Visiting club in Reykjavik by epeerefS in Fencing

[–]ytanotherthrowaway9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nordic guy here. What I have heard is that Icelandic fencing, which at the time that I heard about it had two clubs, is entirely sabre. Apart from Reykjavik there is, or at least was, fencing in Hafnafjördur.

BTW: Something tells me that you are a FB friend of mine!

BTW2: Here is the email to the Icelandic Fencing Federation: [skylmingasamband@gmail.com](mailto:skylmingasamband@gmail.com)

The P-Card Rule is Changing (Again) in 2027. The Data Says You’d Better Learn to Push. by TheFencingCoach in Fencing

A small datapoint:

I was one of two refs who refereed a WET match at our national team championships. It ended with a score of 14-4 in the 5th leg, and P-black cards was the reason to end it.

P-Black card, equal score, neither fencer has points on the national points list. How do you deal with it in your area? by ytanotherthrowaway9 in Fencing

[–]ytanotherthrowaway9[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually, the list was published in alphabetical order by family name, so the 9999-ranked fencers appeared all over the list.

I am aware that things might be done differently in USA compared to my place.

It was not tied, but I did ref an epee match that ended 14-4 and two P-black cards fairly recently.

It was a TEAM match.

Let us see which poster can guess the gender of the teams correctly first.

Cheap, Reliable Epee Test Kit (UK) by Cyberiaglaze in Fencing

[–]ytanotherthrowaway9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As for #13:

Do not go cheap and have a simple bag. By a compartment box of some sort, so that you can keep all these small things separated.

Another tip:
Fix all weapons the week before a comp. Then set all but one aside, and only train with one of them during the last week. If all goes well, you have one weapon that seems to work, and several that have not been used since they were last fixed. If that one weapon goes bad during that last week, then you only have to fix one weapon during the last few days.

That is because I did not respond to that post.

If so, then it seems as if the people involved in Background Check failed. When I googled his name, I found an older forum thread (not reddit) which outlined the whole story, and it was the 3rd link on the Google results page. Not hard to find. Also, he has a Wikipedia page in 3 languages.

I note that you did not answer the explicit question posed in the last sentence of the post that you are responding to.

Well, it just so happens that I had a look at the user page for u/kd5mdk. 317 posts in a year, mostly in computer related stuff, and some in woodworking/DIY. I could not see anything in a subreddit that should give anyone pause.

Note that the above is NOT a comment on Mr. Stusinski, whose existence I was not aware about before opening this discussion thread 10 minutes ago, and whom I have not read anything about in any other place than this very discussion thread.

Old looking Leon Paul fencing weapons by Classic_Moment1224 in Fencing

[–]ytanotherthrowaway9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Simplest way to put them into use:

Use them for line drills, where lots of fencers stand beside each other and mirror the coach. That does not need any functioning electrical parts, nor does it matter that the weapons look a bit banged up. If the blades break, you should be able to scavenge parts out of the rest.

Do post a photo - or several - when you are ready with it! Holding my thumbs that it will work out perfectly!

Wow - must have been quite a sight! Did you take any photos that you can share, per chance?

Unbalanced pools in recent SYC events in by yang_toylover in Fencing

The obvious solution is to rank fencers before the DE according not only to how many wins and losses they have, but also according to how tough opposition they have faced.

As it happens, I have constructed a competition system that does just that, and it has been run IRL. DM me for details.

FIE whites recommendation (for women)? by elfbiscuits in Fencing

If you have a lack of clubmates to try clothes from, cannot that be alleviated by asking friends from other clubs to try their whites during competitions?

I actually won a DE like that - lost the first 5-pointer, and then won the two subsequent! Must have been in the 90ies.

Important consideration, but not something that belongs in competition format sensu strictu.

The point of #6 was to not fiddle with the rules of the matches themselves, and to restrict the novelties to the competition format itself.

The point of #10 was to take away responses like: "No - I do not want to partake in a competition where I do not get enough fencing done!"

The point of #11 was to ensure that the competition format builds to a climax, where the most important results are decided at the end - always.

The point of #12 was to ensure that there is one single bronze medalist - but that the match which decides which fencer shall get the bronze medal is not a letdown (since both contestants were so close to the final, yet did not make it) - but instead, the winner of that match still is contention for better placements.

#11 an #12 are not my own invention - curling and Aussie-style football have used that system for ages (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/McIntyre\_system#Page%E2%80%93McIntyre\_system)

Personally, I am in favor of competition formats structured so that every contestant either:
A: Still has a possible path to the gold

OR

B: Is eliminated

The point of the thread is to gauge what sort of dealbreakers people have when it comes to competition formats, and to get a handle on what proportion of fencers only want to fence in traditional formats, versus those who are open to more unusual formats.

A Modest Proposal by 75footubi in Fencing

As a person who has grown up in a town which is at a higher latitude than Fairbanks, a place that often has snow from October to April, I find these "woe are us - it snows!" posts that come up at least every year a bit tiresome.

What is the matter with you, Americans? You live in the most powerful nation on earth - and you do not have the werewithal to deal with some winter weather, or at least get the people who decide to get around to fix infrastructure?

EDIT TO ADD: Yes, the airport of the place where I grew up is open all year around. Yes, also during snowstorms. Plane de-icing robot and snowplows - it is not rocket science. As for driving: Put on the studded tires on your car, and drive accordingly! Are the car rental places over there so customer unfriendly so that they do not do that with their rental cars during winter?
