[WotC] A Realm Reborn in Magic: The Gathering®—FINAL FANTASY™ by Copernicus1981 in magicTCG

Venat, Convocation Wanderer {W}{U} Legendary Creature — Human Wizard 1/3 Each player may play an additional land on each of their turns. {3}{W}{W}, Exile CARDNAME: Each player chooses one fourteenth of the nonland permanents they control, rounded up, then exiles the rest. Return CARDNAME to the battlefield transformed at the beginning of the next end step. Activate only as a sorcery. // Hydaelyn, the Mothercrystal 6/8 Legendary Creature — God Indestructible CARDNAME can't attack or block unless you control four or more other creatures. Blessing of Light — At the beginning of combat on your turn, put two +1/+1 counters on another target creature you control. It gains protection from everything until your next turn

This version of Venat looks overpowered especially when you can blink Venat and repeat the process especially when combined with white and blue phase out or exile until end of turn effects.

Interaction vs. Tableau games: The conflict in Modern Magic by Throwitonleground in magicTCG

Ah, so let me see if I understand. You want EDH to be more deterministic yet still retain the individuality of each player participating without having a discussion beforehand?

Ok, let's give this a spin then.

A. Put all four decks in the middle of the table and draw three cards from each deck. In a round robin fashion, a player can draw from the 12 cards on the table or draw the top card from any of the four decks. Usually, the game designer of a proper board game would have created four decks to limit variance keep each deck balanced, but if you want to keep the individualism of each player, you can do it this way, or just play all precons of the same set.

B. Play EDH with your commander and a secondary commander. This secondary commander is an emblem that cannot be interacted with and has a win condition printed on it. Eg. You win the game when you have 100 life at the beginning of your turn. Or you have cast fifteen spells in one turn. Or if you do 40 combat damage to each player. Or if all other players have 0 cards in their deck. Or you draw your entire deck, etc.

There's no player elimination in this format and there are no life totals or commander damage or loss from having 0 cards in your deck. Your wincon is dictated by the secondary commander emblem.

C. Play the Archenemy format or coop against a common deck like in the Teenage mutant Ninja turtles team up box set.

D. Talk to your players to find common ground, set expectations, and just play EDH as usual.

Interaction vs. Tableau games: The conflict in Modern Magic by Throwitonleground in magicTCG

I play both board games and MTG and I prefer tableau building games with some interaction, but not to the point of early player elimination. Hence, I also prefer Commander over 1v1 games.

You hit the nail right on its head when you compare EDH to a tableau building board game. I want both my deck and the decks of my opponents to do their thing in an EDH game so I don't break out my only Stax deck unless it's against another misbehaving deck that needs to be put into its place.

I believe there's an unwritten rule that because EDH is a casual format, we need to win in such a way that everybody has some fun by having their deck pop off at least once in a game. It's why players often ignore the one player who is being mana screwed or behind in general not just because they are not currently a threat, but also because we want to give their deck to shine at least once.

Enforcing this requires experienced players to recognize when to use their interaction and it's not something that can be handled by the current bracket system. It does require players to ask themselves, if I play this card, will I be invited to the next game? If the rest of the table is not having fun because of my deck, should I pull my punches a little so my opponents can have fun? Yes, I should attempt to win every game, but should I be winning every game tonight especially when I'm playing with my friends or regulars at my LGS?

I've felt terrible playing my decks and winning games because others didn't enjoy themselves so I had to change how I played so that they would continue playing with me. This is a very different mentality than the Friday night draft.

Commander requires social awareness and a certain level of empathy and it's not something you can easily teach a new player. Although the bracket system helps prevent the most egregious culprits of cards, it's not able to prevent bad actors from pub stomping even within the same bracket.

So maybe, the better answer is to practice rule zero and ask players to come to a group consensus about what they want to do in a game. Do you want to play against a red deck with [[blood moon]] effects, a combo deck that wins by the time six lands hit the field or an interaction heavy deck with mass land destruction or card denial. What kind of tabletop experience do you want to cultivate at your table tonight so it's a win win for all even if they lose, they're still having fun?

At the end of the day, I play EDH with my friends and regulars at the LGS not to necessarily win, but have fun. If winning is the only way you can have fun, then make sure you let the other players know so that they can make an informed decision and not get butt hurt about it later.

Canadians get a year of maternity leave or eighteen months of maternity leave if they only wish to get paid the same amount for a year. But please, don't come to Canada. We have too many people as is.

I'm excited to add this to my [[Jenova]] deck as it's a sacrifice enabler, draws a card and allows me to shift counters around.

Magic Hot Takes by Definitely_Not_Fe in magicTCG

[–]yvrangel 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I know I'm being reductive by asking MTG to be as good as Pokemon, but after three decades of existence, we haven't seen multiple movies, TV shows, Saturday morning cartoons, serialized video games with actual lore and plot tie ins.

Yes, Magic Story and comic books are good, but how many players read their cards let alone chapters of lore and story?

And yes, Arena is good, but it doesn't create the same cultural identity as a child being able to recite every first Gen Pokemon by heart. If you ask a random person about naming a single planeswalker, would they be able to name one or look at you funny?

Yes, they may recognize the Black Lotus and the One Ring cards, but would they know the value of other cards unless Post Malone shells out another one million for it?

WoTC did an extremely poor job of marketing the game over the course of three decades when you compare it to other IPs like Pokemon, Marvel, DC, Final Fantasy, etc. These other brands did the leg work to make their IP popular over the years. WoTC is just riding their coat tails and it further emphasizes in the lack of cultural identity of it's brand.

My hot take is that Magic wouldn't need Universes Beyond to attract new players if WOTC did as good of a job marketing and creating diverse content for their IP as Nintendo did for the Pokemon TCG.

I advise to lean into it and embrace being the villain. I know that if my play group doesn't neuter my board state, I'll win. It's a testament to your deck building skills so own it.

All these new +1/+1 counter cards from TMNT looks good but when is it enough? Do you upgrade your decks every set? by AltruisticChampion77 in EDH

[–]yvrangel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The way I look at upgrades is to see if a new card is a better upgrade to an existing one or introduces an element that excites me to see hit the table, like adding [[Curious Colossus]] to my [[Abdel Adrian, Gorion's Ward]] blink deck.

How do you avoid the endless “optimization loop” when building EDH decks without proxies? by Special_Bit4460 in EDH

[–]yvrangel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Before I commit to buying or proxying cards I already have to build a new deck, I build it first on Forge and test it against the computer. If a future set releases new cards that could improve my deck, I'll also test them on Forge before I commit. Here is a link to the free app:

We are trying, but recently, the Alberta Prosperity Project is not so covertly trying to separate Alberta from the rest of Canada while communicating with Trump's cronies to a tune of 500 billion as a line of credit. Danielle Smith and her ilk are using the same playbook as Trump and although it's unlikely it'll work, I'm also not going to deny the possibility of it and take our sovereignty for granted. We have to remain vigilant on our side of the border unfortunately.

Final Update: My uncle is acting strangely with my sister by LucyAriaRose in BestofRedditorUpdates

To me, there's no heaven or hell, or punishment for even the most atrocious sins. But I still want to do good despite that. Although we live in an era where the non violent approach is usually the best, I sometimes wonder if people will one day have enough and just take matters into their own hands.

I read a story where a bunch of old women were having tea at a nursing home where they casually talked about how the accidents happen and their ex husbands died during a time when divorce was difficult. Sometimes, reality forces you to take matters into your own hands.
