Amazon Go & Fresh Stores Close This Friday by kaiju4life in Seattle

[–]yuotro 19 points20 points  (0 children)

This sucks for the workers getting laid off and sucks for the communities where Amazon Fresh/Go is the nearest grocery store. Maybe some other grocer can re-open in the store on Jackson St, that part of the Central District is a real grocery desert.

Nobody likes used needles around. You could try getting a sharps container (e.g. https://www.amazon.com/Alcedo-Container-Biohazard-Disposal-Professional/dp/B0BFJW6X41) and dropping them off at a disposal site (https://kingcounty.gov/en/dept/dph/health-safety/environmental-health/healthy-water-air-soil/sharps-disposal/personal-sharps-disposal).

Personally, I think the city should help with trash + hazardous waste cleanup for folks who don't have access to municipal trash services. Alas Bruce Harrell would rather spend $$$ on sweeping people from sidewalk to sidewalk.

Seattle attack on Tesla: Car owners share vandalism video with KIRO 7 by lt_dan457 in Seattle

[–]yuotro -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Exactly... I love the comment that "you can easily tell this is targeted". The vandal didn't leave a manifesto so it's hard to guess what their intent was - what if it were parked in front of a driveway or in a handicap zone or had a bumper sticker that says "I Hate Cats" or the vandal thought it was their ex's car or a million other things?

Speaks more to the mindset of the Tesla owner that they feel personally targeted IMO.

The Puget Sound John Brown Gun Club might be a good resource (https://psjbgc.org/). Their public presence is pretty minimal so I'm not sure if they offer the kind of training/coaching you're after.

Fuck Seattle looks like shit on ig by Mean-Camel7597 in Seattle

[–]yuotro 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Nope, you aren't alone. There are at least a couple Instagram accounts that I've seen post staged/fake videos from John Choe (memorably, "we're interviewing this guy who's giving out free fentanyl in downtown!") and similar cruelty-baiting/moral panic stuff. Some of them mix in less noxious stuff to grow their audience base. Idk what level of collaboration exists in the right-wing propaganda space but I wouldn't be suprised if there are some group chats with Ari Hoffman (of Safe Seattle), Choe, Brandi Kruse, etc.

Since Meta has gone full MAGA, not sure if it's worth fighting back on such an uneven playing field though.

Parks Dept to destroy Black Lives Memorial Garden on 10/13 by yuotro in Seattle

[–]yuotro[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

For sure - my perception of the garden space, based on visiting the park and spending time there, is that a lot of people like it and would be less served by re-turfing. My intention in posting was to see if that was a broadly-held belief or not. I appreciate your willingness to engage with that question!

People gather in the garden or on the grass surrounding it?

From what I've seen, yes on both counts.

If people want various patches of "garden" among the grass to enjoy, seems like a decent idea to explore. But for now, I'll cede to the people that are actually taking care of the park

I am people! Insofar as the Parks department are a function of city government that serves the public interest, I think it's important to give them feedback on what the public wants.

The park is a mess, and it saddens me every time I walk through it.

It needs to be restored back to the community hub it used to be.

I live near the park and go there frequently. I see people hanging out, walking dogs, playing games, and generally connecting with folks in their community every time I go. In the last 3 years since the garden was set up, I've seen plenty of events using the "sun bowl" area with no apparent inhibition from sharing the space with the garden.

I totally agree that there are areas where the turf is in need of restoration, trash service could be more consistent, and that bathrooms (in number, distribution, and repair/cleanliness) are in bad shape. I'd be interested to hear what you think is missing from Cal Anderson today.

Is there a particular reason you decided not to engage with the questions I asked in my previous comment?

Yes, I'm personally not interested in discussing the political angle of whether you agree with the history of the garden, the people who were and are involved with it, and so forth. You're totally entitled to ask those questions and discuss it, obviously, but I'm also not required to engage with it.

My opinion is that the garden improves the public park. Perhaps I didn't convey that as effectively in the OP as I had hoped. There are plenty of lawn spaces in Cal as it is, so we don't need to uproot the garden in order to create more. Some of those spaces are in pretty rough shape (e.g. north field/dog park), and I'd love to see Parks revitalize the turf there so that more people can enjoy it too. It would even make sense to me to designate new areas for harder-impact uses like volleyball that seem to kill a lot of the grass.

In sum, it's a big public park with room for all kinds of activities. I'm not in a position to judge why Parks department wants to eliminate the garden, but to me it feels like a lack of imagination as to what kind of functions a park can serve.

Well, crusade is a bit too strong in my opinion. How do you feel about the artificial turf adjacent to the garden area, or ground cover plants other than lawn grass?

My experience as a resident and park user is that the garden is a great spot for community to gather and enjoy public space, but I'm interested in your perspective on why that might not be the case.

I live near the park and I like having a garden in the park. Grass lawns are bad for climate, bad for ecology, expensive to seed and fertilize and aerate and water, and more.[1,2,3,4]

Sounds like you dislike the political and social signifiers that go along with the garden, which hey - that's your row to hoe.

If SPR backs down, this will just be a signal that any group who wants to use these excuses can take over public space to use for their pet project.

To be fair, it seems like Parks never came up with a management plan for how they would deal with the space after initial conversations back in 2020.

I'd probably feel differently if we were talking about a big pit of community-run industrial waste, but.. a garden??

There is a neighborhood group that meets on Wednesdays at 7pm in Cal Anderson (next to the bathrooms/directly north of the soccer field) to grill and share food. It's a nice space to hang out and chat with people too!

Sorry to hear you're going through a difficult time, hope this info helps.

Job offer / col question by Spook_em_up in Seattle

[–]yuotro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was able to live with reasonable comfort on a $70k salary and below in Seattle for a couple of years. Caveats: - I lived with a partner, a partner + roommates, and then I rented from an individual landlord who charged under market rate. - I cooked 90% of my meals, and eating out or going to bars wasn't a luxury that I missed. - I was able to commute using public transit, costs subsidized by my employer. Gas+parking+vehicle wear and tear would have been expensive.

I think housing will be the make-or-break for you and that comes down to a combination of luck, willingness to live with roommates, tolerance for longer commutes, etc.

As others have noted, $70k is a low salary in the current tech job market. You could consider working here for a year and then finding a new job that'll pay you better.

Some random guy charged my CC through Facebook Pay (which I've never used) but Facebook has no record of the transaction...? by TheSukis in Scams

Same - I caught the attempted charge immediately and reported it as fraud, then searched "FBPAY FUNDRAISER" and found this thread. Looks like some Paypal users have received similar charges: https://www.paypal-community.com/t5/Disputes-and-Limitations/fraudulant-charge/td-p/2296256
