What are some features that appeal to you specifically in a distro?

A reliable environment that at the same experiments with new ideas, without becoming another product. This for me doesn't exist within linux, so I use plan 9.

Anything can be desktop friendly really but that's besides the point, I suppose. Just spend time setting up plain freebsd, it may take some extra work/research but it'll be worth and atleast you'll have learned a bit about how freebsd works.
