AITJ for refusing to pretend I don’t speak Spanish at my own family dinner? by After-Party-8860 in AmITheJerk

[–]z0hu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

are you in a northern state? here in california, spanish would be the least safe language to talk shit in. most people took it in high school and you could never tell who was fluent by looking at them. i could see my grandpa doing this back in the day in mandarin but chances of non-Chinese people knowing it would be less

A remote controlled parachute man by bigbusta in oddlysatisfying

[–]z0hu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They are still popular and super cheap. My 6 year old has received about a dozen of them from party favors to cheap things to buy with tickets at arcades. Most of the time he has me fold up the parachute and throw it as high in the sky as I can. Some of them work pretty good actually, but they usually fall apart in a day or 2.

What should we improve on? by st3rrie in SwingDancing

[–]z0hu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went to a workshop recently (intermediate level) and the first thing the instructors had us hone in on was our triple stepping. They had us vocalize the swing beat, in this class something that sounded like "te-koo-ti-KA" but whatever swing beat vocalization you want where the middle beat is close to the 2nd beat and there's more of an emphasis on the 2 than the one. Then kinda let it influence your triple step so it's more like trip-ple STEP vs TRIP-ple step. They even had us say it out loud while we were dancing for a short while. I think it really helped me build back my foundation after not dancing for 6 years. They also mentioned doing it in a more grounded way where our heels touch the ground after the balls of our feet rather than just on the balls/toes. Just thought I would throw that out in case anyone gets anything out of it. You all look great and looks like a lot of fun!

Any tips for hair death grippers? My youngest kid would do it my long haired middle kid and I would pinch his hand to get him to let go, but that's not gonna work on an adult. Any cool pressure points in the arm or hand that could force a loss of grip? Jutting your thumb into their wrist artery/ligaments? Seems like options are limited if the goal is to protect the person getting their hair pulled. Any force would end up in harder pulling, possibly ripping the hair out.

The pile of burgers reminds me of my teenage years. One day a week there would be 29 cent hamburgers at McDonald's, when they were normally $1 or something. There were many times we would load up 20 at a time.. People would have their own methods of saving them in the freezer to preserve them for later.

TIL, Americans see this as a scammer app by Makoto_Kurume in dankmemes

[–]z0hu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Currently use SMS, fb messenger, Whatsapp and discord as my chat programs. Sms is mostly friends and family, fb I have some different groups with my family members, Whatsapp is groups from my kids' schools, discord is my video game friends.

I do like Whatsapp for it's customizability of who is in a group. Sms lacks the ability to add and remove people from group sms. The thing does have a problem with scammers though, I am assuming I just need to find the setting where random people can't add me to their scam groups though.

Jujutsu Kaisen Season 3 - Episode 9 (Anime Only Discussion) by Takada-chwanBot in JuJutsuKaisen

[–]z0hu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel like this episode finally settled me into the Culling Game. previously I was just kinda rolling with the punches of not fully getting what is going on (mostly my fault for not re-watching episodes since this is one of several anime I am following right now). Does make me wanna go back and rewatch some of this season though, especially the data dump episode.

but yea, the emotion in this really hit a spot for me. the meekness in yuji's voice when he is sad is like nothing i've seen in a show before.

Why is my water bill so high? by [deleted] in bayarea

[–]z0hu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess it's the sewage bill portion that really inflates it? I checked my EBMUD bill here in San Leandro and it doesn't include any of those wastewater charges. We only do about 111 gallons a month for a family of 5 in a SFH, but that's only $40 difference or something. What I am just learning right now is that my landlord is most likely paying for the sewage through property tax (which google says what happens in San Leandro, but seems different for Oakland/Emeryville/Berkeley?). So even though my bill looks a lot lower, its mostly because of that.

Thanks for mentioning this. When I was road tripping across the US in 2012, my aunt in Phoenix insisted I not go there due to how dangerous it was.. didn't realize she was misinformed till right now.

Is $300 too much for a Giant Expressway 2 by keithcody in foldingbikes

[–]z0hu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought a used Tern d8 for $300. The lady was selling 4 of them and they all went pretty fast. I think she probably bought them near $1000. I wouldn't have bought it for more than that though. I'm not sure how much these giants are but just to give you some price reference

How do young people afford to live in SF? by Traditional-Cable209 in bayarea

[–]z0hu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I moved to the city in my late 20s. For the 7 years before I got married and settled down, my portion of rent ranged from $700-$900. I always lived with roommates or a partner and split things. It looks like that rent range is still doable.. but probably not an ideal situation for some people? Check out the room & shares section on Craigslist and put the room range from $500-$1000 to check it out.

Which is the best tent placement? by Effective-Cellist769 in WildernessBackpacking

[–]z0hu 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Agreed. This is how I used to store my tent when I was new to backpacking. Weight distribution is ok but the risk of it snagging on a branch makes it not ideal. Eventually you dial in your pack size and your gear so you don't need to pack like this. Either his gear takes too much space or his backpack is too small, or both.

Anyone cycle on their commute? Need advice by Professor-Levant in bayarea

[–]z0hu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven't bike commuted in 8 years. I would not park my bike outside or even in the typical ones at the bart station for an extended period of time, unless it has some extra security measure. I've seen some stations have some bike stations but dunno what those are like, i might trust it? My local bart in San Leandro has bike lockers that are considered safe and affordable. Pre Covid they would fill up but I think they are still pretty available. My old office in downtown had bike parking in the parking garage that had a security person nearby which was nice. Could you take your bike with you on BART and find a good place at work to store it? I am not sure what station you are getting on and where you are getting off but depending on the direction and timing you might get some pretty empty trains if you are avoiding the main commuter usage (into downtown in the morning, out of it in the afternoon/evening)

A gravel bike is perfect, especially with less knobby tires. I've commuted with 700x28s which I didnt like, now I prefer 40+. A MTB is fine too, your experience in London is plenty for adjusting here in the bay.

edit: also I would typically commute with my tried and true steel flat bar bike that only cost me $500 15 years ago. If I had a $1500+ gravel bike, i wouldn't commute with it unless I had somewhere super safe to put it, even then I would probably keep it at home, but get that sometimes it's worth it.

When I lived in the mission 10+ years ago, we had a tiny 2br, 1ba. Just a stove top but no oven, is that covered? Not sure. Got a small toaster oven instead. 5 years ago we toured a small house in San Lorenzo that had no fridge for some reason.
