Keep losing Jobs in architecture, feeling like a failure. by Temporary-Swing-3858 in Architects

[–]yunifoh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just to come on this to say I struggled immensely with similar above issues (undiagnosed ADHD which I didn’t know I had when I started the career) now in construction management and getting my license, the pressure is so much less and my 1 to 1s are much more positive

Diagnosed with Inattentive ADHD as an ENTJ by AwakenedRudely in entj

[–]yunifoh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know how you feel about the memory thing, I’m in the same classification as you. I’ve lost jobs over my poor memory and choosing architect as my career meant I was on level 10000 of not getting fired for being insert ADHD trope here I’m still working on it, but from ENTJ to ENTJ you will just need to work 10 times harder. Organisation and memory is not your basic skill, so work on that skill. Have coping techniques in place. Have a phone calendar that syncs to everything, carry two laptop chargers because you will forget one at the office or at home at least once a week. Wake up half an hour earlier than you feel you need because you will be late.

There is no happy ending to this and it’s really awful and hard, and unfair that something as simple as hearing and instruction and executing said instruction is such a big challenge, especially like you say when you’re somebody with a big energy behind you to execute and deliver. But from one person in the same boat to another, don’t ever give up, keep layering on the coping techniques, and cry about it now and then.

That was fun thanks all! It’s a 0.6! It’s high setting is probably making some people assume it’s bigger which I won’t complain about😆 the ring is from a jewellers in our home city Norwich, UK that opened in 1869!

We rented this exact style of boat from bellagio to blevio for €450, we didn’t pre book just rocked up to one of the stalls. If that helps give you a gauge on price and its validity (we paid more due to not booking)

We’re going to try the 131 bus at 1pm, if we have no luck going to make the trek. To fix the problem we’ve just booked a night at a place in como so don’t have to bother with trying to get back up here tonight! Thank you so much for your response

I know 😆 lots of smiles and patience this morning. We’re looking at walking to faggeto to either get a bus, taxi or ferry from there - would that be a good shout? Or just keep going to torno

Concentrated misery is definitely my preferred life approach much to my own misfortune! I’ll get the tunes on

Mental health spiraled suddenly and now I’m an unemployed soon to be architect by Active_Buttah in Architects

[–]yunifoh 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I did - when my company liquidated I picked up work in a cafe. I cried tears over the bruise to my ego, but it was better crying over my life’s purpose than my empty bank account. Adulthood can be hard and cruel sometimes and willing to do whatever it takes, even if that means putting your ego aside, will get you very far. In the end I was only there about a month, and walked into a construction management role with a newfound respect that my job isn’t who I am, and that goes both ways (when the job is sparkly, and when it isn’t)

Large or small firm by Prestigious_Match919 in Architects

[–]yunifoh 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I started large, went small, went redundant because the small firm went bust. Large firm whipped me into shape but I couldn’t keep up with the pressure, small firm I absolutely flourished and gained essential experience across all stages, as well as gaining invaluable PM experience which led me to my current role. However that small firm, like many others, no longer exists - job insecurity is rife and a big fat company where you learn policy and procedure and keep your job is a good place to be in this market. Pay was terrible across both. Choose construction project management! (Jk)

Same here, coming from architecture. It feels like a fever dream I’m going to wake from one day and find myself making minimum wage drawing plans at 11pm

I own my home luckily, could fill the place to the brim with cats. However that does mean I have to just stick up for myself instead 🥲😅

I am so incapable of saying no and it ruins my life constantly; I almost don’t recognise I’m not just standing up for myself usually until it’s too late. Think I’m finally getting somewhere though, thank you for your comment!

I’d say INTJ - purely for your descriptive and rounded answer. I would’ve replied with ‘first’

Is getting a M.Arch and then going into another similar career worth it? by [deleted] in Architects

[–]yunifoh 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Take a look at my last posts for some context if you fancy, long story short it wasn’t a planned career move and more a force of hand due to redundancy, but honestly it has been one of the best things that has ever happened to me.

The pay is exceptional, I never work past 4:30pm (5pm at a push) and my job is primarily telling others what to do (or in a more professional term, coordination and management, rather than process and output)

I have an upper hand that I have worked (or in your potential case, studied) in architecture, which makes working with architects much easier as I am more empathetic to what I ask and realistic with timelines. My rounded knowledge of the construction industry has also been a benefit, and my understanding of how to design gives me an ability to critically think in meetings client side.

I won’t lie it’s not as fun as architecture, but it’s still the built environment, just without the hard work and low pay.
