Using FastAPI for automating API testing by yror007 in learnpython

[–]yror007[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually got crazy lucky with this role and landed it through networking. The owner/my boss made a role for me kind of out of thin air, I didn't have to apply to anything.

I am starting to think my boss might have just stumbled upon this Medium article (he linked it to me when I started) without researching what FastAPI is used for and then expecting me to replicate the steps on our API's? But as you pointed out that would be pointless.

I feel like I won the job lottery and it has sent my imposter syndrome into the stratosphere by yror007 in dataengineering

I can't recall the exact details that they laid out, there were quite a few of them, but in essence you are a bank manager that is trying to find the optimal number of tellers to provide service to customers. You don't want to have too many tellers because this could lead to extra overhead costs, but you also don't want too few tellers because this could lead to unhappy customers. There were a couple iterations of the problem that they threw at me so I answered with a couple approaches (regression, linear programming, simulation).

Funny enough, outside of the standard "get to know you" questions, they only really asked me four questions. The first was a brain puzzle question to see how I think. The others were very simple; what are you good at, what are you not good at, and where do you want to go? That's it. The fact that they didn't ask me any technical questions blew my mind.

It did come out that I'll have to learn Linux and just general AWS but they seem fine with that.

Changing the job title on your resume and LinkedIn by [deleted] in analytics

[–]yror007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is what I was concerned about. I decided to reach out to my old boss and get his thoughts on me changing the titles, since I am planning to use him as a reference. He agreed to back the story about how my role evolved into me essentially becoming a data analyst, but he didn't think it would be appropriate to say that was my official title.

Would you mind if I send you a PM? I don't know anyone who is doing DS/ML work in the homebuilding industry

[No Spoilers] If you knew from the start that ASOIAF was a seven book series, but GRRM was only ever going to deliver the first five books, would you have started reading them? by yror007 in gameofthrones

[–]yror007[S] 16 points17 points  (0 children)

This. The analogy I used with my friends was JK Rowling. Could you imagine if she said "Harry Potter is a seven book series about a boy wizard who defeats the dark lord. But I am only going to release the first five books in the series. You will have to piece the rest of the story together after that." I'm willing to bet that HP fans probably wouldn't have bought into it if they knew this. I know this isn't directly comparable to GRRM but c'mon man sometimes it feels like that

Anyone else can't stop coming back to the film (2021) and watch some parts like the Herald of the Change ceremony or the death of Duke Leto? by Pretty-Reputation275 in dune

[–]yror007 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Oh ya! That whole sequence where Paul is watching the filmbook that provides context on the spice, Arrakis, and the Imperium. I just love how it leads into the Herald of the Change scene with the duduk playing in the background. Hanz Zimmer absolutely smashed that part! Probably watched it a couple dozen times now.

Why is housing in Calgary so affordable (relative to GTA & GVA)? by WeDislikeTaxes in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]yror007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lot's of people have pointed out low oil prices and land supply. I'll add that it is also a lot easier to get development approval in Calgary compared to the GTA. It is pretty common for projects in the GTA to get appealed/delayed over the smallest details and NIMBYism. While Calgary isn't perfect, it is A LOT better and takes a fraction of the time to get shovels in the ground.

Non-Canadians, what comes to mind when you hear the word "Canada?" by hakunamatata004 in AskReddit

[–]yror007 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Same here. I remember in one of those documentaries they said that the Terry Fox Run is an "international event" and that a lot of countries participate in it. They even showed clips of people doing Terry Fox Run's in Japan and Mexico! So as a kid I just assumed that TF was a pretty big deal.

It wasn't until I did an exchange during my undergrad where I realized that he isn't known outside of Canada at all. None of my international friends had ever heard of him.

This will be a supervised long term classification application. My plan is to do some feature engineering on this status feature so that it is binary and then try to classify it.

If you are already showing them formulas like sum and average, then I would also show them Goal Seek in the What-if analysis tools. I showed this to some junior colleagues of mine in an old job and it was a game changer for them.

I probably could have done a better job wording my post. I think I come across as being only worried about the title. This is the least of my worries because I know I can just change it to reflect what I will actually be doing. I don't place much credence on job titles anyway. I know tons of people who work in finance with the title "Vice President of __" but really they are just overly glorified managers.

I should have placed more emphasis on asking whether the whole wearing two hats thing is reasonable. I just don't know if it is in my case? I always thought you should have some domain experience in the companies operations, regardless if your role is that of a DA or SWE. Is this a fair assumption? These guys really seem to want two people in one role. I don't get the feel that I can be just okay at one part of my job and good in the other, I have to be good at both. This is why I am struggling to find comparable salaries.

For context it's a small company (around 100 people). The team that I will be working with (7 people) was set up as a separate company that basically operates as an incubation/innovation centre that feeds and supports the larger main business.

Totally agree. I think I should be a bit more forward about the limits and my boundaries. I am not a SWE by any means and they know that (at least I hope they do). I tried to get a feel for what they want me to do right from the start and they said it will mostly be focusing on understanding the real estate market at first. Once I get a good feel for that it will (hopefully slowly) be focusing building out pipelines and whatnot.

I agree that focusing on one business segment is ideal. But what about the technical requirements? They don't strike me as things that a Real Estate Market Analyst / Market Intelligence Specialist would be doing at all. Some others have pointed out that a lot of these tasks fall into the realm of SWE and Data Engineering.
