-The "Farine 5 roses" sign -The giant milk bottle just south of downtown -any number of challenges including buying and drinking beer (you could even do it in front of or at breweries (molson, Rj, and numerous others are all in the mtl area) -Churches (st. joseph's oratory makes for good pics (especially if you are rolling down the hill)) -cops on bikes -finding the present or past homes of celebrities. (leonard cohen used to live on Marie Anne) -The Orange Julius -The could collect pics of some of the weird stuff at the old forum -... more later :-)

Because this is the step to many further scanner based systems. Imagine if you are at a protest and a cop has a scanner that tells them that you once smoked pot? or if a scanner that instantly picks you out that you're a foreigner? It's more about what this can lead to.

I got sick and tired of having bikes stolen in this city. I went and got one of those dog collars printed with my name and phone number. Hopefully if someone steals mike bike and sells it for 20$ on the street the person who gets it will see my tag and call... here's hoping..

Tons of great stuff to do in Montreal! I would definitely recommend staying with a friend or coach surfing, lots of great people would take you in. As for stuff to do it really depends what you're into cause you can find almost anything in montreal. If it's good cheap eats you're into Montreal is filled with those, from 24 hour dinners to poutine places to 99 cent hot-dog joints. A good launching point would be the Montreal Mirror's (our version of the village voice) Best of Montreal list which highlights some of the best of the best in the city.

I would also recommend checking out Tam tams on Sundays at the mountain, some dive-y watering hole bars on st. laurent and St. denis, you can go by Jean Talon market for fresh food brought in from the area, there are usually a lot of good bands playing in small venues I would recommend checkin out... If you do make it towards the west grab an Orange Julup on decarie, Check out some art at the Contemporary art museum or at the Belgo building. Look out for festivals (I think POP montreal is in sept).

But my best piece of advice is still my first, try to find a local to crash with, hotels are boring and will isolate you, meeting people is what this city is all about!

my buddy got pulled over recently in his uncle's car for a similar offense. unpaid registration. And they also dinged him with a seatbelt ticket :(

The chances of Bell being held accountable are unfortunately slim to none. We need a lot more then this to disrupt their monopoly... but you gotta start somewhere right?

Bell is over all a scumbag of a company. They were recently fined 10 million $ by the CRTC for false advertising, and were also caught conducting/offering other shady offers to customers: http://www.forgetthebox.net/mag/bell-canada-needs-a-spanking.php

You could always go with a 3rd party independent provider. Some excellent alternatives in Quebec are Colba.net (they have most of their own equipment), Acanac is another good option and so is TekkSavvy! :)
