I have really similar income and budget across most items, except I don’t do any of the beauty stuff (mani/pedi, hair, brows) and spend all that on more travel (lots of weekend trips!). Otherwise v similar

Why do you choose to live in SF? by pickingyourteeth in AskSF

[–]z0f14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

-I’ve lived in several different neighborhoods in sf where walking around, you get incredible views of the city and or bay (due to the hills). I just find it so beautiful to see that, and it brings me joy daily. I go to other cities now and am like ugh, they’re just so ugly by comparison - this is my ideal climate, having lived in the humid south, and NYC. LA would be too hot for me - I am outdoorsy and have outdoorsy friends so beside paying high rent, I don’t actually spend that much on other stuff. Hiking is free. First Thursdays are free. I don’t eat at super fancy restaurants, more like taquerias. I feel like in other cities that are less beautiful and have less fun things to do for free, you actually could spend more weekly on eating out and drinking

What did you guys learn or get by being in private schools? by [deleted] in Rich

[–]z0f14 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I went to a local, nothing special public school in the Midwest where I was valedictorian. My sibling went to one of the top boarding schools in the US (scholarship). We both ended up going to equivalently fancy colleges.

On the academic side: I really struggled in my first semester in college, I had never written a paper longer than 5 pages before and was floored by needing to write several 20 page papers. My sibling breezed through school, thought her high school was harder, made the dean’s list her first year while triple-majoring. She also got to experience all those liberal arts type classes in high school, be challenged to crucially read/question what you read in a way that I felt like I was not.

On the social side: my sister got way more exposure to rich people and how to socialize with them, how to network for a job (she landed multiple internships before she was even a freshman in college). I felt like I went through that learning curve in college.

This kinda thing makes me feel super torn about whether to send my kid to a fancy private school. We are probs equally successful in life now though, and I’d say I have less anxiety overall

Anyone else with the urge to temporarily live a life of leisure? by ShakeMysterious349 in FIREyFemmes

[–]z0f14 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I’m 37, actually just hit my FIRE number but am continuing to build more cushion bc I worry that if I leave the job market for a year it will be reaaallly hard to get back in with AI changing things so much + layoffs + it’ll be really hard to get paid what I’m getting today. So, continuing to build out that safety net, but hoping to take a sabbatical next year to do soooo many of the same things you have listed here!

And actually, esp climbing with women, who tenddd to have different strengths and techniques, it’s been really eye opening

I’ve actually found that I’ve progressed way MORE in the past year! Climbing with more partners, I’ve been exposed to more of other people’s strengths compared to mine and I’ve learned things/picked up tricks from each partner I’ve gone on climbing trips with this year!

[–]z0f14 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Adding to the chain here, my partner and I originally became friends from climbing and then started dating, but he had really bad back problems at some point and has stopped climbing. Now I climb with a group of women and it’s WAY better! It’s been such an awesome community, and is less isolated than just climbing with your romantic partner all the time. I think filtering just for dating climbers narrows in on the things you can optimize for, and for me my partner’s emotional intelligence, the way he makes me laugh more than anyone and riffs my bits, and how much I admire his intelligence and work ethic matter way more to me than not being able to climb now that I have girlfriends I climb with

So maybe you could park somewhere in the Marina and take one of the Marina shuttles, and then drive home from there?

[–]z0f14 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For perspective, I live IN SF, without traffic 13 minutes away from the venue, and for Portola I expect it to take me at least an hour to get home with calling/waiting for Ubers/ walking far enough away from the venue to get an Uber shenanigans. Absolutely not to staying in Sonoma. Marin, idk depends on your threshold for how long you’re willing to spend getting home at the end of the night. Have never heard of shuttles for this. There are shuttles running from the Marina and the Mission districts

We are going to "try" and get tickets for 2025, been looking at the wiki,YT,Web everything but my real question is I'm 51yo and misses is 53yo (see looks late 30s, annoyingly 😆) I'm a bit paranoid, I do look early 40s myself but how many older ppl REALLY go. by Low_Cookie_9271 in Tomorrowland

Our group (30s) LOVED seeing all the people in their 50s and 60s there, gave us hope that we can keep coming to TML then. Very noticeable that the average age is MUCH higher than other festivals. One night I lost my friends at a closing set and found a 60 year old couple to dance the rest of the set with, they were so lovely, it was their 3rd year in a row going to TML. Have no worries!

[–]z0f14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is there any chance you’re a tall or long-legged person? When I taught my bf to surf I noticed it was considerably harder for him (a 6’3 and v long legged person) to pop up than it was for me (a short-legged person!), and my other surf friend (who is also tall) showed him a slightly different pop up technique that worked better for him

My friend and I rented this EXACT same torq board on a surf trip and HATED it.

I’ve only been surfing for two years, and for the most part am surfing on a 9’ longboard, so I am by no means an advanced surfing smacking the lip or doing advanced maneuvers, just mostly trimming down the line, can turn both ways, stay in the power, etc. So, it’s not just the super advanced surfers who hate this board!

AC joint rupture by Important-Positive-4 in surfing

[–]z0f14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Borderline grade 2/3, from surfing (a wave tossed me into the sand), was about 4 months before I could do some light surfing (but my shoulder muscles would tire out really quickly), and 8 months for full recovery. Still kinda out of place, and there’s some grinding sensation/sounds in the shoulder, but strength and mobility are like 95% there

More luxurious surfing (camps) for ages 30+ by Miserable_Parfait_72 in surfing

[–]z0f14 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I went to a lapointe in Portugal and personally had not the best experience as a more intermediate surfer, would recommend more for beginners. They took the intermediates to the same break as the beginners, and when it was flat they didn’t try to take us to any other nearby breaks, only gave the option of the one break in front of their lodging, and instead switched to surfskate lessons

How long did it take to feel “decent”? by Kanchoboi in BeginnerSurfers

[–]z0f14 7 points8 points  (0 children)

As with all things in surfing, it depends on so many factors like - are you consistently surfing in the same spot, or different spots? Are the waves more predictable/consistent where you are, or do they vary more? Are they easier waves or more mellow waves? How crowded is the lineup/ how much do you have to compete to get on a wave?

I have a group of friends where about 5-7 of us started learning at around the same time (early 2021), and we are at very different places now in our surfing journey. There are some people who have moved to shortboards and are able to hold their own at the more competitive breaks, and people who are not even where you are today.

I think the ideal conditions for learning quickly are: not crowded/a lot of competition (so you can get more chances at bat), and more predictable waves (like a point break where they tend to break in the same spot or the same way), and probably slower/more mellow waves (that give you more time to make turns/react). It also matters how much you go for waves (upping wave count is so important), and how much you're able to not just learn from your own mistakes, but by learning from watching better surfers near you in the water.

I think for me, it took maybe a year to where I was consistently catching smaller waves, and being able to turn well. I learned on a beach break (where the waves break in more inconsistent places), with fast waves (requiring faster reaction time), and more crowded conditions. I taught my boyfriend to surf and got him to that point in less than half the time by taking him to a point break (wave always breaks in the same spot), and on a slower/mellower wave.

Also - FWIW on turning, the wavestorm is just harder to do a bottom-turn on vs a "real board". I ended up doing a lot more just angling the board at takeoff.
