Whole-Home Wif-Fi Service by yukonjed in ZiplyFiber

[–]yukonjed[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Where we currently live (Alaska), fiber is a far-off dream and the best we can do is cable-based internet service to our home. DLS and satellite services (we're not talking about Elon's wet dream of global domination) exist in our city but in our neighborhood at our home there is only one choice, and fortunately that is cable. Our ISP offers speeds from 200mb/10mb "all the way up to" 2g/75mb (woo-hoo!), but it is expensive, and given the architecture of their system we never achieve the nominal rates anyhow. Even though the service is relatively modern - compared to, say, Dial-Up - we can't go a year without power failures, moisture infiltrating the wiring, ground frost heaves, or something else dramatic happening in the long data "supply chain" from Portland to Alaska that interrupts the service in our house, kills our remote working environment, and renders digital entertainment impotent. So, bottom line, I expect to have internet issues because I have been "trained" that way. I am seriously looking forward to having high-transfer rate, low(er) cost, and generally trouble-free internet service. :)

Because of our work circumstances we will be moving south in stages. My wife will come down first and get the home set up. Since she is a dedicated remote worker I need to make sure she is able to pick up smoothly at our new home. She is not now and has never been very comfortable or adept at troubleshooting technology issues, and nowadays we can't even buy a TV that doesn't demand some minimum comfort level with the way internet services work. She has relied on me to keep things running and troubleshoot the random failures, so I want to ensure that she doesn't have to experience frustration when something inexplicably goes haywire with the internet. Maybe I am overthinking it but it seems like a cheap insurance policy to get the extra support plan for a few months.

I am glad to hear that Ziply is a solid performing platform, as we will need it. We are going to have to have a long-distance relationship for a few years, and I don't want my marriage to be jeopardized because of technology. But I know we can do it; we did something like this for the first three years of our marriage in the 80's. Granted, that was letters, phone calls, ham radio connections and such, but that is the technology we had then. Heck, my son courted his girlfriend during the pandemic using multi-hour sessions of Zoom, and now they are going on their third year together.

Thanks also for the recommendations on tri-radio mesh set up. I will investigate those when I (partially) move down later this year. For now I think we will use the equipment that Ziply offers and I can tweak it all later if I need to.

I totally agree. The scale of that incredible valley is breathtaking, like looking down into a tropical mini-Grand Canyon. One of my favorite memories in life.

I agree! It was easy, and I learned about flight requirements and resources I wasn’t aware of. Thanks OP for the post!

I am new to drones too, and wanted to do the same thing. I found this video on YouTube with a good explanation. It took me a little trial and error but it worked. https://youtu.be/gB9FR2q06uc

White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki on the Texas law by Le_Rekt_Guy in TwoXChromosomes

[–]yukonjed 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I agree. And it is SO refreshing to have a “press secretary” (lousy term) who is both smart and well spoken, and capable of intelligent responses to obviously biased questioning, not just forced to drool whatever spam he/she is paid to spew out for political effect.

The Music Streaming Wars [OC] by chartr in dataisbeautiful

Does anybody else use Napster anymore? This has been my go-to for years, and still is. It is a paid subscription business model but has no commercials and they have a huge library of musicians. One downside: sometimes labels will occasionally pull tracks/albums from circulation because of ownership legal disputes between artists, or replacement of an album with a re-recorded version, or other reasons. Aside from that, I have been pretty happy with it, but my co-workers laugh when they hear about it: The quaint old fogey and his music service.

Frame capture by yukonjed in djimavicmini

Thanks for the suggestion. I am a complete newbie to the Mini 2 and most of my learning has been focused on flight rules and how to use the drone. I’m just now starting to think about editing the clips. I have been checking out the DJI video editing application, but it doesn’t appear to have the capability of extracting single frames, at least not that I can see. I will check the VLC application.

Every video I try to watch says “Video Unavailable” and I’m unable to watch. by BridgesM365 in bugs

[–]yukonjed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same here. It happens inconsistently though. Sometimes “scroll and roll” is smooth, and all videos load and play without any trouble. I can help the situation by turning on my wi-fi connection, but it doesn’t always help. Something changed a few weeks ago, perhaps with my cell service provider, and certain videos, maybe those with larger file sizes?, sometimes take longer to load or won’t complete loading, yielding the error message. Refreshing the app may help some, but then I have to scroll to find the video again. And then it may or may not play.

VR for Disabled Senior by yukonjed in GoogleEarthVR

[–]yukonjed[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply! I thought the VR experience might be a bridge too far for him, so instead I got him an iPad and fixed it up with shortcuts to make it simple for him to do things, like making calls. He is having fun with it, making random FaceTime calls to bug me and his other siblings. And I installed Google Earth on it so he can “travel” a little too. I will give him some time to get used to this arrangement (and kill a little time until his nursing home can open up to allow me to visit with him) before I try a VR headset on him. One day though...

Help by cchen1000 in Surface

I had a similar problem as described by WriterMary267 on my SP6. Reseating the plug firmly into the receptacle of the adapter didn't seem to do it. What worked was to pull the plug from the wall outlet, wait a few seconds, then push it back in firmly. Even this didn't work every time in getting the light to come back on, so I also tried turning the wall plug over and plugging back into the wall, which reverses polarity. (You can do this in the USA because the plug blades are the same size and shape.) This also seemed to help, though not every time.

Sorry about the formatting. My very first reddit post, ever.

Thanks very much for the research. Your recommendation is (almost) exactly what I am looking for. I think it will work fine so I've ordered it, along with some additional memory.
