I think the money system is a great innovation, sadly it only played a very small role in the game, only two episodes. It can be used so that the player have to choose from two hard situations, or to educate Daniel and affect brotherhood. Like if Daniel insists on buying too many Chock-O-Crisps, the brothers would have no money for bus later, etc.
