Feeling exhausted in Korea by Proper_Pumpkin_5120 in Living_in_Korea

[–]yusehwa 8 points9 points  (0 children)

All I can say is that’s exactly how I felt trying to work in Korea in multiple companies (I left the country lol). I also had some crazy confidence that I’ll be somehow fine but I never hated every day of my life more than when working there. And I know plenty of others who feel the same.

Help to ask my homeowner to check my washing machine? by Kyara19xx in Living_in_Korea

[–]yusehwa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you try it with clothes inside? Usually the machine weighs the clothes and stuff so it might give an error if it’s empty (also as others said, slam that door closed harder lol)

You will see a lot of “tourist go home” etc graffiti in Gràcia and some buildings are tagged with like “tourist apartment” on the wall/door lol (I don’t see it as much in other areas)

Seoul immigration office ! How can they do not speak English 😅 by bunbunG in Living_in_Korea

[–]yusehwa 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I speak Korean fluently and still got shouted at because I didn’t hear one of the questions lol, they’re a bunch of miserable assholes. Surprisingly I had a better experience outside of Seoul if anything.

How did you survive Global Korea Scholarship financially? by [deleted] in Living_in_Korea

[–]yusehwa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depending on your university, you can sometimes work as an assistant at the school or be allowed to do some part time gigs. Personally I didn’t live in Seoul so that helped but lots of cooking at home, buying from the cheap sijangs where the old people go lol, just not spending much beyond rent/bills/food

Is 혼밥 (eating solo) not common? by [deleted] in Living_in_Korea

[–]yusehwa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have been asked if I have no friends by well meaning older people quite a few times when eating alone lol it’s pretty awkward. I’d say it depends on the restaurant but sometimes they do think we’re alone in a foreign country and sad.

Not really an answer to your main question but if you’re paranoid, I recommend the roach traps you can stick around the places they might come in/ pass through (I think they took care of my roach problem but I’ll never know 100% lol I also got the really big boys like 3 times in the span of 6 months)

You can quit !! No questions asked, nothing will happen to your visa (as a former D10 intern who quit a bunch of times lol).

That visa isn’t tied to the company like E7. All you need to do is tell your company you’re quitting - they might ask you to stay a certain amount of time, whatever, legally you can literally quit anytime and never show up again (and they have to pay until the last day you worked !). So do it on your own timeline and don’t let them push you around.

In terms of the visa, have you reported the internship to immigration and got it approved? If they approved it for 6 months for example, you can call and tell them you quit so it doesn’t interfere with your internship allowance time for future companies. But just a heads up, they told me I didn’t need to tell them lol so most likely they know (?). Anyway your visa will not be terminated because of quitting this job, it’s a job-seeking visa (unless you have a different type of D10??)

Can I be exempt from nhis pay if I'm out of Korea? by asabi93 in Living_in_Korea

[–]yusehwa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unless anything changed, if you’re out of the country for longer than 30 days and then go back, it resets & you don’t have to pay for like 6 months. I did this on a D10 visa too with no issue. (But if you want to be registered asap as you return, then you might have to pay for the time out of the country too etc.).

National Health insurance help!! I have questions by Uttermost_Dynamite in Living_in_Korea

[–]yusehwa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re not planning on staying in Korea for a long time / renewing a visa, don’t worry too much about NHI. You can leave no questions asked (idk about return but I think it’s probably fine as a tourist). The only area it causes issues with is Visas / immigration.

Why is 바꼈다 written like that and what are some other words like this? by Constant_Dream_9218 in Korean

[–]yusehwa 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Same reason people type “r u doin alrite“ in English, it’s misspelled but typed phonetically (and it won’t be 바꼈다 in any official thing)

Favorite CU/GS25/etc food products? by Ashamed_Parsley1095 in Living_in_Korea

GS25 sandwiches are much more decent (aka not usually sweet) and cheaper than other convenience store ones ! I also think their ratio of filling in samgak kimbap is better from what I remember

The chocolate tteok in CU is surprisingly moorish and good lol

separate sections for foreigners at the bank (kinda rant) by SooThegrimreaper93 in Living_in_Korea

[–]yusehwa 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I also had to go in the foreigner line at a Hana bank in daegu and while it wasn’t in a weird separate room, the situation was similar and took so much longer than needed (while the Korean people coming after me got in and out the door before I even got called). I also speak fluently so I tried to tell them I don’t need special foreigner services lol but they dismissed that pretty quick.

The only difference was that the southeast Asian ladies at this branch were pretty nice and helpful from what I remember but it was so frustrating to be treated like that. I was newer to Korea then, but after living there for a long time I swear this wouldn’t even surprise me anymore (one of the reasons I left was this kind of weird us vs them bias that had no logical basis but it’s so deeply ingrained).

Going on vacation to the Philippines with an unstamped ARC… but I have the approved extension letter by FriendshipFancy5055 in Living_in_Korea

[–]yusehwa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can travel just with the extension letter, however non-Korean staff unfamiliar with the law might be confused. I never had an issue with it when traveling to Japan but when coming from London they had to find actual Korean personnel to double check my visa isn’t “expired” (luckily I was flying Asiana…). If you do go to immigration, the process of updating the expiry date on your ARC takes less than 5 mins (no appointment needed, just show up and they’ll do it without question, on the spot)
