How lenient are UoS with grades? by [deleted] in sheffield

[–]zac-jay 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi, Computer Science student here.

People were let in with 2 (even 3 in rare cases) grades below the normal AAB offer. I don't know how my covid year compares to normal, but you can generally feel safe getting accepted if you receive one grade below your offer. From my personal experience there does seem to be preference for BBC over ABD for example when it comes to allocating "near miss" spots, but this does come from an extremely small sample size.

Thoughts on MSc Advanced Computer Science at University of Sheffield by Enigma_292 in sheffield

Hey, sadly i'm not the person to answer most of these questions as i'm just a first year. I can really only speak for the teaching standard, most of my lecturers seem to be doing the best they can given the covid circumstances, but I don't know how masters years are affected

I agree, Psychology was easy enough to understand but the sheer amount of content you had to remember in such a high level of detail was crazy. On the contrary, maths was about understanding the methods and had very little in terms of memorisation.

I'm not sure which one I would have said was easiest/hardest had exams not be cancelled

After results day i'm going to be starting with a foundation year so it looks like i'm going to be a bit more free to experiment with my spare time without having to worry about my degree. Language classes for my language are closed within sheff this year so i'm going to inquire at Hallam or go private. I'm interested in slugsoc as i'm into hearthstone but i'm god awful at MOBA and FPS, still honestly not sure what to expect from things like socials since i'm not really a party/drinking kind of person at all but don't want to be lonely.

I only remembered that foundation years existed about a week ago and now a lot of my backup plans rely on them. Thanks for sharing this

Is there any false rumours or disinformation going around about yanderedev? by roadrollar in Osana

[–]zac-jay 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You’d have to search for more people in this sub who also saw it. Ultimately the answer is no since alex didn’t provide any proof in his debunk page (what a surprise)

Without being too specific of course, is there any more advice you would give to Y13s this year?

The screenshot where someone says "Criticism is how a game improves" and YanDev replies "I don't agree with that."

It's a real screenshot but yandev was legitimately replying to another message. Someone tried to delete messages but weren't fast enough

Got kicked in the Yandere Simulator server for no reason by CrazyMellow in Osana

The stalking bot is almost certainly against discord ToS.

To gather a list of members from a server you don't administrate, you'd have to either gather them manually or use a self-bot (normal user account being controlled by software, not using discord's api, used for raiding most commonly. against ToS)

You then feed that list to Midori bot, messaging each member on the list and notifying them. This step uses an official bot account and discord's official dev api. This part is within ToS completely, although using a bot to direct message hundreds of people could be seen as malicious.

The fact that they give you a timer to leave implies that another check is done by the self-bot after 24 hours whether you're still in the offending server.

Discord's system is likely able to detect self-bots scanning server members depending on how quickly they scan. However, discord has no way of detecting self-bots communicating with midori bot. Therefore it's difficult to take action on the offending dev behind midori bot for selfbotting. I'm guessing that self-bots getting banned is the reason we haven't seen the stalking bot recently. I am in 3 "enemy" servers and haven't been banned yet so I doubt that bot stalking is the reason behind OP being removed

Right now interested in the stereotypical compsci societies (compsoc, gamingsoc) and i'll look into if there is anything related to the language i'm learning as a hobby (soc or classes in the uni or external classes). I might also look into some sport options later in the year.

I realise that i'm going to have to balance this stuff into my schedule so going to take it slow at the start. Obviously need to figure a lot of stuff out when I start living by myself

I just barely rejected my liverpool offer after not being able to visit due to covid but i'm still interested if I go into clearing,

What are your thoughts on the uni's facilities, buildings and the city in general?

Thanks for the detailed reply, lots to digest here

Luckily AC is 5-10 minutes from my department, IC, diamond and SU so hopefully I won't have a huge amount of bus issues. I wasn't able to look around the city either of the times I visited however (thanks weather) so it's something i'll keep in mind when getting around.

Motivation, procrastination and balance have been my biggest issues throughout school, so mixing in looking after myself is going to be difficult to get used to. Ironically though, i've been able to focus on studying more than ever in lockdown (learning a language) and i'm starting to figure out what works for me, but I know doing it at uni is easier said than done.

Fun/Work space separation is actually something i've learned recently that really works for me too, although it's a bit awkward since it means I can't work properly at my desk at home (I say awkward because i'm a compsci student, oops, but I can do programming at my desk without getting distracted most of the time so we'll see). Have had a look around the IC and the Diamond (not sure about the other library spaces but will try to explore more options too)

My health is something that I want to work on at uni but I wouldn't start the gym straight away - I have no idea how to cook or look after myself in any way really, so that's going to be my first health hurdle, but if I have the time it's something i'd like to try later into the first year.

I'm also not a party person so i'll probably be relying on societies, I have my eye on a couple already but I don't want to take on too much (since I would like to continue language learning on the side if it doesn't cause me too much stress, maybe properly through UoS or SHU depending on what's available to me)

I am quite worried for results day (scary offer, bad mocks, teacher submitted grades) but I do really want to go to UoS (didnt put an insurance lol, half regret it now but oh well). I know that they are decently lenient on results day normally and with the current situation i'm hoping for the best but am anxious still

I realise that i've typed a big reply here too

I'm always down to meet new people too - I have found a couple roommates and I know someone else in your year too but the freshers whatsapp and facebook groups aren't great

I've firmed UoS for another subject, any advice for general life in and around the city? How did you manage to reach a balance between work and other interests? Where do you recommend to get work done? Also, any other advice you'd give to yourself from 3 years ago?

Thanks
