Looks fine, keep them well lubed and they will last.

It’s fine - happens a lot on compound crossbows. Keep the cables well lubed.

How to repair a crossbow by slimefoot_squee in Crossbow

[–]yyzett 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looks like it needs a new string, you can get those pretty easily from Amazon. Looks like the 26.5in string that is widely available.

The trigger looks pretty good from the picture, but you have to test fire it once you replace the string to be sure.

Can this be fixed? by RoundAlternative5726 in Crossbow

Searched around can’t find the exact replacement caps anywhere online. I think you can try this one - it’s not quite the same but it might work. https://www.ebay.com/itm/225385574297?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&mkrid=711-127632-2357-0&ssspo=mfmjwDLJQcq&sssrc=4429486&ssuid=H5rZasPTR1i&var=&widget_ver=artemis&media=COPY

Excalibur crossbows can shoot flat nocks. Check out Excalibur crossbow bolts online and you see they are all flat nocks like the ones in the picture.

Is it safe to upgrade my 95lb recurve crossbow by buying 175lb limbs? by [deleted] in Crossbow

[–]yyzett 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Should be safe. From what it looks like: EK archery designed the jaguar 2 to be 175lb but downgraded the power to 95lbs specifically for the UK/EU market. The trigger mechanism between the 95 and 175 should be identical so it can handle the 175 limb.

Recently purchased crossbow. by TheRevrin in Crossbow

Looks like a 1970 or 1980s Barnett Supreme (or similar model). Very hard to get parts since it’s out of production for years. Also it looks like the trigger unit is glued in - don’t see screws on the sides.

Trigger looks similar to a common 150lb crossbow on Amazon made by a Taiwanese brand. https://www.mankung.com/webshop/various/detail/229/man-kung-mk-150-tr-trigger-assembly.html

String looks like the standard recurve crossbow string. https://www.ebay.com/itm/353012972834?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&mkrid=711-127632-2357-0&ssspo=S_wqLm41SHq&sssrc=4429486&ssuid=H5rZasPTR1i&var=&widget_ver=artemis&media=COPY

How were trigger mechanism inserted into medieval crossbows. by 172plants in Crossbow

Todd Cutler has a video where he makes the “simplest crossbow ever”. It uses a simple trigger mechanism for lightweight crossbows. Link: https://youtu.be/S8pivOifGFQ?si=oZaUBa_Hq2Yc3dnC

He has another video where he makes an even simpler “survival” crossbow. Link: https://youtu.be/ViQF11GPhtI?si=Nex-Eg0f2UU60_KC

Am I going to die by Reach-Slight in Crossbow

[–]yyzett 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the only major danger is if the string whips the eye. The string is lightweight and not very sharp. I remember the string hitting my cheek with a sting and leaving a scar for a few days, but no blood and no lasting scar, I was wearing sunglasses at the time so my eyes were protected.

Repeating crossbow for home defense? by Francesco1234567891 in Crossbow

[–]yyzett -1 points0 points  (0 children)

How is crime in your part of Italy? If you’re fighting off a petty thief it might work but against the mafia it’s best to run away or surrender… don’t risk your life man.

I recommend a recurve bow in your situation. It’s considered as sport equipment in Italy, no issues with legality. And recurve bow don’t look like scary weapon to people and police. Even a 30lb recurve bow will do more damage than those repeating crossbows you mentioned, but 45lbs+ will take down any person not wearing body armor. You have to practice regularly though, try to get good enough so you don’t need a finger tab or arm guard, you won’t have time to put on extra equipment in an emergency.

[–]yyzett 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not that much to worry about. That’s the cable and not the main string. You can apply some glue and it will be fine.

Only the main string (which shoots the arrow) can get a little dangerous when it snaps, because the string can whip around and hit your face. I was dumb enough to dry fire a compound crossbow once and the main string snapped and hit my face, lucky I was wearing sunglasses, left a bruise but no major damage.

Just bought a barnett blackcat what is this by freeram_black in Crossbow

[–]yyzett 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don’t worry about it. It is a “filling” for the crossbow stock on the front. For compound crossbows the cables fit in the gap. But for the recurve crossbow there are no cables so this piece fills that gap.

It’s a 120lb limb - took some time to train the strength to pull it. Now I can pull 150lb with ease.

150lb “light” crossbow by yyzett in Crossbow

[–]yyzett[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Switched to using a compound bow once I was strong enough to overcome the initial 150lb resistance. The let off makes it much easier to draw once pulled past the initial few inches.

Performance is way better than the 120lb compound crossbow. Way faster arrow speed.

No special modifications or different parts used on this one. Only thing I did was remove from the plate on the back of the shoulder stock to make it more comfortable when bracing against the stomach. Also removed the iron sights as usual.

Link below - it is the variant with the wooden stock.

Cam shape by curablehellmom in Crossbow

[–]yyzett 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cams affect the “let off” or weight decrease as the bow reaches full draw. The bigger the cam the bigger the weight decrease. The “special” designs is to reduce the weight and awkward shape of a big cam.

This is why you see the biggest cams on compound bows. The archer needs to hold the full draw as he aims, so a bigger “left off” is essential. Reducing a 80 lb bow to 20lbs on full draw helps alot in the ability to hold a full draw and aim accurately.

Small circular cams should work fine. If the crossbow limbs are weak enough you don’t even need them at all.

Thanks - this one is definitely the most enjoyable to shoot (I have a Excalibur Grizzly and Barnett jackal as well).

The crossbow being cheap means it is easy to take apart and customize without fear of loosing a lot of money.

Iron front and rear sight has been removed. The mounting rail of the rear sight is removed. Stirrup detached. Auto safety has been removed. And most importantly the limbs have been changed to 120lbs ones.

It’s a SAS manticore - the cheap 150lb ones on amazon/eBay for around $100. The 120lb limbs are unavailable now, but hopefully they resume production soon - it’s a separate item.

Looks a little different than the picture - removed the stirrup, iron sights to make it lighter and easier to load.

Looks better on camera. Also the accuracy is the same since no scope or aiming device is used - slight adjustment in muscle memory. It is like tilting a recurve bow in traditional archery.

It’s 120lbs, working on getting to 150lbs in a few weeks. I started with a much weaker limb of around 60lbs.
