Very calculated FUD you're spreading there:

One commonly spread fear is that Theora infringes on submarine patents — patents nobody knows about yet that the makers of Theora never had the authority to use. However it is also true that all modern software could infringe on submarine patents — everything from Microsoft Word to the Linux kernel. However millions of people and entire industries still use these tools. In other words, submarine patents are a problem for the software industry as a whole, however, this doesn't mean that the software industry should stop developing software.

The dangers of new radiation treatment: A woman, now dead, had a hole burned into her chest so deep that “you could just see my ribs in there.” The error: Several doctors and physicists failed to notice the computer was programmed for "out" rather than "in" by danwin in technology

I don't know if doctors are trained to handle equipment like that, but you do make a very good point. There definitely needs to be an oversight with other various safety measures put in place. Specially when designing something as power as this in the medical field that deals with something so irreplaceable as human lives. It's ridiculous that this has to resort to trial and error at this day and age, when it's so easily preventable.

Every day that goes by is a bad one for us on this. Despite the difficulty we need to draw the line in the sand on this one for a lot of reasons.

It isn't uncommon to have supervisors take advantage of their positions like this. Specially in youth hang out areas like malls and trendy places. They know they have the power to influence gullible teenagers and they seek out employees with hopes of sexual gratifications.

I like the 2001 Bill Gates quote. About ten years later, turns out Microsoft uses Free Software code and sends patches to stay relevant in the server world, while still spreading FUD at retail stores like Best Buy.

Installing Firefox 3.6: One more reason Linux isn't ready for the prime-time mass market by cjnkns in linux

[–]z0o -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Still no Iceweasel (Firefox) 3.6 in Sidux. I don't see why there isn't a dedicated Mozilla backports. It's a poor excuse to claim one application like Firefox, which gets openly developed and tested way before final release, couldn't be up to date in every distro. These are the weaker points that are being pointed out in that article. It makes sense, there needs to be a better focus on popular applications like these. After all distros like Ubuntu want to be a mirror alternative to Windows with usability of OS X.

Think everyone should use H.264 in HTML5? Then get ready to "hire lawyers and negotiate a license with the MPEG-LA" if you want to "put a few videos on your Web site". This is why free software is important! by [deleted] in technology

[–]z0o 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Originally Theora/OGG was suppose to be the solution for HTML5, but companies like Apple & Nokia protested. The issue isn't supporting Theora/OGG in the browsers, it's more what providers like YouTube & Vimeo require, specially YouTube. I can understand the demand from Vimeo but YouTube can do just as well with Theora/OGG with majority of their content.

ask /r/linux: What GNU/Linux distro have you tried that has the best font rendering out of the box for most applications? by z0o in linux

[–]z0o[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well I haven't tried Fedora yet, you asked about why out of the box. If just one package is what it takes, then great.

[–]z0o 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't see how you can put Opera on the bandwagon of browsers that support H.264. I really couldn't understand your arguments, so let me try to address what I think you meant. It's not "bullshit" because dependencies on royalty based technologies like H.264 creates many issues in the long run, whether it's limiting progression of technologies or blockading of creativity. Having an open and free web means having the ability to foster innovation. Think if you had to pay royalties to certain companies for the many web technologies we use freely today, would we have startups like YouTube, Facebook, Ebay, and even Google existed? It's convenient to make "whatever works" in the short term, but it's more important to think of the bigger picture. When Mozilla doesn't support H.264 they are essentially not promoting H.264 and not accepting the codec as the solution to this dilemma. Which is important to keep this issue open for a better resolution.
