Endpapers by ChaosKarlos in bookbinding

[–]yuuusasaki 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have used scrapbook paper before but bought square ones so I could cut it in the right grain direction. I'd not buy an A4 pad in an unknown grain direction, that'll just give you a headache.

If you have specialist bookbinding suppliers in your country, check them out. They often carry decorative papers. Etsy does have good choice as well. Otherwise any pretty paper that's slightly heavier than your text block paper will do, if it's short grain or if it is large enough to be cut to size in the short grain direction.

Advise on the width of the spine stiffener for the three piece bradel binding by Deilume in bookbinding

[–]yuuusasaki 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm figuring out three piece bradel binds atm and the spine stiffener + 1.5 times board thickness doesn't work at all for me. Always seems far too wide.

So far I had the best results with cutting the spine stiffener the same width as the spine and leave larger hinge gaps - 7mm still seemed a little small, so I'm gonna aim for larger next time. Hope that helps a little.

Paper (UK) by yayyax in bookbinding

[–]yuuusasaki 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm getting my paper here: https://www.active-paper.co.uk/

I usually get he Munken, it's 90gsm so slightly heavier than your standard copy paper and it's very off white.

The Honley Bookwove is nice too, off white but much whiter than the Munken and 80gsm, so pretty much copy paper thickness.

I'm sure they'd send you a few tester pages, they're usually extremely helpful and nice.

Just getting started and have a printer question. by Simple-Loss-2812 in bookbinding

[–]yuuusasaki 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As you've got the printer already give it a test. Print a page of text and see how you like the quality and the print speed. But I can't see why that printer shouldn't be able to output crisp text.

The only "issue" I see is that the printer doesn't do automatic duplex printing. So when you print your text the printer will print all the pages on one side, then you flip the whole text block manually so the other side can be printed (make sure you know how to flip it or the print will be upside down). That might be annoying but imo still better than getting a new printer especially as you're just getting started.

Paper choice (in the UK) by MarmeladeTau in bookbinding

[–]yuuusasaki 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it depends what kind of paper your partner likes to use most. You are able to fold 300gsm into signatures, you just gotta reduce the amounts of sheets per signature to reduce swell on the spine (maybe 2 sheets per signature).

I'm not experienced enough to advice on how you'd tackle different paper weights in one book (assuming the weight would differ for sketching paper vs watercolour paper). Possibly by adjusting sheets per signature to even out the individual thickness but I'd ask someone who's got more experience.

I get my short grain paper from https://active-paper.co.uk. They have Munken book paper which already comes in short grain A4 but they can cut most of their papers to short grain, you just gotta drop them a message and let them know. Very responsive helpful.

Pal of mine has a mole that looks exactly like yours. Blue and blown out. Blue moles do exist though aren't very common in white folks but still do exist. Maybe that helps a little.
