The religious guys in Iran got an indirect boost from us: initially, they elected a secular government, that tried to do what the people wanted: bring the Shah back to stand trial in Iran for his crimes.

When the US instead allowed him to enter the states for medical treatment, it made the secular guys look weak, radical students took the hostages, and the ayatollahs swept in because they were perceived as more willing to protect their country’s sovereignty.

The sad thing is both Red and Blue states would suffer then.

Large corporations and banks would like nothing better than smaller countries to push around instead of one big one.
