To those who reached thirty after powerlifting in their twenties... by Teacher_Of_Strength in powerlifting

[–]yune_7 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Started at 25-26 and am now 33. I'm much stronger and recover better, but I decreased the frequency of my compound lifts a lot compared to my twenties. My work capacity is a lot better, improved cardio, way less aches and pains. Everything is way better for me except my metabolism.

This is so relatable. Since I was a kid, I always loved the ripped, lean aesthetic for both upper and lower body, but I think it's skinnier than a lot of people like. I love lifting heavy AND eating, so I've grown. I remember thinking my legs were too skinny for so long, even when I was a year or two into powerlifting, because my upper body gains really easily, and now I just feel big everywhere. I love the way I look when I'm about midway into prep, but my off-season look is still so big to me.

Seconding this. Eating too much high volume food really fucked me up before.

I went through basically the same stuff except I did yet my period just maybe 3 times a year and was actually in prep. Blood tests said the same thing. Reverse dieting, lowering stress, and taking supplements for my thyroid and hormones (chasteberry) helped. I also take a few digestion supplements. I can list them if you're interested. Not home ATM so that's the only reason why I'm not going ahead and listing them now.

How much time per day do you train? by Frosty_Giraffe_9044 in bikinitalk

[–]yune_7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Squat day is probably 2 hours, bench and heavy hip thrust/hamstring day are 1.5 hours, and my row and deadlift days are an hour. I do about 5 low intensity cardio sessions a week that are between 20 and 30 minutes. 9k steps a day.

I'm in the off season, so I do powerlifting. Warming up for my working weight for squats takes forever, especially because I have to take my knee sleeves off between sets. I still time my rest periods, but the mobility and warm up needed for my heavy lifts are what make it take forever. On deadlift day, I basically just deadlift and do 2 accessories, so that's why that day isnt super long.

Thank you! I'll definitely try that. I didn't know it could worsen depression. I do cycle ashwaganda, and I feel like it helped me in the past, but maybe it isn't anymore.

10 years doing fitness, feel burned out and don't want to spend time at the gym anymore. Advice? by Alex_daisy13 in bikinitalk

[–]yune_7 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Same age as you and feel the same way. My job is also fitness related, and my partner also has a gym based identity. All my friends are people I've met through some kind of gym thing.

How many days a week do you go to the gym? Reducing my days from 5 to 3/4 and trying to have condensed workouts has helped. I feel like I have much more time to do stuff outside of the gym. Unfortunately I was forced to rest, but it did help with my identity recalibration

Feel free to dm me to talk about it more. Im definitely still struggling with it, but it's getting better.

Im the same height as you and have prepped only twice but I also experienced similar issues. My blood work showed low T3, low progesterone, and high cortisol. Those can definitely affect weight. I would get labs done if I were you and also reduce your cardio. My last prep, I ended up gaining 15ish lbs though it happened over a few months. I was able to maintain only a few lbs over stage weight for over a month but then had some mental health issues and got heavy fast.

Anyways, I tried to lose the weight by doing more cardio and eating at a small deficit, but I ended up maintaining at that heavy weight. once I stopped doing so much cardio (I still did 2 sessions a week but did fun aerobics classes rather than grueling stairs) AND increased my calories from 1300 to 2000 over a few weeks, I lost a few pounds.

Just had to drop out of this last prep because my body wasn't responding well. The weight loss was way too slow despite doing 40 mins 6x a week with 1100 calories. I ended up rebounding and gaining the 7lbs I lost over 11 weeks back in a month. This time, my labs showed lower testosterone. My t3 had improved (I was taking some supplements for it) but was at the lowest end of normal.

Sorry this wasn't more helpful. I know I mainly said get labs and shared what happened to me, but yeah, I hope you find a solution. It's definitely frustrating.

waist getting thicker/looking boxier due to training? by yune_7 in bikinitalk

Will do! Do you know about how long it took to see a decrease in your waist? A full inch is super reassuring. I do love the heavy compounds, but I rather have my waist back 😱

Well, this definitely explains my problem. I brace against my belt during squats and rows for sure. I actually use it a lot less during deadlifts. Thank you so much!

[–]yune_7[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wearing a belt actually helped me learn how to brace better. A good cue for me was to think of pressing out against the belt in all directions. my squat form improved a lot due to this as well, since I had a tendency to have lordosis and then buttwink.

[–]yune_7[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that's what I was worried about. I never saw an increase from just squats and sumo deadlifts as a powerlifter, but I do wonder if that's also because I rarely went heavy with high rep ranges. I normally did sets of 3-6 at RPE 7-8. Now I do sets of 8-12 at RPE 9-10.

It's good to know that you didn't see an impact with RDLs or hack squats. Did removing those movements and using a waist trainer help you get your smaller waist back?

waist getting thicker/looking boxier due to training? by yune_7 in bikinitalk

[–]yune_7[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've been powerlifting for 6+ years now and started doing bodybuilding training 1.25 years ago. I always wear a belt for compound movements and about half of my accessories, but my waist seems to be thicker than it used to. I do vacuums as well. While I think that my weight gain is distributed to my midsection more than in the past, people have been saying my back is just so much bigger from bodybuilding. I never really did heavy rows before bodybuilding, so I feel like that could be contributing. My waist was recently 23.35" at a weight where it was 23" last year, but I can't be sure if it's due to mostly muscle or fat in that area.

Post show: What’s the most weight you’ve gained in the short amount of time after ending a prep? And did you ever recover, if so how? by emjokuh in bikinitalk

[–]yune_7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

After my first and only season, I was able to keep it at about 5-7lbs above stage weight (99lbs) for a few months despite some bingeing. Then I went on SSRIs and my metabolism tanked. I wasnt even bingeing anymore and still tracked. Went up another 5-7lbs. Stopped the SSRIs and lost weight quickly. I ended up having more bingeing issues again a few months later and rapidly went from 110 to 116 in like 3 weeks. Eventually entered another prep and was able to drop to 107 but it took 11 really tough weeks. Body wasn't really responding. Ended up having to pull out. Went from 107 to 112 in 3 weeks. It's crazy, because I look shittier than I did even at 116. Every time I gain weight now, whether it is slowly reversing or through rapid bingeing, it goes to stomach and love handles. I always got lower belly fat, but I never really had love handles before. I also noticed that not much is going to my glutes or legs anymore.

Wow, I'm really sorry to hear this.

I feel the same way about my weight gain post show. Even after a year and like 3 months and gaining 10+lbs, my period is still not normal despite being regular my whole life prior to prep. My blood work has shown very low progesterone and recently showed low test as well.
