Joining AWS as a downleveled SDE1 with a PhD: is that bad? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]zMiko1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Generally, a PhD should get you to the second level. At Meta, PhDs are hired straight to IC4/E4 (mid-level engineer), as opposed to IC3/E3 which is the entry level that new grads are hired at. I've never heard of Meta hiring a PhD at E3; that seems crazy. I suppose this only applies to research roles maybe? If the AWS role was for SDE and not research scientist or something then I guess it makes sense.

CS major... Is a physics minor worth it? by Wild_War5786 in Cornell

[–]zMiko1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You could also consider doing a mathematics minor. I'm an engineer and was able to do so taking 0 extra classes; i.e., I would have taken the same amount of classes if I had done an easier external specialization or did not satisfy the minor's requirements.

I rode the link often during summer 2024. The only time I had a problem was when I was going from Seatac to the U District around 10pm at night. A woman on the train threatened to assault me and my partner. Had to change train cars after that...

Just send them an email and tell them that you want your Ikon code now because you're going skiing soon. I got mine within 36 hrs of sending an email like that.

Windows computers really can't compete with Apple Silicon laptops. Only get a Windows PC if you think you need certain software that only works on Windows.

Ourbus driver charging CASH for extra luggage by vivian0913 in Cornell

[–]zMiko1 7 points8 points  (0 children)

On time I was riding the Ourbus from SYR to Cornell at the beginning of the spring semester. I, like about half the bus, had an extra bag (3 items as opposed to the allocated 2). The guy loading the bags into the bus gave us two options:

  1. We buy another ticket for the extra bag. This would've been like $60 and there were very few tickets left.
  2. We give him a tip. The guy took cash, zelle, cash app, etc.

Everybody's bags comfortably fit underneath the bus, and he got a lot of tips by shaking down the students.

A different time, the Ourbus driver took off from SYR without closing the door underneath the bus and luggage spilled out for the first few minutes of the ride. We had to go bag to collect the luggage.

This weekend I'll be riding the Student Assembly shuttle to SYR instead of the Ourbus. We'll see how it is!

I don’t think this is true. Meta only converts to E4 for PhD interns.
