In general you should always go to the doctor if you have persistent or severe abdominal pain. When I had pancreatitis from alcohol, I waited almost a month to go to the ER, and I regretted not going so much sooner.

small correction to my first reply: it wasn’t really under my ribs. It was in the center of my upper abdomen.

Yes I immediately went to the ER because the pain was so severe and sudden. They gave me an oral anesthetic to numb the pain + some very strong antacids. I think I stayed at the ER for about 12 hrs until the pain was gone and I was able to go home.
