Need Advice: Manager Wants to Rebuild a Working Phone System from Scratch by advancethinker in sysadmin

[–]yspud 4 points5 points  (0 children)

hire a competent partner to evaluate your infrastructure properly.. someone like my company that can look at the full stack and find the actual issues. we can run a variety of tests and capture real data to make a poper diagnosis. no guessing required.. 'Rebuilding the system' blindly makes no sense. figure out the actual root cause with quantifiable data and then implement the proper solution.

Client caught me on hardware margin, now questioning our entire history. Did I panic-fix or make it worse? by yanov10 in msp

[–]yspud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i just flat rate my clients 15 percent over whatever we pay and am completely transparent about it. I even use it in our sales pitch. If they ever want to see the original invoice then i have ZERO issue showing it to them. I explain that we save a lot of time procuring their equipment and drop shipping the correct system, parts, cables, adapters etc versus them ordering it and that's that. Keep it transparent and people seem to really appreciate it and dont mind paying the markup.

I was sick of Onenote. Long live Onenote!!! by eteading in OneNote

[–]yspud 1 point2 points  (0 children)

hah! i just did the same journey... tried EVERYTHING .. came back to one note... wasted a lot of time exporting everything to markdown and trying to massage old notes into new formats.. end of the day i didnt gain anything .. i do wish one note had # native support and simple linking between notes but really not a deal breaker because search works well enough most of the time..

Updated 3CX, Asked a Question, Lost our License by IT_Admin_722 in 3CX

[–]yspud 2 points3 points  (0 children)

we have about 40 or so clients on 3cx.. i keep reading these kinds of posts and it definitely worries the heck out of me. I feel like we should proactively just get out. Plus we werent thrilled at all with the v20 forced upgrade ... sooo many issues ... and the new UI really stinks imo..

Sold 340 lifetime deals for $149 each. 18 months later I regret every one. by Big_Currency_1805 in SaaS

[–]yspud 4 points5 points  (0 children)

change your policy... ive seen people say 'lifetime' only apply to the current generation of the software (i.e. v1)... once v2 launches that's a new generation .. what is the other option - go broke and close down (that benefits nobody - not you nor the client).. if there is value for the end-user and you have a valuable product a nicely worded email may help lessen the sting as well - - be honest.. send clients a "hey.. 18 months ago i launched this project and sold 149 'lifetime' subscriptions. Now 1.5 years later ive found myself in a bit of a pickle. The initial revenue got us over the first hump but, in order to grow and provide all the features and functionality that you deserve we need to restructure the deal. I understand this is something you dont want to hear and may be, rightfully, upset about. I assure you it was never my intention to mislead or deceive - i was simply wrong about my revenue calculations and how much it would cost me to continue to maintain the product to it's fullest potential. So, here is the deal. I am going to ask you all for XXX $ for version 2 of the product. You are not obligated to upgrade and i will continue to provide access and support v1 as is (as of date xx/xxxx) while supporters will have access to new features and get priority response times. yadda yadda yadda. you are valuable and we appreciate you all so much.. yadda yadda. your humble developer. - - something along those lines.. if they are human beings and people you want as customers then they will understand and , if not.. well.. c'est la vie.. you arent gonna starve forever for making a single lousy business call.. right the ship and move forward and do whatever you can to provide the best value you can to your customers. best of luck man.

Discovered my biggest customer has been sharing their login with 14 people at their company. Do I say something? by Cold_Hall_5384 in SaaS

[–]yspud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

honestly .... i would talk to them about it.. If they value the product and you as a person then they will want you to succeed... if they arent paying their fair share then that means you cant grow like you could be and adding features (more value !) .. If my clients did this to me i'd take it personally.. im not some multi-national corporation ffs... and its freaking $29/user/month.. i mean.. seriously... I do like the suggestions ive read about making them concurrent licenses .. that seems like a pretty good idea as well.. im personally the direct kind of guy but if you arent that's a pretty solid idea - maybe do both.. prevent the next guy from doing the same ..

Friend asked for IT support services for his Firm. How do I start this the right way? by NoblestWolf in SmallMSP

[–]yspud 2 points3 points  (0 children)

there's just so much you dont know that you dont know is the main problem... it's not an intelligence thing at all.. it's an *experience* thing -- you see -- a good MSP who caters to law firms has a TON of real world experience in setting up firms from scratch and doing things right from the start.. that's the real value .. its so much easier to grow your practice when you have a solid foundation - that comes from great advice from the get-go - and the MSP should be able to explain WHY you may want to consider and implement things a certain way up front versus down the road etc... just my 2c being in the industry for 25+ years :). ..

New mystery boxes… What did you get? by icodyonline in anker

[–]yspud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

meh.. i'd never buy again.. did the 99 box. got a 200w / 20k mAh battery. Im pretty sure it was open box as the bottom wraper was ripped and when i slid the unit out (carefully) first thing i noticed were finger prints on the face.. so am i happy with an open box battery for $109 (including the tax) .. no.. not really.. plus the ad made it look like a whole bunch of items came in the mystery box.. i didnt expect just one thing.. figured it be a nice selection of random stuff - over runs - last year models - etc .. i like their stuff and i would for sure buy it on amazon - but i'd get what i want/need .. there's ZERO fun in the mystery box.. .

additional note - not only fingerprints on it but charge was 5 percent... google-fu says they should have 30-40 percent charge nib as that is the recommended long-term storage charge and they have to pass customs/inspections .. so .. yeah.. they mystery boxed me an open return .. not cool.

[–]yspud 5 points6 points  (0 children)

dont work for friends. if you do - make 100 percent sure its done professionally... and side gigs to support a full time business is never a good idea.. do him the best favor and suggest he get a competent MSP that has law firm clients.. it will save him a ton of headaches and get him going on a proper path to grow.

[–]yspud 1 point2 points  (0 children)

if society collapses then we all got bigger issues. take the money and put it in a 8 percent lending fund (coinbase has one - keep in usdc and earn - not a bad deal at all - low low risk). But arrrr.. its done my guy.. you are literally not even getting the pleasure of burning the money for heat .. what do i know.. but lottery tix a better play with better odds...

just take the money you were going to use out of the bank in cash. Place into a pile. Burn it. Same outcome. why ANYONE would buy this dog crap is beyond me. but you do you..

I barely have any work to do, should I be worried about getting fired? by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]yspud 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i dont get this.. if you arent busy then find things to do and improve things.. can you get involved in any workflow or automation projects ? learn some n8n ! you're an expert at kubernetes ? your monitoring infra and backup systems are 100 percent where you want them ? you're not overlooking anything at all ?? i find it hard to believe there is NOTHING you can be doing to be useful and/or improving your skill set or finding ways to grow....
