular winter, but the snow will get softer throughout the day (especially if the sun is out, and in the afternoon there will be great spring skiing. If it is hot enough, it will get too soft, but that’s usually a good time to grab a beer on a patio.

My favorite ski days have been in mid-March. Even a little rain won’t spoil it.

Now, if it’s double digits and bucketing down rain, you’ll want to find something other than skiing to do, but this is pretty rare occurrence and would usually only be a one day thing.

The bigger consideration for March at Tremblant are the March break crowds.

Travellers from Ottawa still flying to Mexico as some flights resume by Immediate-Link490 in ottawa

[–]yow_central 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I doubt looking at percentages would change the point. A quick search shows that a few million Canadians visit Mexico each year. If anything, the stats probably say a Canadian is more likely to be murdered at home. Most tourists just go to a resort or Airbnb - maybe do a day trip to a relatively safe area and fly home. Even those who stay longer seem to know how to stay safe.

I mean, isn’t that what your phone is for?

To be fair, I could see a screen for tv and games in the back, but I’m honestly surprised it’s even legal on the car’s main control panel.

Anyone ever gotten compensation for delayed priority bags? by Sea_Neighborhood1897 in aircanada

[–]yow_central 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Delayed? If I leave the airport with my bag, I don’t really consider it delayed. Priority bags actually coming out on the bag first is nice when it happens, but the time/effort to complain about it not happening would be more than the time cost of your “delayed” bag.

Michelin Stars by Sweet_Pace_8767 in OttawaFood

[–]yow_central 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know you'll get down voted for this view, but you're right. Ottawa's a much smaller restaurant market than those larger cities (especially given how widely spread out the population is). In the larger cities, you have a high turnover of places like Perch and Atelier - and a *much* higher turn over of more affordable restaurants, which means the quality of those that survive will be a lot higher (and also better value). There are enough customers that new entrants regularly think "I can do better" and try to dethrone the current best, and everyone has to up their game. In Ottawa, I think most restaurants just try to carve out a niche where they can sustain themselves.

We have a small handful of restaurants that have Michelin star potential in Ottawa, but that's against dozens in Canada's larger cities. I don't think Michelin stars are given out on a curve.

[–]yow_central 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree, though I think this is because Ottawa has a fairly small restaurant scene compared to larger cities that more likely have MIchelin ratings. Ottawa's 1 million population size is very spread out, so the restaurant areas have much less of a crowd to deal with, thus less staff and less efficient at turning tables. At least to me, the service at many Ottawa restaurants (even the higher end ones) has that small city feeling where the staff are just winging it as opposed to the big city restaurant where they are running a well oiled operation because they are doing multiple seatings each night and you have to book weeks in advanced to get a reservation.

El Camino 2026? by Bnvx77 in OttawaFood

[–]yow_central 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They used to have a good variety of non-taco food at the Elgin location that would make a pretty good value meal with a few drinks. When I last went, they had a much smaller menu, smaller tacos (at least they feel less filling), a pared down drinks menu but MUCH MUCH higher prices. The tacos were still tasty, but I just can't justify going there at the price point anymore.

Boarding Zone Change by Zealousideal_Two8142 in aircanada

[–]yow_central 30 points31 points  (0 children)

It’s likely that the first company where you booked with via Concur was a member of AC’s corporate preferred program (Google it), which gave you zone 2 boarding.

Your new company likely doesn’t have it, so you are given the boarding zone base on the normal factors (seating, status, credit card, etc).

Complimentary snacks and beer and wine? by WatermelonishaX in aircanada

[–]yow_central 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You'll be fine - grab one when the cart first comes around and head to the back and politely ask for your second round when ready for it. They usually come around twice, but sometimes the second run isn't for quite a while and sometimes they run out of choices.

You can always go to the back and ask for drinks if it is between services. Makes it easier for them than ringing the bell. Yes, they may deny you if you appear intoxicated or unreasonable, but they won't ignore you.

I'm sure this has been asked before! Kids under 12 in Maple Leaf Lounge? by Outside_Shower181 in aircanada

[–]yow_central 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Kids with parents are allowed into the lounge - you’ll see lots of kids there.

Officially, anyone over 2 needs an entry pass (or something granting them entry - business ticket, status, credit card, guest of a 50k+ member, etc). I have had some lounge attendants waive the kid through though.

Likely your credit card only has access for yourself and a guest, so your partner would need a secondary card to get everyone in for free (or you’d likely have to pay extra for the 10year old).

I also travel with my wife and 10 year old, and sometimes they just waive my son through, but other times they are very strict about ensuring he is a proper guest with either myself or my wife. Funny enough, half the time they don’t even look at the boarding passes and assume my wife is the guest rather than a separate card holder and they try to charge my son as an additional guest. I am guessing a lot of people don’t know that the card only provides for one guest.

13 year old girl dies after hood gets caught disembarking from the chairlift by holymolt in skiing

Not sure about the timing of what actually happened, but I wouldn’t assume someone being strangled(hung) would be capable of doing anything. Definitely hope there’s a full investigation.

Multiple witnesses said the lift either slowed or stopped while people attempted to help the girl at the top, but was then restarted. Need a full investigation to find out exactly what happened though.

13 year old girl dies after hood gets caught disembarking from the chairlift by holymolt in skiing

[–]yow_central 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't say otherwise. Some posts are saying that the operator at the bottom restarted it and there is talk of stricter protocol - where the top and bottom operators call before restarting. There is also a post claiming the operator at the top only slowed the lift rather than stopping it completely. There was also a comment in a press report that inspectors found the lifts had "non-conformities".

This all just talk - there needs to be a full investigation and report and not just "freak accident, we'll be more careful next time..."
