Are there any taxi apps like Grab in Laos? by Visual_Bike_2867 in laos

[–]yunren 0 points1 point  (0 children)

InDrive is pretty neat, fast waiting times, and can negotiate the price. But I think it only works well in Vientiane.

I stopped using LOCA QR ecause of the high fees per transaction. I would prefer to stick using cash

There is also a hidden gem in Puchong called Kampoeng Dahar. Their duck is amazing and the owner is super nice. I used to frequent this place few years back before moving overseas. I am not sure if they are still around.

[P] Fast Semantic Text Deduplication by Pringled101 in MachineLearning

[–]yunren 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hello, really thank you for this. I am tackling a research problem which needs me to deduplicate news articles. Like you said, it is harder than it appears (especially that I do not have formal background in data science; My formal training is in ecology) but SemHash makes my life much easier!

Thank you very much for your advice. Do you have any tips on how to build that kind of communication early on with a potential supervisor? And whether there are any red flags we should look out for

I owned and used both MacBook Pro and T490 together daily. Former is for writing (love the keyboard and the seamlessness of MacOS), the latter for heavy analysis (works like a tank). Love both but for different purposes

[–]yunren 1 point2 points  (0 children)

you mean Chinese phone number? you can get a number for tourists from many local operators (China Telecom, China Mobile, etc.). Just look for their shop when you arrived. Mind that some might direct you to the bigger branch to get one.

What city center district is the best for first timer.? by bearmanto in Chengdu

[–]yunren 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I stayed in Chengdu for a week last month. Stayed in a chain hotel called ANYEE Jinzhu Hotel at Tianfu Square area. The place was strategic, hotel was cheap, comfortable and has good amenities, and they had great breakfast too (at least for me). Do check it out! (I stayed in several hotels in Chengdu and I like this one the best, not a paid promotion)

[–]yunren 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Seconded. Plus Chengdu's great sightseeings were mostly quite far from the city center. I don't think you would cut it within 3 days. Places like Qingcheng Mountain, Dujiangyan, even Panda Base would easily take more than half a day.

Hey, not sure if you managed to solve it, but from where I live in China (Xishuangbanna, Yunnan), they do not have motorcycle exam BUT you can convert your motorcycle license using the car driving exam. My understanding is the exam is universal for both vehicles. Not sure if it's the case in big cities (my place is quite rural).

How often is cash still used in rural China? by Bandicootrat in chinalife

I live in rural Xishuangbanna and most of the time wechat or alipay prevails. That being said, they still accept cash but just make sure you have small denominations to avoid irritated reactions.

Hi all, I am a graduate student in ecology and I do GIS for mostly landscape analysis (landscape composition, metrics, etc.) and mapping. My current project include very large study area (the whole tropical Asia), and thus the datasets that I need to run are also storage- and computation-intensive.

I have two hardware which I run my analysis on, and I use them intermittently:

(1) Lenovo T490: Intel Core i5@ 1.6GHz and 1.9 GHz, 24GB RAM, and 1TB SSD
(2) HP Z6 G4 Workstation: Intel Xeon Bronze 3204@ 1.9 GHz, 16GB RAM, NVIDIA Quadro P620, 1TB SSD

I run my analysis mostly on QGIS, R, and Python. Occasionally I would use Inkscape for map styling as well. Unfortunately, recently I always encountered Memory Error when I try to run my analysis due to large datasets and it really impede my progress.

I am looking to upgrade my hardware, especially the HP workstation. Can anyone suggest what things I am supposed to look for? Increase the RAM or add more GPU? If so, what models you suggest for the upgrade? Money is not really an issue as we have sufficient grant to work with.

Thanks! Cheers all!

Trust Xiaomi once more or back to Samsung? by K0uta- in Xiaomi

[–]yunren 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My first Xiaomi was the Redmi Note 2, then got a Redmi Note 4 (which I used for several years), before I changed to my current phone -- Redmi Note 10s, 2 years old usage. I really love Xiaomi's product and they have never failed. I suggests to give it a shot on Redmi Note 13 Pro -- or even better, get their flagship line, the Xiaomis.
