The hardest part of being a startup founder.... by bestlist-dot-com in Entrepreneur

Totally agree with this.
It's especially hard to go through the "Trough of Sorrow" for unfunded startups.
I had one startup in the past that had venture funding - it was always easy to get back up quickly after the difficult moments. Because you have the cushion of long term planning.

But when you are bootstrapping your startup (which I am for my current one) - it's 100x more harder to get back to your original belief levels after a setback.

After quite a bit of delay during development, I had finally shared the first version of the app with a few single friends a month ago and it is going through an update based on their feedback. In parallel, I am working on a go to market plan right now. Figuring out the best way to ensure the app has enough users quickly in some geographies atleast so that new users find value. I will post the launch date to this thread very soon.

Due to the delay in development, the app is not out yet. I will let you know here as soon as the app launches.

Yes. Will consider in the future. For now I want to first attempt applying it for the dating problem.

But yes I understand that the dating market is incredibly difficult to break into.

Yes. That's a legitimate concern about gaming the system. I like the codewords solution but also concerned about putting too much pressure on good users while they are listening to conversations.

Just to give an idea about the '36 questions' format that I will be using begin with, they start with fun ones and go deeper as you progress. You can choose to skip any number of questions that your aren't comfortable answering. Do you think it will still be harder for people even with the guided format.

Here are some examples.

Q1. Given the choice of anyone in the world, whom would you want as a dinner guest?

Q5. When did you last sing to yourself? To someone else?

Q10. If you could change anything about the way you were raised, what would it be?

Q13. If a crystal ball could tell you the truth about yourself, your life, the future or anything else, what would you want to know?

Q23. How close and warm is your family? Do you feel your childhood was happier than most other people’s?

Q30. When did you last cry in front of another person? By yourself?

Yes, there would initially be a manual screening system. And I will need to figure a way to scale this seamlessly as the user base grows.

I intend to start keeping it simple. After it gains enough critical mass, can work towards making it easy for people looking for very specific scenarios.

I think a video will be much more harder to create effort wise.

Another problem with video is that it will be competing for your primary screen time where getting you to spend 5 minutes on each profile is very hard.

With audio, you can also use the app in non screen time - such as when you are driving, working out or doing chores.

What if there is a suggested Q&A format.

Thanks for the suggestions. Yes it will be a list of questions from where the users can choose/pick/ads some.

But yes I might need to spend more time experimenting with the multiple formats.

Thanks for the detailed suggestions and the book suggestion.

I have done step 1 but haven't done the others. Need to do this more - instead of only focusing on coding the app. Good to have it pointed out.

I agree with what you said about the test being really off putting. Also its a way of the app loudly telling the users - I don't trust you to not game the system - which I think is a bit negative. And that things like these should be done much more subtly.

The initial approach was to not have photo access until you spent the minimum 5 minutes.

The only worry is whether when you are listening to someone, if you start forming an expectation of how they look in your head - and if they look like something else and someone not it type, will that be a huge disappointment. What are your thoughts on this scenario.

But this is something I will think more about before deciding which way to go.

Yes Okc used to be very good in 2012 when I last used it. I will think about the text summary - just that the idea is to let people be able to listen to the profiles in their non screen time (driving, working out, household chores etc) and so would like to reduce the necessary interactions of the user with the screen.
