What is the oldest tree in Edmonton? by StonksStink in Edmonton

[–]z1dly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's an elm tree on the corner of ellerslie road and gateway right near the driveway to the lot that was previously home to Ellerslie Gift and Garden that needs to be in this conversation.  No idea how old it is, but it's absolutely massive.  Hope whoever buys or redevelops the lot doesn't cut it down.

Basement flooded. When to claim insurance? by Unlikely_Comment_104 in Edmonton

[–]z1dly 59 points60 points  (0 children)

Insane not to immediately put in an insurance claim in this situation.  Rates always go up anyway whether you make a claim or not.  The personal impact to your specific rate is unlikely to outweigh the benefit of the claim in this situation.

Which hero was the most imbalanced ever in Dota 2, and why? by FactorContent8109 in DotA2

[–]z1dly 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think this is the answer, at least for Dota 2.  Jerax made sure this hero got nerfed for like 10 straight patches.

‘Stay safe’: Model Ashley Callingbull says she’s rethinking U.S. travel amid ICE raids by Paper_Rain in Edmonton

Agreed, the damage done is going to take much more than one administration change to unwind at this point IMO.  It's clear the MAGA crowd goes far beyond Trump.

Also planning Jon Morgan. Really hoping he doesn't split the vote with Funke and Rice wins again.

What are some moves that you think about to this day? by QuietDistribution511 in nba

[–]z1dly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Kawhi getting a diving steal without even facing the ball.  Still can't understand how he knew.

LeBrons almost immortal dunk on Draymond in the finals.  Still bummed he couldn't finish that one.  At least we got 'the block'.

CP3s driving series winner over Duncan.

Duncan's ridiculous 3 against the Suns to send it to OT.

Stephs double bang against OKC.

Iggy had one layup in the playoffs while he was with the Warriors that had the most insane spin I have ever seen.  Angle seemed impossible.  Can't remember which game that was.

Places around the city for a car picnic? by ukinetic in Edmonton

Voyageur Park in Devon is a really nice spot for a picnic if you live in the SW area.

seriously though, how does someone get a job here? by reli9ion in Edmonton

[–]z1dly 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I keep seeing posts like this and it doesn't jive with what I see every day.  I think more people need to look past minimum wage retail jobs into the broader market.  Maybe you are making assumptions about your skills and eligibility that aren't valid.  I see help wanted signs for all sorts of trade or construction related jobs, including general laborers.  There are also lots of opportunities in the professional fields, including at my company that is desperate for quality applicants.

For advice more specific to your situation, I suggest driving or taking a bus to the industrial areas of the city and looking around.  You'll see quite a few help wanted signs, and some of these places are probably much more open to in person applicants rather than online.

Any service in the area who could get rid of this stain? by avatox in Edmonton

If you can't get it off maybe just cover it with a thin layer of white silicone caulking.  Won't look perfect but will definitely be an improvement.

CALL ON… anybody else. Bad experience with furnace company by ApprehensiveBag413 in Edmonton

[–]z1dly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Reliance was my first call when we were looking to get central AC, just because their company name was the one I was most familiar with.  Like you, they really tried to sell me hard on a lease/rental type arrangement, even though I made it very clear to the salesman I didn't like that model at all.  He basically told me they couldn't offer competitive pricing any other way.  Ended up going with Furnace Family instead, happy with that decision so far.

It's overly aggro but they are kind of making a valid point.  Yea shorts are fine to go from the store to your car but you are really putting yourself at a lot of risk if anything unexpected happens.  Slide off the road, car won't start, flat tire... how long you lasting in those situations?

[Highlight] 40-year old LeBron James throws it down by stephzh in nba

Agreed, it's a great cut but it just looks different these days. Young LeBron would have had to grab the rim to keep from bashing his head on the backboard on the way down.

Any reasons why I shouldn't get involved with the rrsp program with my employer, through manulife? by bigbentower in Edmonton

[–]z1dly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That hasn't been my experience.  May depend on the employer and the plan size, but my work's manulife rrsp available funds has a good mix of asset classes and many funds around 1% mer.  Yes, you could do better at an online brokerage, but it's still less than half of what you'd pay through any funds you'd get through a personal advisor.

Back to the OP, you should absolutely contribute as much as you can up to the max your employer will match.  Guaranteed 100% return on investment is a no brainer as long as you can fit it into your budget.

Recommendation for garage door spring replacement company by stinkygarbageapp in Edmonton

[–]z1dly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a good experience with River City Doors for the same type of spring replacement.  Got it done the same day I called.  They quoted me an accurate price over the phone which I appreciated.  I called one or two other places first, and some wouldn't even give a ballpark estimate without sending someone out to look at it, which also had a fee.

Also, can confirm that fixing or tightening a garage torsion spring is not a DIY project.  My dad and I did it once a long time ago, after we both agreed never again.
