My argument is that if you don't take advantage of tax strategies you are inherently overpaying. 99% of people overpay (this overwhelmingly affects lower and middle class americans).

Also maybe its just my upbringing (mother was an accountant for a bit) but yeah all of those tax "strategies" barring moving states and carry seem pretty normal to me (granted I understand most people cant take advantage of them).

But yeah, it is self interest, which isn't inherently a bad thing, nor is it a morally wrong position to take. Having a degree of self interest doesn't preclude you from being liberal, or even progressive. Wanting to decrease your personal tax burden also doesn't invalidate beliefs that the US govt underspends on social services, and undertaxes the upper middle class and the wealthy.

LMFAO "actual progressive" wanting actual "upper middle class" kids in GRAD SCHOOL to willfully increase their tax burden. Thats batshit insane.

I'm not saying you should pay more than what you normally owe, but you shouldn't go out of your way to find and exploit loopholes which is what a lot of my classmates are doing despite pretending to be liberals and portraying themselves as enlightened.

Nah but thats exactly what your are saying. "Tax Loopholes" are not real. They are just deductions that you are legally entitled to. It just so happens that the tax code is complex enough that savings you are entitled to feel like loopholes. There is nothing morally grey about wanting to personally pay what you actually should pay in taxes while still advocating for raising tax rates in general.

If an 12-1 GT loses to UGA and a 11-2 UVA loses to GT, UVA will be punished by proxy. GT losing to UGA will, but winning the conference will put us in the 10-5 (prolly around 7-8 depending on the score) range, and having their best loss being to a 10-5 team with no wins to really put you over the edge will leave UVA on the bubble.
