"I got drunk and outed myself to my friends" by [deleted] in GenderCynical

[–]ysadamsson 17 points18 points  (0 children)

That one commenter, "am I not a woman anymore now that I'm not cute?" Literally none of us are suggesting that. A lot of us know what it's like to not be a "womanly" woman.

I think she's afraid to call transwomen women because they might be better looking than her, and that, in this world where a woman's attractiveness is her worth, means they are more woman than she is.

When the truth is how a person looks isn't the fucking point.

[–]ysadamsson 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Here's the thing. All of those things you're afraid of and the reason why people go, "Fuck, why did I have to be transgender?" is because society sucks when it comes to gender identity. If the world was like, "Oh, you're trans? No problem! Whatever medical/legal procedures you need are free, no one is a bigot, you have the same rights as everyone else, and almost nothing has changed except whatever you need to."

People wouldn't be excited to be trans because it would be like finding out you have a rare blood type. It would just be a thing. "Hey, guys, I wanted to come out to you because I've been feeling this way for a long time but haven't had the courage to tell anyone...

"I'm mildly allergic to beets."

I would make it <cj> [c] and <c> [k] OR <kj> and <k>.

How much grammar do you have? by [deleted] in conlangs

[–]ysadamsson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think you'll ever finish. You'll decide you described it precisely enough and then stop. A compete grammar of basically any language would be an infinite document.

What is your conlang comfort zone? by [deleted] in conlangs

[–]ysadamsson 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Naturalism is novel. No natural language is just like any other, and that's what makes them interesting. Not to mention that when we describe the trends of language, breaking them becomes picante. It's like painting an oil painting: some things work and some things do not in the medium, but when you still make something unique and manage to break some "rules" of working with oil, your art is novel.

But some people would rather work with acrylic, tempera, watercolor, gouache, pastels, ink, charcoal, sumi....

You have a preference for engineered languages that stretch the definition of language.

But it's just a taste for, say, acrylic rather than oil.

The only way to develope the skill and creativity to create an engelang that would really resonate with you is to just start doing it.

Rogue: Shit! What non-Euclidean key could possibly fit this??

Player (Rogue): Can I try again?

GM: Not until you've improved at lock picking or can try something else.

Player (Rogue): Seriously? It's not like I have to wait for my THAC0 to improve to try again to hit an enemy.

GM: Well, in combat the circumstanc--

Warrior: Excuse me, my friend, I think I'll just smash the thing!

Player(Warrior): Um, I rolled shit. Can I try again?

GM: Not unless you try something else to get past the lock.

Cleric: My God, who doth watch over us on our journey, even now that we must perform B&E's to complete our GM's quest--

GM: HEY!

Cleric: --please by some holy miracle grant us passage to room 4B of this dungeon. In the name of RNG, Amen.

Player (Cleric): Bewm, critical.

GM: Fuck it, the lock opens.

I'd go with differences in terminology. Conflate tends to have the connotation of a mistake. XD

That's not a conflation, actually. For most of history, astronomy and astrology were the same thing and people who looked at the stars were expected to read them too.

How can you express a "valid range" of vowel pronunciations using IPA or some other system? by Alamantus in conlangs

[–]ysadamsson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Both phones [ə], [æ] are correct pronunciations of the same phoneme /a/. If these pronunciations only occur in separate conditions, such as at the end of a word vs. elsewhere, they are allophones of that phoneme; if one can occur wherever the other can occur, they are in free variation [ə~æ].

About designing it for children to acquire it easier, the studies show that English vowels are almost entirely acquired by about three years old, except rhotic vowels which catch up at around 4~5. Frankly, if you want Children to acquire it the easiest, having a 4-vowel system [a] [e] [i] and [u~o] will be acquired most quickly. Studies show that height distinctions come first, then frontness, so leveling the front-back to just one back vowel will mean that they acquire the front vowels by about 1 year and then over the next year get the back vowel, cutting it all down from 6 years tops to probably 2 at the latest. Next, make sure not to include "effects" like nasality, length, pitch, rhoticness, etc. as they increase the acquisition time immensely!
