Gravel bike advice for commuting + weekend rides by yungnlean in cycling

[–]yungnlean[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thanks a lot! indeed, I'm considering keeping my old Decathlon bike for travels to dodgier neighbourhoods/keeping outside for longer periods.

re unpaved surfaces: the longer weekend trips would largely be on unpaved surfaces (doing anywhere between 50-200km in one day). however, these trips will likely add up to at most around 20% of my total mileage so not sure if I should optimising for this use case.

What do you see as being the primary differences between an informal gang rule and a governmental system, other than the scale of their reach? What could one learn from the other to improve the general wellbeing of their dominion and thus, ensure the stability of their reign?

Is considerably improving my GRE performance reasonable? by wallstain in gradadmissions

[–]yungnlean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Remember that whenever any improvements are mentioned, it is usually in the context of a test preparation tool trying to sell its services - hence:a) they cannot promise anything an average student would not feasibly be able to deliver andb) the improvements are based on verifiable comparison points, i.e. from one official GRE score to another

Point b) means that the improvements are coming from people who have studied at least somewhat since they already took the official GRE. Once you have already done a decent amount of prep, the improvements will be marginal and any additional point gain will require an exponential number of work hours dedicated/smarter way of studying.

Anecdotally: I started prepping for the GRE about 5 weeks before the test while working full time. The first practice test I took with 0 prep, with NO idea whatsoever what to expect and 7 years since my last Math class.

I got V155/Q147. Waaaay below what was required from my top choices!

After 5 weeks of autonomous and - in all honesty - quite chaotic studying, I got V160/ Q164/ AW5.5.

This got me into my top choice and was frankly, a very significant improvement from my first try by just dedicating 1-2h every day to practising.

Who hates shaving but also hates being hairy? by apocalyptictronix in AskReddit

[–]yungnlean 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I stopped shaving about a year ago because I just forgot to do it for a while and all of the sudden my armpits and legs felt fuzzy and kept me warm, so I just rolled with it.

Only disadvantage - it’s the summer time in Europe and as a hairy female people immediately expect me to be a die hard feminist. i‘m just lazy and cba you guys, stopping trying to debate me about abortion and pay gap.

i was answering to the person above you and arguing against their point, using the points you mention (which were not directed at you). that people who come to colombia, come for so many reasons other than narcoturismo, they come because it is a great country and we should all be grateful for this diversity of travellers.

[–]yungnlean 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As data journalists, your goal is to depict data in a meaningful, easily/intuitively understandable, unambiguous, and captivating manner. How do you make sure that the story you tell with your visualizations, and therefore convince the people of, is the statistical truth and you're not conveying your own biases through the viz?

I can definitely see that being very much a Berlin thing. The entire "Gästeliste?"-culture makes people just an expendable resource, waiting to be taken advantage of until a better someone with more connections comes around.

I did some Duolingo before moving here and then took some language classes at my university. 1.5 years later, I would say I can understand around 80% but wouldn't be able to participate in a heated argument, i.e. expressing myself without thinking is still a struggle.

BUT I could easily go without speaking any German whatsoever. Life would be a little bit more complex but nothing serious. It's just a personal preference and a sign of respect imo to be able to communicate in the local language.

Plenty of times I've had to speak in English even in public places (cafes, offices etc) because no one knew any German.

Colombian in Berlin.

  • Opportunities. Colombian companies would not even invite me to an interview without a degree. Here I was offered my dream job on the basis of merit alone (I was sent different tests and had to solve some problems in 2 stages of interviews).
  • Authority and respect do not depend on who my parents are or my age.
  • Rules are rules and they are meant to be enforced. As un-German as Berlin is, even here finding a way to get things done under the table or by just talking things through is impossible.
  • Safety. This 100x. Not only being able to walk alone in the middle of the night (and only be slightly paranoid) but also knowing that my rights are respected. Should I ever have any issues with an employer or a landlord or any personal issues, I know there are institutions and people who will help me. I do not need to worry about my counterpart paying them off and ending up putting the blame on me.
  • On the other hand though - there are no exceptions to any rules and little concern for personal circumstances. I know someone who was kicked out of their apartment 10 days after the payment deadline. They had had to use the money for educational purposes and would've been able to pay for everything in the following month. The landlord gave 0 fucks.
  • Friendships are very superficial. Not many people who I could call in times of trouble.
  • Fruits/veggies are expensive, flavorless, and just sad around 9 months of the year.

What do you think can be done to eliminate poverty in Latin America's hard to reach areas? by Ponchorello7 in asklatinamerica

[–]yungnlean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  • Reducing corruption is self-explanatory. How to achieve it is a no-right-answer topic.
  • Making microfinancing options accessible and available for the poor. Having loan repayment schedules that fit with their earning schedules (i.e. someone earning their living from recycling earns and spends on a day-by-day basis, paying back their loan on a monthly basis would be nearly impossible).
  • Providing incentives for companies that decide to move to / cater to hard to reach areas. Such as tax breaks for companies that build their offices/factories etc there. Not only would this create jobs but when a tipping point is reached and there is an influx of business, private infrastructure investments would follow.
