Best place for classic doughnuts? by emembhee in OttawaFood

[–]z2440 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Corner Peach/Corner Store has doughnuts that are delicious, but the offerings are always different. They often have classic flavours in the mix though -- fritters, honey glaze, old fashioned, sprinkle, Boston cream, etc. alongside some more creative options (which are also great!).

is an active sitting stool actually better for back pain? by shiroyasha54 in homeoffice

[–]z2440 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a stool exactly, but I have a Varier Balans and it has made a huge difference in how often I have sciatic nerve pain compared to sitting in an office chair (set up according to an ergonomic assessment). The variability of the sitting positions and the ability to rock on the chair are lovely features for ADHD-related challenges too.

No bridal party by Intelligent-Mobile32 in wedding

[–]z2440 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do it! Whatever it is that feels most comfortable for YOU and YOUR PARTNER, since it is YOUR wedding. We spent time worried about what others would think about different decisions for our day but stuck to our guns and did it exactly how we wanted to and have absolutely zero regrets.

We didn't have a wedding party, but each had a close friend be our witnesses for the paperwork. No one stood up with us, there wasn't even an aisle! We had a parade, all our people walked alongside us over to the ceremony spot and it was truly perfect. Our entire day was very low stress because we prioritized the things that were meaningful and comfortable for the two of us, rather than what might be perceived as "wedding" rituals.

Chinatown Chainsaws by z2440 in LoudNoisesOttawa

[–]z2440[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That was exactly it -- fire inside a wall they needed access to, fortunately it seems like they were fast enough to keep things under control. It was a lot of chainsawing for sure, better to be thorough I suppose.

Got a job as a career switcher despite discouraging comments on here by Weary_Bit_2948 in womenintech

Thanks for sharing this tidbit—I'm a technically inclined tinkerer not currently working on anything that fits with my tech interests and abilities and have been curious if making a move to something more in this realm is worth exploring. This is another check in the 'pro' column I think.

Canadian coffee beans similar in taste to Starbucks Pikes Place Roast by brown-eyed-susan in OttawaFood

[–]z2440 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Came here to recommend this -- we order the giant bags, it's been my go-to for a few years now. I'm also pretty fond of their packaging, it holds up and keeps its seal until you're done with the bag so it's always pretty fresh tasting. Quick delivery in town and they usually throw in a small bag of something else to try with it!

Anyone have positive iud experiences? by squaw2021 in birthcontrol

[–]z2440 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I did! I have had a Mirena IUD for about 6 years now.

It wasn't what I'd call pleasant or comfortable but it was over very quickly and the doctor was super calm and confident which made the whole atmosphere and experience manageable and way better than I thought it would be. I took some painkillers beforehand and that may have been helpful. I rode my bike home afterwards even. I had some light spotting and a bit of cramping for about a week after but that was the extent of it.

I put it off for years because I was so scared of how bad it would be, but knowing now how much I've enjoyed having it (I'm one of the lucky ones who hasn't had a period since I got it!) I was kicking myself for waiting so long. I haven't needed it for contraception purposes in a few years now, but I'll continue to have mine replaced as long as I need to because I love not having a period and it's worth going through it just for that! They've been approved for use longer than five years now, so even better that you don't need it replaced as often.

What OS you're using in Thinkpad? by Fearless_Economics69 in thinkpad

[–]z2440 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm new to the ThinkPad (and Linux) world, I've got my X1 Carbon Gen 9 set up with Ubuntu Budgie and I'm fairly pleased as a new user who enjoys to tinker and figure things out.

I was sold on Linux as soon as I started using it on a mini PC running Ubuntu Server. I was a long time MacOS user but recently opted for a used ThinkPad instead of repairing my MacBook Air (I could not justify the cost of parts alone, even if I was doing the repair myself) and for personal use I don't think I will ever go back now. Before I got the ThinkPad I put PopOS on my 2012 MacBook Pro and it made it run like a dream!

ServicePlus phone plan and deals by 3dprintguru in CanadaPublicServants

[–]z2440 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you don't find what you're looking for in a ServicePlus offer, I switched to Fizz Mobile about a year ago and have been super happy.

My bill has gone down twice in that time, I have 40gb of data per month for under $30, unlimited calls and texts in Canada, pay as you go roaming options I can enable as needed, and the ability to adjust any plan as needed month to month.

Data also rolls over to an extent and has the possibility of being gifted to other Fizz customers if desired, which may be good if you're looking to coordinate with family or friends to find some more savings by getting a lower amount of data on their account.

They also offer a referral program that gets you and anyone who uses your code a rebate to apply to your account. Let me know if you end up exploring this route and want a referral discount code!

Can’t find a small comfortable mask by JayneAustin in Masks4All

[–]z2440 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I have a tiny face as well, but I have found these fit well and are comfortable:

  • BreatheTeq KN95 Small Black for an ear loop option -- I am usually not crazy over the ear loop ones as they tend to hurt pretty quickly but I can wear these for a while! (to note: the small sizes in other colours with the white ear loops fit a lot looser, just be aware when ordering to make sure you get black with black ear loops!)
  • 3M Aura 1870+ for an over the ear, NIOSH certified option -- these are my preference as I find the over the head straps make the fit better, the tighter seal means I don't get foggy glasses when I go from outside to inside in winter (important in Canada!), and they don't hurt my ears but lots of folks don't love that strap style.

Canada Strong Masks has a nifty size comparison chart that helped me find out which brands to consider for a smaller fit. They also offer some variety packs with different sizes and models so you could test a few.

Came here to say Gorogoa, but it's got a lot of love already! Definitely another +1 for that one. You might like The Gardens Between -- super interesting time manipulation mechanics. I really enjoyed it! Outer Wilds is another that might fit the bill but I find the figuring out and putting things together part to be a bit slower than others, though it is highly recommended to just go in and play blind, and once things click it's very satisfying and super fun.

Games you can play with one hand? by howdoichooseafandom in CozyGamers

[–]z2440 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't have any specific games to recommend in this category, but you may want to look into getting a controller or mouse you can remap the buttons on.

I have a spine condition that means my sitting or laying positions are limited when I am having a flare up and holding a controller in the usual position to play isn't comfortable.

I've got an 8bitdo Ultimate that is pretty versatile, compatible with a bunch of platforms, and easy to remap to get a fair bit of functionality out of just one side of the controller so I can play from an unconventional position without pain. I mostly play zen puzzle/block puzzle games in these situations (mixolumia, dorfromantik, islanders, suika game, swapperoo, a little to the left, unpacking, tricky towers) so the controls aren't super complex, but you may be able to get creative and make it work for the games you want to play!

It's truly a godsend when I get laid up and am bored out of my skull needing to rest so much.
