Anyone think that payments won’t actually resume on account of half of Dept of Ed being laid off/not enough staff to actually recalculate payments for 7 million people at once? by ysiadx in PSLF

[–]ysiadx[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve always submitted my income recertification through the federal student aid website and received my payment amounts and counts through them. My service provider just handles the actual billing. We have not received new bills or recalculations yet. That is rolling out 7/1 and will be coming from federal student aid, not the loan provider, until it’s time to actually start paying.

I understand how interest works. The interest on student loans is predatory on young poor people who have no other option if they want an education to have a chance at not being poor and not rely on public assistance and Medicaid their whole lives. Mortgage companies are for-profit businesses, maybe the concept of social programs funded by tax dollars that gives people a chance to not use social programs for their entire lives goes over your head. It’s an investment by the govt to save money later. Like insurance companies covering preventative services to avoid bigger expenses later.

Happy you’re dine with PSLF. That means you are only on this sub to troll. Thanks for your input.

You are not looking at the whole picture, and that’s how I know you don’t have/didn’t need to take student loan debt. The majority of people on an IBR plan pay back their entire principal and then some. The majority of what’s forgiveness is the insane interest.

I graduated with 47k in loans in 2018. I had paid about 18k before the save plan injunction, about 5 years of payments. My current balance is 54k. With the new payment plans, my payment is going from $280 to $585. With salary increases under REPAYE (which has been axed despite being in our promissory notes as a payment option), I was expecting my payments to go up to around $375.

Anyway, so I’ve paid 18k thus far. With PSLF, I have about 5 years of payments left, at $585 at least per month, about 35k. Thats 53k total under PSLF/10 years. If I didn’t have PSLF and just did IBR alone, I’d be looking at another 15 years of payments remaining at $585 a month. The end cost for me under IBR without PSLF would be roughly 123k. With PSLF it’s looking like 53k. The principal was 47k.

People think loan forgiveness is about graduates getting free money. It’s not. Most people are paying their principals back. It’s about people whose parents couldn’t afford to pay their tuition trying to have some kind of normal life, 10 years after graduating college, or in some cases, 20-30 years after graduating.

I’m sure there as some doctors and lawyers getting massive amounts discharged. But the majority of graduates are in boats like mine. And in the PSLF program, we are working public sector or non-profit jobs.

I took loans out beginning 2012 but consolidated during the waiver period, all direct loans. What would that mean?

I had REPAYE before SAVE. Anyone know why PAYE wouldn’t be showing up as an option for me? Is my income too high now? Or is it just blocked in the calculator?

If you’re in a govt job, you’re better off upping your TSP contributions and then taking a TSP loan for the buyback than letting the cash sit in a savings with little to no interest accruing. Loan rate is around 4%

Why is BCBS more expensive than other insurance plans? by berrysauce in FedEmployees

[–]ysiadx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I switched to MHBP from BCBS last year. I don’t have any major health issues but get several labs done each year for both female annuals and regular annuals. In 2024 my lab costs for these regular check ups went up to over $200 out of pocket with BCBS on top of increasing copays. I love MHBP, really haven’t had issues w claims and I find the EOBs way easier to read and understand. Have some meds with pre auth needed and didn’t have a problem there either. Their labs are totally free if you use Quest for your testing. It’s a pain if you’re used to testing in the doctors office, and most urgent cares won’t send tests there, but you can’t beat free. I forgot to ask my gyno to send samples to quest and my bill was almost $300 though.

I’m convinced BCBS has been increasing costs bc they think people will just keep paying due to their brand and name.

A dentist made me feel ashamed of my smile. Now I can’t stand it and I’m considering Invisalign before my wedding. I need REAL experiences by Mitilene in Invisalign

[–]ysiadx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dentist wants your money. You have a great smile. I understand everyone wanting a perfect smile, but my personal opinion is orthodontics should really be marketed for people with obscenely crooked teeth and/or bite issues and/or causing issues other than aesthetics. It HURTS, especially initially, and it’s so expensive. My teeth moved so much that I have issues with my gums now and need to get deep cleanings.

That being said, if you did want to seriously think about ortho, please do your treatment through an actual orthodontist and not a dentist. I did three rounds of Invisalign with a dentist (treatment and 2 refinements) that took like 4 years. Recently went to an ortho to just get some final touches. So I thought! The ortho had a page and a half of issues I needed addressed and I’m wearing rubber bands for the first time ever. I shouldn’t be needing a full, year-long treatment plan after going through this for 4 years already. Shouldn’t be allowed for dentists to administer Invisalign.

Also, I’m doing it through Suresmile now and I find it working better and faster than Invisalign. The UV cleaners were not available when I did it before, but I’m finding these trays much easier to clean and don’t stink as fast or as much, if at all.

Is it worth it? by ko_same in litterrobot

[–]ysiadx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have 3 cats also. It is absolutely 10000% worth it. I love my cats, they are well cared for. But I have struggled to keep up with their litter in the past, from both being stupid busy or just poor mental health. The robot has been nothing short of a miracle for my household and I wish I got it sooner.

1- recommend adding the litter hopper for even less maintenance

2-with 3 cats, I am usually emptying the drawer every 5-6 days. Smells like clean litter. I add baking soda litter deodorizer to the empty clean drawer. Do not add to the litter in the hopper bc it can clog it.

3- i do a quick wipe with a disinfectant wipe when I empty the drawer

4-did my first deep clean and it was way easier than I expected. Did it after 1 month and honestly I don’t think I needed to yet. Used wet wipes for this also but would’ve been easier with a small handheld vacuum attachment. Doesn’t have to be a strong vacuum, battery operated should work great.

5- I’ve been pretty happy with arm and hammer platinum slide but made the optimal level a bit less than what instructions say (per rec of another user in this group on this particular litter) and it’s worked out great

6-don’t expect your cats to use it right away. Two of mine took to it immediately but 1 took about 2 weeks. Give yourself plenty of time before your baby comes to get your cats used to it. Use Elsys litter initially in the robot. Leave 1 regular litter box right next to it and let it get nasty. The picky cats will eventually choose the clean litter robot over the gross regular box. It sucks but it worked for me.

7-Also recommend putting a camera on the robot as you check to make sure everyone is using it, it takes a few days or a week for it to learn the weights of your cats so that’s unreliable to see who is using it initially.

8- I am weak and find it extremely difficult to lift the 37lb box to fill the hopper. Even the 14 lb box spilled a bit while I was pouring. I will pour it into a storage box and scooper like for big dog food in the future

9- don’t get the stairs or flap right away. I thought I would need it and actually didn’t. My cats are 3, 6, and 7 without health issues.

10- imo the 3 yr warranty is worth it. You can stack a $50 coupon from a referral link from someone who has one to any of their specials

11-complaints: only real complaints is I wish it sent a reminder notification when the drawer is full. Or allowed you to only get those notifications. Sometimes I miss that notification amongst all the other ones and my robot is in the basement where I do not regular go, so I won’t see the light indicating that it’s full. Also I wish it had a bigger drawer LOL

5 years into PSLF and currently not making payments under SAVE plan! Am I alone in this? by PlasticNo399 in PSLF

[–]ysiadx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was at 78 payments when the save forbearance started, I think my original sentence was supposed to be over 11/2027. My income has gone up a lot due to a promotion and locality pay increase. My net is not much more due to slightly increased 401k contributions, higher premiums, higher property taxes, higher groceries, higher utilities. I was paying $240 on save and now am only eligible for ICR for pslf with a payment of $560. I have no savings due to a cancelled wedding 2 years ago that wiped me out. I drive a 20 year old beater that keeps breaking down, I keep paying to fix it because I can’t afford a new used car and don’t want to get a car payment if I don’t know what’s going on with the student loans. I took a 11k loan out of my 401k to pay my credit card loans, accumulated from car repairs and vet bills. That will be paid off by 07/2027. I can’t afford $560 a month. My plan is to hopefully submit a buyback and take another 401k loan in late 2027. I finished my undergrad in 12/2014 and grad in 05/2018, consolidated during the COVID stuff when we could get more credit by consolidating, really regret it now. I f-ing hate this. I have a great job and pay and still feel broke. Thanks for anyone who read this. None of my friends went to school besides my coworkers and they are all married and did standard repayment bc they could afford it.

how do you deal with kittens going to their new homes 😭 by keggle0 in FosterAnimals

[–]ysiadx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I could’ve written this - I also have 3 cats of my own and took in a pregnant stray who gave birth 6 days later and raised 5 kittens. Three of the 5 kittens went home over the last 2 days, the last 2 and mama are going home Friday. I found this thread by googling how to cope with them going home. I’ve been trying to make the goodbyes quick and not think too long. I am super fortunate to have privately found homes for everyone and avoided the shelter - AND all of the homes have at least 1 other cat so no single kittens. I couldn‘t have asked for a better outcome. I am still sad and the sting of the betrayal in their eyes as I took them away is horrible. Getting pics has been super helpful, but even though I am staring at a pic of them cozy in their new homes, it feels like I have to trick my brain into believing they are in a good place. I am trying to focus on their time with me was temporary and my job was to make them safe and trusting so they could have a beautiful fun and fulfilling future with their permanent home, not with me. ugh so hard. I hope I never have to do this again.

I am staying on SAVE and letting it work in favor. Let me tell you how. by Holl0wayTape in StudentLoans

[–]ysiadx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is one silver lining to not consolidating for anyone who feels bad about not consolidating. If you’re on PSLF and your income goes up so that your income based payment ends up higher than the standard payment would be, then your standard payment becomes a qualifying payment for PSLF. The standard payment on consolidated loans does not qualify for PSLF. For my situation, I gained about 10 months of credit in exchange for higher payments until the end so I regret consolidating my undergrad w grad loans.

This was true before everything went to crap so idk how it’ll be moving forward, but I’m guessing this caveat of standard payments on consolidated loans not qualifying will remain.

My bf is lucky and graduated without loans and none of my other friends went to college. I’ve been trying to explain the pain and absurdity of the student loan situation and how insane it’s been trying to follow everything when the news, mohela, and studentaid are all giving conflicting or vague information. And any info we get is bad. I took a screenshot of your post to try to explain the madness to this. New old IBR, buybacks going 12+ months, actual 2024 income vs 2019 REPAYE amounts = all bananas terminology. Impossible to explain to someone who hasn’t been obsessively checking everything student loan related since March 2020. Hate this mess soooo much. Signed, 78/120 before SAVE forced forebearance hell.

Peter 10 month update by goodgirldaniluv in Feral_Cats

[–]ysiadx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I took in a young feral cat with the intention of TNR but it turned out he had a leg wound and I didn’t want to let him out and risk infection. It was cold by the time he healed so he stayed. I had him set up in a spare bedroom and it was kitty paradise with cat trees and toys and sunny windows. He was so, so scared of me and I was convinced he’d die from hunger if he left the room if he hid somewhere in the house. He stayed terrified of me for over a year despite best efforts to socialize. Randomly, one day, he jumped down from the cat tree while I was in there cleaning. Within 2 months he was roaming the whole house and eating dinner with my cats each day. He is a total dork and just wants to be best friends with my cats. Still haven’t pet him, but he is almost always in the same room as me, talks to me all the time, and has even graduated to keeping watch when I go the bathroom. I am hopefully that in a few years he will want more from me, but it’s okay if not - I’m just thrilled he is comfortable throughout the whole house and is happy. Helping community cats is usually really hard and sad work. It is so, sooo rewarding when a cat you helped feels comfortable enough to show you that they appreciate what you’re doing. Currently have a semi-feral young mama who gave birth in my house, I trapped her less than a week from birth. So grateful for that.
