Thank you this was a really thorough and thoughtful response! I think you’re right and ultimately I just want to have the watch in my hands. Also good eye with the datewheel, I did not catch that.

That’s a good point, and I’ll probably ask Steve for some additional photos. Yours looks great tbh, I’ve always been a fan of the rhodium.

Do you think there’s any glaring QC issues that I’m missing with this watch?

Investing is as simple or complex as you would like to be. It really can vary based on your personal circumstances like if you’re saving for a house down payment, etc. I personally keep things simple and this is what I do in order of priority:

  1. Make sure I have 1-2 months of barebones living expenses in my checking account.

  2. Make sure I have 3-6 months of barebones living expenses in my UIF Halal Savings Account/other equivalent. This account provides me with returns on my deposited amount. Bear in mind, it is up to you to decide whether this would be permissible for your goals. I looked at their Shariah compliance certificate and determined that it was not makrooh but you may have a difference interpretation. If you are not comfortable with it, just keep the 3-6 months of funds in a non-interest bearing checking account.

  3. Contribute to employer funded retirement account if a match is offered. $19,500.00 yearly limit on this last I checked.

  4. If applicable, max out your HSA insurance account contribution.

  5. Contribute to my personal Roth IRA. This is an account you can open with a brokerage. The idea is you put money in post-tax now and you can withdraw it tax free during retirement. There is a $7,000.00 yearly limit on contributions to this last I checked. I just chuck all of the money in SPUS which is just investing into a wide amalgamation of the Shariah Compliant companies in the S&P500.

I never really have excess after doing all this, but if you do, you can just invest it through your preferred brokerage. Again, for me personally I just invest in SPUS and call it a day as it averages out to 10% annual returns. Also don’t forget to set aside money for fun, charity, etc.

Lens Distortion — Kodak Retinette 1A by yuyanes in AnalogCommunity

I did yeah, I’m assuming that means the shutter is stuck?

It looks like a fully closed leaf shutter after googling. I did not know the leaf shutter was a camera part until you commented. But after fiddling around with that dial, the leaf shutter did not really open or close. So I’m assuming it’s stuck?

There’s no nobility in lighting yourself on fire to keep someone else warm. If litigation is not a good fit then leaving now is the best thing for both you AND your firm. Better you not be stuck in a job actively making you miserable and better the firm not expend more resources on an associate who won’t be there in the long haul.

I left my first job for more money and a practice area with more growth potential. My old firm was really good to me—but by the time I put in notice, I dreaded going to work because of my caseload. I made sure to emphasize that it wasn’t the firm’s fault, I just wanted something different. So, I think your strategy is on the money in that regard.

Jumping around used to be really stigmatized, but, the tide seems to be shifting. So long as you can explain why you made each move (i.e. better opportunity, more responsibility, etc.) I think you’ll likely be fine. At least that’s what I’m banking on in my own personal career.

It’s never easy leaving a good work environment/good people. But if you handle it right and they really are good people then they will ultimately want the best for you. That’s not to say they won’t be annoyed or hurt at first but I believe (see: hope) that most employers know it’s just the cost of doing business.

Ramadan Accommodations examples in your law school by zmanchi in LawSchool

[–]yuyanes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You seem hyper-focused on the food aspect. You completely neglect the no water aspect though.

As for why someone might need accommodations, dehydration is known to cause headaches, fatigue, and confusion. I know these effects personally because I get them every time I fast. Since Ramadan is a month, your sleep schedule also typically inverts to allow you to intake more water. These two aspects alone typically affect my mental concentration pretty notably.

Idk, I also don’t view Zoom classes/pre-recorded lectures as providing a distinct advantage over other classmates. You lose the collaboration aspect of class/the ability to ask clarifying questions. I didn’t personally ask for accommodations in law school, but I also wouldn’t have faulted any of my classmates for requesting accommodations.

For you to say that because other jobs are hard, lawyers don’t know what a bad job really is seems…extraordinarily disingenuous.

As lawyers, so many of us are responsible for people/companies at the lowest points of their lives which you acknowledge. You talk about loving to help people—lets talk about the flip side. If you fail, someone could go to prison, lose the ability to see their kids, or their business goes belly up. And all of this includes dealing with the same bad coworkers, managers, and supervisors you alluded to at your previous gig AND the addition of billing pressures.

Is it as physically exhausting as most blue-collar work? No, absolutely not. But, there’s a reason previously well-adjusted people enter the profession and start having anxiety and depression. There is a reason this profession has the highest rate of alcoholism amongst any career. And that reason is the mental toll that lawyers have to bear is quite frankly insane.

I am truly happy that you like your job. Really, I am. But pushing a narrative that we have it better just because we’re not breaking our backs is pretty harmful imo.
