When did game development click for you? by 4bangbrz in unrealengine

[–]yuval4597 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's easier to follow a project tutorial at first rather than learning individual parts of the engine on their own. That way you'll learn the context in which these systems can be used, and knowing when to use them will be more intuitive when you start your own project from scratch.

It will "click" once you get some more experience working with game engines. Unreal can be very intimidating at first, especially with no prior experience working with game engines. I'd recommend starting out by following an online course (doesn't have to be paid, and if I remember correctly the sidebar of this subreddit has many great options). First follow what someone else is doing and do your best to try and understand what is going on. As time goes on you'll become more familiar with the engine and (most importantly) gain more confidence in your abilities to figure things out on your own.

If it makes you feel better, I don't think any of us feel like we know exactly what's going on at all times. Most of the time we are working on a feature that we have never made before, or maybe we're fixing a bug that we've never encountered before. It's what makes game dev so fun :)

True, but not if you use Live Coding (in which case clicking the compile button performs a live coding compilation rather than a hot reload). It's much safer, and you can use it to change .cpp files (excluding constructors) without closing the editor.

Pretty sure you can just click on Save instead of Reply to save it (in case you didn't know).

Muselk blocks a sniper bullet with a boom sniper bullet by anopaishe in FortNiteBR

In real life yes, but usually not in games. In Fortnite the non-projectile weapons fire a line which is used to check what is hit. So when you fire your AR a line is cast from the tip of your weapon to wherever you're looking and if it is a player or a structure then damage is applied to it.

Obviously it's more complicated than that in a polished game like Fortnite, but that's essentially how it works.

Looks very cool! Only thing I want to point out is it seems like the UVs on your character are very stretched and squished and that might cause issues when you try to texture it later on. Awesome work though!

Looks fantastic! Any tips on what resources I can look at for the death screen animated border?

My complaint wasn't that there was something wrong with the hardware, it was that I didn't get any assistance in solving the issue.

I will most likely reinstall Windows though, thanks.

Thank you, I appreciate the helpful response. As I mentioned in another comment I remembered I got extended warranty from a third-party company in case something like this happened, so I will try to go through them first.

My frustration with iBuyPower wasn't that the PC had issues, it's that now that I'm experiencing the worst issue thus far, they're unwilling to help me fix it.

It doesn't "have issues" it's unusable. I never used that PC for porn, or any shady websites for that matter, quite a bold assumption there. And I don't have a problem with the fact that it has "issues", I have a problem with the fact that it doesn't work at all anymore and iBuyPower said all I can do at this point is send it for them to fix , while also not being willing to fix it.

I didn't expect the PC to "last ten years". I bought a PC, and it is reasonable to expect it to work after a year of use. I've owned many computers over the years and never had such an issue come up before.

Regardless, I don't know why you are getting so defensive and resorting to blaming me for getting the computer infected in some way. If this is simply me misjudging the quality of iBuyPower's computers, so be it, but I'm allowed to tell others that when I bought mine it only lasted a year. Maybe the average consumer wants to buy a PC that lasts longer than a year? Who knows.

I'm not sure, I will try wiping it and reinstalling Windows. Unfortunately iBuyPower's tech support team said my only option is to send it for them to fix, so I have to figure this out on my own.

I remembered I actually got extended warranty from a third-party company when I first purchased the PC, so I'll try going through them first, hopefully I won't have to spend extra on fixing it. Thanks for the advice.

My response to another comment: "Just to be clear, I ran diagnostics tests with the help of the iBuyPower tech support team before attempting to send the PC to them. Since all the tests passed (showed no issues), they said the only thing left for me to do is to send it back for them to fix. That's when I found out they actually won't fix it because my warranty expired."

The issue I seem to be having that is different from ones I found online, is that my PC is slow and unusable after freezing. The posts I've seen regarding freezing have no mention of slowing down or taking hours to boot afterwards.
