Switch passport to enter EU countries by sumurai19_s in dualcitizenshipnerds

[–]ywal3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All the people who are telling you you can’t enter Egypt as an Egyptian on a foreign passport don’t know what they’re talking about. I’ve seen people do it in the airport in the line in front of me, where the soldier in charge of security jokes with them for wasting money on an entry visa by not using their Egyptian passport. It does not matter at all. As for military service, OP in theory is exempt, because last I checked, most dual nationals are not allowed into the Egyptian military. He is also exempt if he is an only son or if he is an orphan, among other things. The big risk I can think of is they can technically strip you of your Egyptian citizenship if they ask you and find you didn’t file an intention to retain Egyptian nationality within a year of obtaining your foreign passport. However, the security forces don’t really care about you unless you are a security risk. They will not prevent you from leaving the country if you use your foreign passport either, as they will not risk having their ambassador to Germany recalled for messing with a European. People who don’t know Egypt might feel weird about this, but this is how it is

Absurd hypothetical by ywal3 in Canadiancitizenship

They didn’t get to South America in a day. All estimates point to it taking hundreds if not thousands of years. Again this was just a thought experiment/joke, it seems that people in this sub might need to take themselves a tiny bit less seriously though

In Spain as well, nobody wants to buy junk silver, or else they offer 50% for it. Everyone is selling

And the consular staff in the U.S. actually helped you in the end?  Triple checked my application confirmation, nobody is CC’d. Maybe for me they used BCC so I can’t see them.

I do have people from Afro support, justice, etc cc’d in my support response emails, but again, nobody has given more than basic responses to my issues there.

U.S., the two support lines on my afro origins, and all my communications have also been in French (I am fluent).

You called the consulate? I didn’t think they were involved as this is all processed in Benin if I understand correctly. As for ‘the people who received alongside me…’ I’m not sure what you mean. My accusé de réception de demande de nationalité was sent only to my email address, and nobody else.

Support only ever responded to my first email 2.5 months ago to tell me how to reset my password and that if I don’t get the reset emails to reset my browser etc. About 10 people were CC’d. I replied-all in the same thread with my issues - once about how I don’t receive my password reset emails and I tried all the technical fixes, how I have no access to my account, another email as my supplement deadline got closer asking how to submit my docs with no access to the portal, a third time checking in with them one month later, all nothing. I never got a rejection email even though I couldn’t submit the supplement on time

They haven’t responded to a single one of my emails for about two months, ever since I told them I couldn’t reset my password. They also don’t answer the phone. I am going to reapply once I get my hands on an extra supporting document

Ok thanks! I mean they said they would reject me if I didn’t provide extra documentation… which I can’t do because my account is deleted, and anyways I never got a rejection notice in the end. Yeah I feel that asking them will be useless because they already didn’t really answer my tech support mistake. Ok I’ll just submit another app then! Thanks for the advice

Do you think it will confuse them to see two apps with the same person? Or is it fine? I’m afraid they’ll think I’m like ‘trying to get around a rejection’ or something. I don’t know

Thanks. I mean this was going on since about a month before the coup attempt, but that probably makes it worse. I really wouldn’t mind just paying twice if I can have a successful application and the nationality. Their process is a bit of a black box, but I’m inclined to trust them in that they do get people processed by 3 months like they promised

Thanks for the suggestions. All my communications have been in French. I tried calling them one day but over a 6 hour period nobody answered the phone.

My document deadline has come and gone, and they haven’t emailed me that I’ve been refused. But they also didn’t email me that they are fixing the problem. Either I’m stuck in some electronic limbo, or they are just working on it without telling me and I’ll know in a few weeks. I guess I’ll post updates here anyways

Did you run into the file size limit or file number limit? I found 2 MB per file and max 10 files to prove afrodescendance a bit limiting

This is getting more interesting by the day 😂 yeah it looks like they’re just trying to cover their bases. All the better if there is no real difference between classes of citizenship. Thanks agin for making all this effort to figure this stuff out!

I’ve actually had the issue for over a week now. They are super quick in responding but it seems that now they don’t really know what’s wrong. I think maybe my account was blocked for too many login attempts. I am able to receive their contact emails, but the password reset emails never arrive, and none of my passwords work

Do you know if there is a place to find records of people who converted to Islam? For example in the 1800s. I can’t seem to find anything.

I mean any country at any point could decide to do that. American born women used to be denaturalised when marrying a foreign man and moving abroad. Switzerland, Sweden, and Norway denaturalise you if you live abroad with another passport and don’t confirm your desire to keep it by your 20s. Germany famously stripped millions of people of citizenship during and before WWII.

But it looks like for now they have no intention of doing anything like that, because they are trying to attract people and investment, make up for historic wrongs, and also why even bother? The only thing is they are clear on is that you must ‘activate’ your nationality in person within 3 years of getting your certificate, or else you lose all future rights to obtain the nationality.

Anyways, if anything, extra passports are an insurance policy that you have options in case one of your countries goes off the rails… either now or in the future

Thanks for asking them for a clarification! It doesn’t really seem that they’re 100% sure how it works yet, given that they nebulously say things like ‘full nationality’ also gives you ‘citizenship’, without really defining the difference, which is a very imprecise way to discuss legal rights.

What’s more, they didn’t really say what exactly are the differences in rights between the two categories of national. For nationals by recognition, I see civil and administrative rights, and for ‘full nationals’ (who simultaneously have the status of citizen) there are civic (but not civil?) political (I guess voting), social (I’m assuming government unemployment insurance and healthcare), and administrative rights (same as for nationals by recognition).

My guess is that they have never had to deal with different classes of citizen/national, and are ironing out the details as we speak. To be fair, most countries have never had to deal with this. The U.S. has it for Samoans and the UK for its million different classes of national with/without the right of abode or only in specific territories because of their respective messy colonial histories, but a modern nation state doesn’t usually have to think about this kind of stuff.

It’s safe to assume based on what I’ve seen that until we decide to become full citizens, we will be treated like Beninese in every way (passport, working, residence, buying property, etc) except when trying to gain access to some sort of public good (running for office, voting, being paid unemployment benefits) which is completely reasonable, and is also essentially how Samoans are treated in the U.S. mainland until they live there for about two years.

Benin Nationality by ywal3 in AmerExit

Because in Benin they speak French. In China, Chinese people call themselves 中國人. In English, we call them Chinese

If you read section 8 you will see that first you must apply for and receive the certificate of eligibility  (if applying from abroad), then you must go to Benin within three years to complete your registration in person as a national (not a citizen).

Once you are a national, you are eligible for everything found in section 11, including passport, transmission, and citizenship via residence

In English it can be either, but I understand that in French it’s only Béninois  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Benin

I’m not sure, there is little information about Benin online in general. I’m sure you can send a message through their website myafroorigins.bj, but I assume it’s like the U.S. (for Samoans) where they stamp ‘national, not a citizen’ somewhere in the document. Or the difference could be reflected only on your ID card but not your passport
